According to a source close to the team, the Bruins are close to making a trade with the Edmonton Oilers for left wing Erik Cole.

Bruins get:

2008 - Erik Cole 12 10 22 -3 47

Oilers get:

GAP+/-PIM
2008 - Matt Lashoff 0 1 1 1 10

The Oilers would also receive a draft pick from the Bruins.

Wow

With my favorite team (Pitt) clearly on their way out of the playoffs and Dallas being the obvious choice in the West … the Bruins might be my hockey orphan team if they get Erik Cole. Still remember him in those good ol pre-broken neck Carolina days (don’t get to see many Edmonton games) but clearly that ceiling is probably lower now.

That seems pretty cheap for Cole, am I wrong? My knowledge of the Bruins non-NHL prospects are non-existent.

Seriously, though – Kessel, Cole, Savard, Lucic, Kobasew, Chara, Krejci … Boston’s just pure entertainment.

Sobotka had a good camp, but hasn’t looked great when he has been up with the big club this year. I would like to see them hang on to him. If this trade happens, I think they are giving up on this guy too early.

Lashoff was a former first round pick for the Bruins (22nd overall, 2005), so the Bruins have invested a lot in him . He has split time this season between Providence and the Garden press box. I don’t think that he was progressed as quickly as some in the organization had hoped he would, but he has the potential to be a top 4 defenseman. He could be a decent bargaining chip for the B’s in the trade market.

What I like about this trade: It shows that the B’s are serious about making a deep run in the playoffs this year.

What I don’t like about this trade:It seems like a lot to pay for a rental player who is on the decline of his career.

Also, like that the current roster maintains in tact for the most part.

I wouldn’t say it’s cheap for Cole, given that he’s going to be a rental player.

It all depends on what pick (if any) they would have to give up.

Um, Cole?

He seems like he’s one season away from a reclamation project to me. As JTO said, he was something to watch…in those pre-broken neck days.

Why don’t you guys just buck up and come calling for Keith Tkachuk like we all know you want to anyway? Plus, he’s got better production (17-17-34) and better PR (Bahstahn kid and all) and you don’t have to pay him next year if you don’t want.

Plus, it’d help me out personally, since I’m looking for a reason to root for you guys in the playoffs and that’d help.

i’m more than happy to dump lashoff for a bag of pucks, but sobotka? i don’t like that idea….not for cole. might be different if he wasn’t going to be a playoff rental but as is…
