2009 NHL Awards Show Open Thread

I figured that the NHL Awards Show might be a good event to have an open thread for. There will probably be more missing teeth and ill-fitting tuxedos than a high school prom in Appalachia. Plus, there is the possibility of hearing Alex Ovechkin give an acceptance speech, which is always fun. Maybe a few Bruins will even bring home some hardware. Join me for the awards show and add your comments. The show airs on Versus at 7:30 ET.

I hoping for 3 things out of the NHL Awards
1. Ovechkin acceptance speech
2. Manny Fernandez showing up drunk to accept Jennings
3. Lots of shots of hot wives

by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Jun 18, 2009 7:23 PM EDT reply actions

do hockey players have hot wives?

It’s not like they make tremendous bank like other pro athletes.

Joe Haggerty sent me a Twitter message (I feel weird using the word Tweet) that Manny is in Vegas tonight.

Really? Chakakahn (spelling?) and Dr. Seaver’s kid? That’s the best you could do NHL?

He was at the pens game 6 when he filmed that.

Classy move by Manny to show up after the initial report that he wasn’t going.

I thought he was getting booed for a second until I realized it was “LOOOOOUUUU”

Which player do you think is most likely to be hitting on cocktail waitresses during “the stank shift”?

Hasn’t made that money just yet.

Kevin Smith, Wow, I thought the NHL cut its ties with him after the blog thing.

by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Jun 18, 2009 8:29 PM EDT reply actions

They had video of him at a devils game after that.

Z

I’m kind of surprised that Mike Green didn’t win, but Z is definitely deserving

by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Jun 18, 2009 8:44 PM EDT reply actions

I’m so happy Mike Green didn’t win. SO HAPPY

The tri-fecta.

I don’t think Z thanked his wife. He’s in trouble later tonight.

by 13_Legion on Jun 18, 2009 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Damn, I missed it.

Had to go into the other room.

What did he say?

by 13_Legion on Jun 18, 2009 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Pretty much just made fun of Datsyuk’s English and then thanked “the regular guys” like his stick guys

How is the northeast division going to look after that?

Why the Northeast?

If they move to Hamilton, they could easily be in the Western Conference.

by 13_Legion on Jun 18, 2009 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I disagree completely. Fire Gretzky, they can make it work when Moyes isn’t cooking the books of his other assets.

That market is setup to fail. They thought that the could draw fans by sticking The Great One behind the bench, but people don’t play to see guys in pennyloafers and a suit.

by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Jun 18, 2009 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly. Fire gretzky and you get back 6 million a year and get a good coach. Then get some talent in front of him.

A team bleeding millions that is controlled by the league is not good for the NHL as a whole.

by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Jun 18, 2009 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, I know.

I meant that Cornelius shouldn’t defend the ’Yotes

by 13_Legion on Jun 18, 2009 8:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Why not? There are fans there that care deeply about the team, same as here or anywhere else.

Yeah, and the team probably shouldn’t have left, though Winnipeg is a lot smaller market than Phoenix.

The MTS Centre holds 15,015 for hockey

Hmmm, still not as large, but you’d have no issue selling the place out I’d figure.

But Ontario just makes too much sense for another team.

by 13_Legion on Jun 18, 2009 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, the jets played in a stadium of about that size too. They had trouble with corporate support and season tickets, which are the lifeblood of NHL teams.

but the arena is 30 minutes away from the city AND in a non-traditional market

by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Jun 18, 2009 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions

The placement is a mistake but there are ways to help with that.

What’s the proposal?

by 13_Legion on Jun 18, 2009 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Gas cards with ticket packages and the like. The carolina arena isn’t exactly in downtown either, they seem to do okay with attendance once football season is over.

apples and oranges. completely different markets. one with no other pro sports and one with all 4 major sports.

by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Jun 18, 2009 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Hockey can do just fine in places with 3 other major teams, if it can win anything.
