This is how you handle the media...
Apparently, Aaron Ward learned something in those journalism courses at the University of Michigan. I have been never seen a player handle a media scrum better than this. They should make every NHL rookie watch this thing as an instructional video. If you have a few minutes, sit back and enjoy the awesomeness of Aaron Ward fielding questions from a horde of reporters (most of which probably hadn't covered hockey all year).
H/T to Hub Hockey for the video find

You all are a bunch of sheep....
I really don’t understand the sheep comment. Is he saying that the media just blindly follow whatever is said?
And not without reason.

Ward’s a great guy …. he even sat in with the Canes’ TV broadcasters when injured back in the day. I expect him to shoot straight on it from his perspective. I don’t know that he put on any kind of media clinic. He just doesn’t speak in cliches like 99 percent of players.

During the layoff between playoff series, he sat in with the Red Sox broadcasters for half an inning. The man has a future in the media if he wants it.

i am surprised
not at his ability to articulate of course, but rather at how much he was allowed to talk about the incident by Julien. I figured we would just get the standard, “No comment, I’m not gonna talk about it.”
I don’t know what station you guys watched the game on — I figure Boston: NESN and Raleigh: TSN? Out here in the Midwest I saw it on Versus, and on more than one occasion the broadcasters talked about how they hadn’t seen Ward that clearly agitated and bothered by something throughout his career.
I don’t know how much you guys know about Scot Walker, but we down here know both guys pretty well. Scott will drop the gloves when he needs to and doesn’t back down from anyone, but, he’s also not a goon, he’s not the Canes “enforcer”.
We also know Ward, obviously, and know he’s a stand up guy, and like Walker, will stick up for his team mates when he needs to, but, is/was not the team enforcer either.
In the heat of battle, things get fuzzy, as to what was and was not said and/or done. None of us were on the ice so all we have is what the players said. I think both players told their stories as they truly felt it happened. But, I also know that neither one of them are as pure as the wind driven snow.
I think Ward goaded Walker, and I think Walker should have see that Ward wasn’t doing anything to defend himself.
Now, lets get to game 7
Gotta ask...
…what exactly did Ward do to goad Walker? Wasn’t enough time for words to be exchange and video shows they clearly weren’t… was no pushing and shoving of Walker to goad him. I just don’t see any ‘goading’ there unless Walker really is hyper-protective of Cullen (which would be pretty pathetic).

Well, cullen apparently is suffering from post-concussion syndrome.
Imagine if someone was mixing it up with Bergeron. Like getting in a fight with him and losing terrifically.

Yea… and that post concussion syndrome hasn’t stopped him from playing hard or whacking Ward in the back of the legs.
Don’t see Bruins players fighting everyone who hits or facewashes Bergeron. Hell, the man was facewashed so badly in Game 5 that his visor was over his ear!! But Bergeron is man enough to stand up for himself…

I’m just giving you what I think is the actual reason. Everything else is heat-of-the-moment blah blah blah.

I got ya. I heard it as an excuse too. I just think it is a weak one. Don’t see anyone babying Bergeron and he is the superior talent who has had the more severe injuries (going off games missed). Just doesn’t cut it for me.

Well, Ward did shove Walker back after Walker came flying in with a forearm to Ward’s head. Not that that would warrant a puch to the eye, but there are some inconsistencies with what Aaron is saying and what the video shows: “I was telling Cullen that I did not like that (slash to the back of his legs).” C’mon Aaron, you hit him in the head. Sure, it may have been in reaction to the slash, but the way you went after him during live play is uncharacteristic of you reacting to a slash. That’s what drew Scott in. He comes flying in with his hands at your head as your shoving Cullen to the ice. You shove him back. Again, none of this warrants a puch to the face.
“I didn’t even see Walker…his right hand was behind him.” No, you were looking right at Walker as he tossed his gloves, grabbed your sweater and punched you. You saw it and I think you even knew it was coming.
Bad move by Walker, but not a “sucker punch” as it is being called. I’ve seen plenty of Three Stooges episodes, so I know a sucker punch when I see one. This does not qualify. It would have been a sucker punch if Walker would have pointed into the stands and said something like:“Look, there’s Cindy Crawford!”, then waited for Ward to turn around before punching him.
Walker deserved the instigator and the game misconduct. As for the suspension? Well, the league decided not to because the automatic suspension and fine to the coach is intended to prevent coaches from putting goons out on the ice during the last five minutes of a game that has already been decided. Walker’s not a goon. In fact, I’m not even sure he got into one fight this season. And the entire incident was in reaction to Ward going after Cullen in the manner that he did.
If I were a reporter, I might ask Aaron Ward if he thinks it was “convenient” that he chose to go after Cullen the way he did with less than five minutes left in the game.
Cindy Crawford? Is NC really that far behind the times? Are you living in a time warp down there in Raleigh? Are you all still living in 1993? I know some of you are still living in 1863, but…..
The instigator rule is in place for more reasons than just to prevent a coach from putting goons on the ice.

You just love to pick on us, don’t you? C’mon, you’ve got to give Cindy some love. She’s 43 years old and still looks better than most models half her age. Not to mention that she gives a lot of money from her calendar sales to leukemia research organizations, which is pretty cool.
If getting with the times means paying riduculously high taxes so I can drive on potholes, I’ll gladly stay put.
this guy is
the definition of Champ.
Excellent delivery towards each question. Classy type…great winner mentality.
When he retires there better be a team that grabs this guy for at least a Assistant Coaching job.
Walker Puts an Ugly Face on the Hurricanes
When I hear the words “New York.” The first thing that comes to mind is the Rangers. I am quite certain, that is because we are still in hockey season. Before the signing of Avery, I had no impression/opinion of the Rangers one way or the other. I recall the incident with Avery that tossed him out of Dallas and I remember and posting, I feel sorry for any team hard up enough to sign him. We all know that Avery was signed by the Rangers. We know how he played and now the Coach too is circling down the drain and just needs to be flushed. Do I have compassion for the other members of the Rangers? The people on the payroll who sell the tickets? The Marketing folks and anybody affiliated with the Rangers? Sure I do. Avery has a long track record of being a piece of chit. The good thing, is the men who represent the NHL and do a fine job of it, know all about Avery. So they will protect themselves and each other. It wasn’t even 3 weeks ago, that I posted about being happy we were playing Carolina next. I went as far as posting they would play clean hockey. They would not be like Montreal. I didn’t sit and pace the floors worrying about the cheap shots or sucker punches to my team. Carolina HAD my respect but they don’t any longer. Staal was supposed to be this big scary guy, and a force to be reckoned with. You are kidding me right? The Kids is cagey, and very bright. But he isn’t THAT great. He doesn’t stand out (for me.) His brother is a Ranger. Do I like Staal? No opinion one way or the other. Then there was Cam Ward. A 25 year old Rock Star. Guy is good. Guy will be better and can possibly be an “elite” goalie. If you asked me today about Cam Ward, I would look at you and say who? Pardon me? I don’t remember Cam Ward now. I don’t remember the Hurricanes and where they finished or what they did for this season. They have destroyed it all. They have joined the likes of the Rangers and I think it is shameful that Walker wasn’t dealt with. Do you care what I think? Probably not. But my point is this. One bad apple does spoil the entire bunch. I wouldn’t eat from that tree if it was the only food/fruit I would ever get again. There are only 30 teams in the NHL. How many are going to fall from Grace because of one schmuck? Wake up NHL. You don’t have the following Baseball and Football have. Why is that? I don’t know. I could promote hockey for the rest of my life and you wouldn’t have to pay me a dime. Deal with these A holes and clean this up. Remember, for every one of me, there are hundreds. Most people just walk. I will walk but I will tell you why I left. How many more feel what I do? I don’t think you want to roll the dice on this one.

Slow down
Actually, for every one of you, there is just one of you. Scott Walker punching Aaron Ward with his gloves on makes Cam Ward and Eric Staal something other than Aaron Ward and Eric Staal? Look, I understand where you’re coming from. If I was still 8 years old, I might even agree with you. Nobody likes it when there team gets treated unfairly. But you’ve got to understand that one bad apple does not spoil the bunch. For the record, I hate Sean Avery, but I stil like Lundqvist, Naslund and Marc Staal.
