I miss Phil Kessel and feel a mistake was made in trading him.
granted the Killer B's are back in some fashion:
"Last thought - Phil Kessel has 8 goals in 12 games this season. More than any Bruin. In half the time."
- from the always manic-depressant sounding pension plan puppets toronto maple leafs blog.
But good Lord if 8 goals in 12 games isn't enough to make you feel the slightest bit of nostalgia for a kid we saw go through so much....but thats just me, i feel like the hawks in the Mighty Ducks watching adam banks succeed across the pond.
Really hope some new young gun goal scorer that can score, hit and crap gold nuggets is on his way up through the baby B's as i type this.

Kessel was never going to re-sign in Boston (at least not at a price that the B’s could afford without tearing up the current roster). It is time to move on. It is easy to say “what if”. Has Kessel really made the Maple Leafs a better team? Last time I checked, the Bruins were in first in the Northeast and the Leafs were in last.

Agreed.
And look, even if the Leafs keep this up, we’re still getting a top ten draft pick out of the deal at minimum…not to mention next year’s first rounder. Let’s see who those players are and how they develop before we pass any verdicts on the deal.
Yes, he has made the Leafs a better team. Do they still suck? Absolutely, but they weren’t expecting him to turn the team’s fortunes around by himself. IMO Kessel has played better and harder in Toronto than he ever did in Boston, his defensive game has improved a bit and he seems more willing to play physical.
In the long run I think this deal will work out well for both teams. The Bruins will obviously benefit from having all of those good draft picks while the Leafs will finally have the 1st line sniper that they have been looking for for ages and they get a young star to build around without having to worry about those draft picks becoming busts.
Go Leafs and Bruins!

We all miss Kessel, but he ain’t coming back, so we can’t keep thinking of our offense as one that needs Phil Kessel, but as one that needs its current players to step up and meet their own capabilities. Luckily, Krejci seems to be waking from his slumber, Wheeler has been explosive in the past few games, and Savard is shaking off the rust. Positive things are ahead, and positive things currently exist—we’re first in the division, despite all the “disappointment” and “underachievement”! And i really think we’ll be there come April.
PS I like the Banksy reference, although Kessel would never try toughing out a wrist injury like Adam does in D2.

kessel is a good player, lets not kid ourselves. however, like was said before, yeah kessel may have scored 8 goals in 12 games. lets throw him a fuckin parade. fact is, toronto still sucks, and we will wind up getting a top 5, top 10 pick at worst out of that deal, plus whatever else well get in the 250,000 picks we got from toronto.
lets not be depressed because we need a young talented kid to show some potential… hhmmm, lucic is younger than kessel, sabotka is the same age, and wheeler and krejci are only a year older. and oh yeah, patrice… hes only 2 years the elder of kessel. so to give up any two or three of the afforementioned guys just to resign a guy who only looks good on paper, kinda a bad idea. long story short, while kessel might look like a bright and shiny toy, one guy doesnt make a team, and to give up multiple players who could have another 15-20 years in a bruins uniform, goddamn thats just dumb

Similarly, Gaborik has been on fire for the Rangers. I see some similarities in both deals, only the Wild didn’t get 2 first-rounds picks out of the deal and the Rangers weren’t as bad to start with as the Leafs.

Yeah, saw that game last night....
Gaborik was burning up the barn last night. The Rangers need a few players to step up with him on both sides of the ice. Realistically, they need to sign a few players to play with him next offseason.
Its tough seeing a skilled player leave and have success elsewhere, but I try to look at it an organization-wide level. The Bruins organization, which is already fairly deep, will be adding a ton of high quality talent to its pool over the next couple years. The Leafs organization, which in my understanding doesn’t have a lot of promising prospects, will not have an opportunity to add very much (no 1st rounders, only 1 second rounder) in the next couple years. The real beauty is that we’re making our team much better in the long run, while keeping a division rival from being able to rebuild the right way (they can try through free agency…but in the cap era, that doesn’t really seem viable).
I don’t want to sound like a Leaf’s homer since I am more of a Bruins fans than a Leafs fan but the Leafs will be just fine. Their prospects aren’t bad at all. Kadri, Bozak, Stalberg, Paradis, Hayes, Stefanovich, Kulemin, Hanson and Ryan are all projected as potential top 6 forwards. Obviously they wont all reach their potential but the Leafs really only need a few of them to pan out.
They got Gustavsson, Bozak and Hanson for nothing so that more than makes up for the 2nd round pick they sent to Boston and Kessel is atleast equal to a top 5 draft pick so essentially the only asset the are really losing is the second 1st round pick. First round picks are obviously valuable, but not so much that it is going to prevent the Leafs from rebuilding correctly. I think giving up the extra picks is worth it to help gauruntee that they are getting a quality player and not a bust.
Go Leafs and Bruins!

I’m not sure what Phil Kessel you guys got, but it’s not the Phil Kessel we sent away.

They Bruins have just as many Prospects in the system as Toronto
The Bruins have Colbourne, Caron, Hamill, Arniel, Button, Cross, Marchand, Bitz, Sobotka, Boychuk already in the system. The difference is the B’s now have 3 extra picks from Toronto to add to their prospect depth. Bruins have just as many possible top six forwards and top pairing D-Men, and also took 3 chances (4 if you count the Tampa Bay 2nd Rounder) away from Division/Conference competition. Basically what I’m saying is while Toronto is giving away possible top end prospects the B’s are adding to their already deep prospect pool, therefore, depleting Toronto’s chances of getting the upperhand on Boston in the Division.

The B's are fine
The Leafs will torch weak competition, but Kessel was never gonna resigns as a Bruin without tearing the team apart to make room for him. We have Savard for a long, long, long time now, plus the draft picks we stockpiled up. The leafs are a one line team & they are still one of the worst teams in the league.
The B’s have 5 picks in the first two rounds in ‘10, we’ll have an early pick from the leafs, a late pick (ours), an early 2nd round (leafs), a mid picks (TB bolts), then ours, plus another first round pick in ‘11. Also remember that the Providence Bruins are stocked with talent, look how we did not bring up Rask last year, the B’s have the ’07 eighth overall pick Zach Hamill playing on the farm now, nearly made the big squad this year. Stop worrying about Kessel, I know he is a human highlight reel, but he also has the temperament of T.O.
We resigned Lucic, Savard, Thomas, now lets hope the B’s get Chara’s deal re-done, I would rather have them than Phil Kessel, who is more concerned about himself than the team.

Kessel
All you had to do was watch Kessel the other night and when he got hit he didnt do anything after that, he took a cheap shot at Recchi of all guys who hits clean and he got smacked a couple of other times, he is an offensive player, yes he is playing hard because he just signed for big money and has to justify his existence now. But other than that glad he is in Toronto.
Screw Kessel
He didn’t want to be here anymore, so what could the Bruins do? I admit, his offense is missed, but evidently Phil had a problem with management trying to get him to improve his two-way play. So I heard, anyway. Plus, he has a crappy attitude as Todd The Terrible mentioned above. The Bruins are a team with a lot of potential, and if Kessel didn’t like it here, the hell with him!! There are few things I despise more in the world of sports than someone like Kessel who values the almighty dollar over a very good future with a very good team, that wasn’t exactly offering him a pile of dog crap to stay, figuratively speaking. Good luck, Phil…just not against us. Don’t let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya!
i feel like julien had a large part in making kessel not want to stay in boston, however, looking at what julien has done in his time here, i feel like the team needs full commitment to his system, because thats what makes the team great. i have faith in claude

I don’t think Kessel has ever been the most coachable player. From what I have heard he didn’t want to do the things that were going to make him a better all-around player. As a coach, you need all your players to buy into your system. I don’t fault Julien at all in this situation. The Bruins will be a better team in the long run.

Kessel was rumored to be a cancer in Minnesota as a Gopher and on team usa as well. The rumors always seem to follow him around.
Here’s hoping he’s not a cancer on Team USA. We’re going to need everyone we can get.
