Boston Herald: Fenway to host 2010 Winter Classic

Rendering of what the NHL Winter Classic at Fenway Park might look like (Boston Herald Image by Sarah Kaempfe)
Gayle Lee and Laura Reposa of the Boston Herald are reporting that the Bruins will host the 2010 NHL Winter Classic at Fenway Park on New Year's Day. According to the report, the Bruins' opponent has not yet been named, although the idea of a Winter Classic featuring the Bruins and New York Rangers has been kicked around for months. The Montreal Canadiens have also been mentioned as a possibility.
The rumor mongering ladies of the Herald's Inside Track aren't always the most reliable source, so we will have to wait and see if this comes to fruition.
The Winter Classic is the biggest gimmick ever, but I am a sucker for it and I don't think I am alone. If this is true, I am really looking forward to seeing the B's play at Fenway.

B’s/Rangers would be such a letdown. It has to be a Habs game.

Fenway?
What? Wait? Isn’t this information supposed to come directly from the NHL?
Not that I have a problem with Boston getting the Winter Classic. I think it’s fabulous, but.. but… IS IT REAL??

I agree with Andie. If this game ends up being Bruins/Rangers, it will have 10% of the excitement of a potential Bruins/Canadiens game at Fenway. The NHL would just be SILLY to have it any way else. Other than that, I am PUMPED!!!

You have to remember that the game will likely be on NBC so they probably want 2 U.S. markets involved.

Habs have also already played in an outdoor game
NHL might want to spread the classic love around. But I agree, BOS/MTL is the only way this one really should go. Either way, I’m pumped the B’s got it.
Hopefully there’s not some crazy New England unseasonal heat-wave going on during New Year’s.

The argument against the Rangers would be that the NHL would want to stage a game at Yankee Stadium in the next few years.

While a Bs/Habs matchup might be better in terms of pure awesomeness, the Rangers make more business sense.
- The whole point of the game is to get media attention, which is the Rangers’ biggest asset.
- It’s possible that this will be a playoff rematch, so there will be a little extra drama if that comes to pass.
- There will likely be more demand for tickets, given the short road trip. The league needs to KNOW beyond all doubt that it will sell out.
- The Habs will probably suck next season.

NBC certainly likes TV market #1.
Montreal isn’t much further than NYC and Habs fans travel very well. Besides, this game will sell out no matter what.
I can only imagine how uncomfortable watching a game at Fenway in January will be. That place in uncomfortable in the middle of July, now add freezing temperatures to the equation.

Capitals or Flyers could also be an option.
