Beanpot Final Open Thread
#1 Boston University Terriers
#3 Northeastern Huskies
Jack Parker's BU Terriers will look for their 29th Beanpot title, while the Northeastern Huskies try for their first Beanpot crown in 21 years.
How they got here:
BU was able to edge Harvard 4-3 in an exciting back and forth first round game that came down to the final seconds. Sophomore Nick Bonino scored 2 goals for the Terriers.
Northeastern dismantled Boston College 6-1 despite being outshot 46-27. Junior goaltender Brad Thiessen was spectacular in goal for the Huskies, making 45 saves.

NESN hasnt shown a good replay of what happened
by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Feb 9, 2009 9:42 PM EST up reply actions
Just showed a nice replay of Yip trying to saw Thiessen’s head off. Still not certain how the refs justify tossing McNeely with nothing from the BU side. Eerily similar to Bradford’s crashing into Thiessen in the first round and going virtually unpunished for it…
by BobbyOrrsBastard on Feb 9, 2009 9:55 PM EST up reply actions
Not enough close. Bradford ran into him. BU players were pushed into him. They just showed the replay. Did you catch it?
by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Feb 9, 2009 9:58 PM EST up reply actions
Caught it… Yip was pushed some… Bonino was not from what I saw. Still not pleased with the stick play at the end of that scrum and why the puck was not blown dead.

Apparently the Beanpot refs feel that Thiessen is so good, he doesn’t need any help from them. This is the second game where he is brutally attacked by the opposition and yet in both instances it is a Huskie who gets tossed from the game. This one was especially impressive as a BU player (Yip?) has his stick under Thiessen’s neck and just keeps tugging away… looked as if he was trying to strangle the man! Of course, this is perfectly within the rules for Terriers while Huskies are barely allowed to play with any physicality…
by BobbyOrrsBastard on Feb 9, 2009 9:54 PM EST reply actions
His own players threw Yip and Bonino on top of him.
by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Feb 9, 2009 9:55 PM EST up reply actions
My question is how did the ref not blow the play dead?? Clearly could not see the puck!
And seeing the replay, there is no way Bonino was pushed. He just jumped right on top of Thiessen, why i have no idea. Maybe wanted to take a bush-league play out of Brock Bradford’s playbook!
by BobbyOrrsBastard on Feb 9, 2009 10:00 PM EST up reply actions
There is a stick in his back pushing him down…but I am surprised that wasn’t whistled dead
by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Feb 9, 2009 10:03 PM EST up reply actions
He has every right to try and get his stick when the goalie is holding on to it
by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Feb 9, 2009 9:56 PM EST up reply actions
The goalie was holding onto his stick with his neck?! Thats a new one to me!
I am sorry, but if a NU guy is gonna get tossed for that scrum then a BU guy HAS to as well.

You sure it was NU? I thought so at first but Brick made it sound like it was BU…
by BobbyOrrsBastard on Feb 9, 2009 10:07 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah i was confused. Seems like it would be BU to call the timeout there but i thought they said NU
by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Feb 9, 2009 10:09 PM EST up reply actions
USCHO is saying NU as well. I can understand why they would, though am a little surprised by it. I would think there will come a time later in the period where that extra wind would prove more valuable…

Looked like a weak one to these admittedly biased eyes… Saponari (or however it is spelled) skated into his stick and then turned. I suppose Hewkin should have moved his stick earlier but still looked like a weak fall to me…
