Cam Ward & 'Canes shutdown B's in Game 2
They say that good goalies can "steal games" during the playoffs. If that is the case there should be a warrant out for Cam Ward's arrest. The Bruins out-shot Carolina 36-25, but Cam Ward held down the fort for the Carolina Hurricanes to earn his second shutout of the '09 playoffs in his team's 3-0 victory over the Bruins.
After a scoreless opening period, Carolina found the back of the net 2:30 into the second period when Joe Corvo's shot from the point beat Tim Thomas with traffic in front.
The Hurricanes increased their lead to two with a shorthanded goal by Matt Cullen at 7:32 of the second period. Chad LaRose picked off a pass in the defensive zone and broke in all alone. LaRose missed the net but stayed with the play and feed a pass out front to Matt Cullen at the left circle.
The Bruins dodged a bullet late in the second period. Chad LaRose picked up a rebound in the slot and clanged a shot off the crossbar that bounced directly down along the goalline. The play was ruled no goal by the on-ice officials but was reviewed by video. The replay looked as though the puck may have crossed the line but there was not conclusive evidence to overturn the call on the ice and the play was ruled no goal after a lengthy review.
Eric Staal iced the game for the Hurricanes with an empty net goal with 28 seconds left in the game to account for the 3-0 final.
The Bruins will travel to Raleigh, NC for Game 3 on Wednesday night at the RBC Center.
Notes:
- Other than the man advantage created by Tim Gleason's delay of game call, the Bruins looked awful on the power play tonight.
- The Bruins were not able to convert on of some of their better scoring chances including Patrice Bergeron's missed shot on an open net in the first period.
- The Bruins defensemen looked very sloppy with the puck at times tonight.
- I thought that the Chad LaRose's shot at the end of the second period went in. I think the key factor was that it was called no goal on the ice, so conclusive evidence is needed to overturn the call.
- I wish that Game 3 was tomorrow night so the Bruins could put this game behind them as soon as possible.
- That is all I got for you. I don't want to think about this game anymore.

I thought the Larose shot at the end of the period went in as well. I know there may be some Boston fans who disagree… but if VS was able to show it so well as a goal, WHY can the NHL not figure it out?
I think VS did a good job of reshowing the goal numerous times… and obviously the call on the ice says it has to be “conclusive”… who doesnt thing this was conclusive? clearly white between the puck and the goal line.
Oh well…. on to Raleigh.

the war room doesn’t necessarily get the same camera angles that you see.

Why not? How could they not have the above the goal view that everyone in Canada and the US saw?! That is just absurd.

They may have gotten just the TSN feed or the in-arena camera angles. This is how my friend who is a minor league ref explained it to me in an interview I did with him for my site back in January:
“The NHL war room from my understanding may not receive both feeds from both cities’ networks due to their specific satellite companies that issue them their feeds. So they may not have the same camera angles viewers in Boston may have if they are only receiving the angle from the St. Louis network. In addition some views to the war room may be in HD, some may not even though they are locally in HD again due to the satellite and network reason I just pointed out.”

I could see how that is possible if it was broadcast on FSCarolina and NESN, but this was broadcast on VS and TSN exclusively. I can only imagine that TSN had basically the same above goal pictures as VS(seeing how TSN seems to be a better hockey broadcaster). HD does not matter. I was watching on SD, and saw it clearly. Not just being biased. Boston’s own color man agreed.

Canes fan
If you’re going to have a war room and still make bad calls, it makes the entire league look like a bunch of idiots who don’t know what they’re doing. It’s not like they don’t have the money or the technology doesn’t exist. The NHL is fighting for legitimacy and ratings. This kind of stuff doesn’t help them. I want the right call no matter what team is involvled.
Glad to be here among other chowderheads. I’m just a chowderhead, not a Bruins fan. Lot of class shown from the Bruins fans. Must be one of the reasons Boston is the best sports town in the country.
i wonder that
about a lot of elements of sports, hockey included. At world class competitions like the Olympic games, we frequently see cutting edge technologies employed to time lightning fast sprint finishes, starts out of blocks, split times on insanely fast downhill ski runs, etc. It seems like the major domestic sports leagues lag behind in this regard (purposely).
Creating a system that can definitively judge the position of the puck relative to the goal line, or accurately spotting a football on the field, or whether a ball clears the fence is easily within the realm of possibility. I know there is a romanticized human element to the referee position, but there are plenty of “judgment rules” that will continue to exist that human officials will be needed for. These systems could just be tools they could better employ in the same manner that they use whistles, red cards, the NFL replay hood, etc.
Anyway, just my opinion.
Aw, shit.
This ain’t good.

Ward has been the best goalie in the league the last 30 games or so … he’s just on fire right now.

Overall....
just a poor showing by Boston. I was at both Games, and I had been pretty confident of a split after 2, but if someone had told me that Boston was just going to miss opportunity after opportunity, and get out-skated in one game, and then have the most dominant showing of the playoffs to date, I’d have figured they’d have played poor in Game 1. That Neutral Zone defense just killed them. They’ll make the adjustments, but Ward is back in the zone, they need to just stop wiffing on passes right in front of the net. Wednesday night could tell us a whole lot. Overall, still saying positive, I’ll stick to the 6 game prediction.
dont you want to change the outcome of the winner though?!
=)
i kid, I kid…
