Bob Ryan thinks that the RBC Center is overrated
Boston Globe sports columnist Bob Ryan was on 850 AM The Buzz in Raleigh, NC. Ryan for some reason was assigned to cover the B's-Canes series. During the interview, Bob Ryan debunked the myth about the RBC Center being "the loudest building in the league", calling it "nothing special" and "totally overrated"
Comments
RBC Center
Bob Ryan should try to be above being a homer. My goodness, he’s supposed to be a professional at his trade and look at things objectively. The RBC center is probably the craziest bldg in the NHL during the playoffs. That’s what the players say, not a punk reporter in the press box….
by jockular on May 7, 2009 3:02 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
he's an idiot
Shortly after the interview, he said a player’s wife needed to be slapped, got suspended and then was found passed out drunk in the Harbor.

you're quoting a guy who obviously didn't even want to be there
seriously. a BOSTON sportswriter who did not want to be there covering your team, and WHINED about it. He’s worth quoting??

Ok.....
“The RBC center is probably the craziest bldg in the NHL during the playoffs. That’s what the players say, not a punk reporter in the press box….”
And the Bell Center says that, the Shark tank says that, “the Garden is vibrating!!”, etc.
It’s all the same local stuff. Of cours Canes players will say their place is the loudest.
Ryan should have just not talked about it though, as he now looks like a fool.

Mark Recchi and Aaron Ward
you might know those guys.
They say that.

Wow,
that convinces me.
And as I listen to Ward on local talk radio here now, what do you think he says about the Garden?

Recchi was quoted yesterday about it
Please learn to read.

almost everyone in the NHL media and players agree the RBC is one of the- if not THE MOST rockin arena in the NHL. If you follow hockey at all, you would know that. We also have the loudest recorded decibel level of any NHL arena. That pretty much explains it all.
by packpigskinfan25 on May 7, 2009 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
alright, one of.
Man, I don’t know why this is defensive all of a sudden. I know the place is loud, plenty of places are. Though, I must say that if the hockey stat I didn’t know was crowd noise, I can live with it.
But you got me, I didn’t know your decibal stat, I know nothing about the sport of hockey and how it’s played. :)

Your boy from SCoC is the one whining about us fans getting too much credit from the media. Your buddy Bob Ryan is the one who called us “overrated”…
Maybe thats why we are “defensive”. We didnt bring it up… Bostonians did.
I dont call it being defensive… I call it making ourselves heard. We like to do that! :)
Your right though… thats all I really know about hockey as well….

Chara needs to figure out how to catch Staal. If he can’t catch him, he can’t hit him.
by DidJussiThat? on May 7, 2009 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Whatever worked Game 1 Chara's gotten away from.
Hopefully he figures that out. But really, any pro in the NHL who couldn’t score on that turnover that Staal capitalized on isn’t worth his salt.
by 13_Legion on May 7, 2009 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
What worked in Game 1 was Staal being exhausted from Game 7
of the Jersey series.
I’m just waiting for Chara to pull out a giant flyswatter and go after La Rose. You can tell he’s getting frustrated trying to cut off that little waterbug

Bob Ryan
has forgotten more about professional sports than canes fans will ever know.
You’re in the south, stick to high school and college football, which is all a “school” is good for down there anyways.
If any of you want fancy book lernin’ you know where to find us.

hahaha.
You Bruins fans are so damn ignorant.
Ike- lets not forget College Basketball and NASCAR!!! Cant have a Southern sports joke without those!!!!
OHHH and last I heard Baseball- that sport that you all love so much in the NEast(RedSox and Yankees)… most of the players come from down south or another country. OHHHH Basketball(you know the Celtics and all…) they come from down south. Football(Patriots, Giants)- THOSE GUYS COME FROM DOWN SOUTH TOO!!! Now we have hockey… whada know… all those guys come from Canada, Europe, and RUSSIA!!! Not too many from the NEast US either.
You all are much more intelligent and all around better then us! ;)

UNC going to beat BC, BU, North Dakota, Minnesota anytime soon?
The NCAA Men’s hockey is a leap over bounds better March Tournament then Basketball, my opinion of course.

round ball sucks.
But as to Carolina hockey, here’s one:

all of the local schools around here have club hockey teams. NCSU, UNC, DUKE, ECU, WF, Clemson, USCarolina…
NCSU was really good for a few years
ECU was dominant for awhile.
I havent been able to keep up with them like I used to… too much HW and such.

since you asked
Duke, UNC and NC State are part of the Atlantic Coast Collegiate Hockey League which participates at the Division II level of the American Collegiate Hockey Association and have done so since 1995. The other member teams are Va Tech, Georgetown and UVa. So basically, what BU, Maine, N. Dakota and Minn are to college basketball, these teams are to college hockey.
by NoVa Caniac on May 8, 2009 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No, those are club teams. Not to be confused with D-II NCAA hockey (which only has 7 teams. 6 of which are in New England). Those are all D-I NCAA basketball teams that you have mentioned. Minnesota plays in one of the top NCAA basketball leagues in the country. That was a terrible analogy.
by Stanley Cup of Chowder on May 8, 2009 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
My analogy
wasn’t in regards to what division of the NCAA or ACHA the teams play in, but rather the reputation of the sports programs from the respective schools. In other words, BU, Maine and N. Dakota are about as well known for their basketball programs as UNC, Duke etc are known for having any sort of hockey programs. Minnesota has a decent basketball program so I’ll leave them out this time.
by NoVa Caniac on May 8, 2009 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I assure you basketball means more at BU than the club hockey at Virginia Tech.

One of my good friends love NASCAR.
He goes around the country to watch races. I don’t care for it myself, and normally lose interest after a little while.
There aren’t many Bruins fans in the State of New York though, your geography is a little off. That you can get a little more learnin’ in.

I was referencing the generalizations of Southern sports fans with a generalization of Northern sports fans. Nothing to do with NY/Boston geography.
BTW I have lived in Maine/NH/MA/NY and PA… I know a bit about the geography.

Actually, last nights games wasn’t that loud, so yea, this Ryan guy actually reported it accurately. Now, if he had been here for the last game with the Rangers, the noise was ear splitting.
I was in Iraq for the Cup run in 06 but my wife said it was crazy loud then too. But, no stadium has ever stood for the entire game like the Caniacs did for game 7 against Edmonton. The Oilers were amazed, the NBC broadcastors were amazed, and I was just wishing I could have been there to be a part of it.
