2009 NHL Awards Show Open Thread
I figured that the NHL Awards Show might be a good event to have an open thread for. There will probably be more missing teeth and ill-fitting tuxedos than a high school prom in Appalachia. Plus, there is the possibility of hearing Alex Ovechkin give an acceptance speech, which is always fun. Maybe a few Bruins will even bring home some hardware. Join me for the awards show and add your comments. The show airs on Versus at 7:30 ET.

I hoping for 3 things out of the NHL Awards
1. Ovechkin acceptance speech
2. Manny Fernandez showing up drunk to accept Jennings
3. Lots of shots of hot wives

I disagree completely. Fire Gretzky, they can make it work when Moyes isn’t cooking the books of his other assets.

That market is setup to fail. They thought that the could draw fans by sticking The Great One behind the bench, but people don’t play to see guys in pennyloafers and a suit.
by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Jun 18, 2009 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions
Exactly. Fire gretzky and you get back 6 million a year and get a good coach. Then get some talent in front of him.

A team bleeding millions that is controlled by the league is not good for the NHL as a whole.
by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Jun 18, 2009 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions
Why not? There are fans there that care deeply about the team, same as here or anywhere else.

Yeah, and the team probably shouldn’t have left, though Winnipeg is a lot smaller market than Phoenix.

Hmmm, still not as large, but you’d have no issue selling the place out I’d figure.
But Ontario just makes too much sense for another team.
Well, the jets played in a stadium of about that size too. They had trouble with corporate support and season tickets, which are the lifeblood of NHL teams.

Gas cards with ticket packages and the like. The carolina arena isn’t exactly in downtown either, they seem to do okay with attendance once football season is over.

apples and oranges. completely different markets. one with no other pro sports and one with all 4 major sports.
by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Jun 18, 2009 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions
Hockey can do just fine in places with 3 other major teams, if it can win anything.
