Bruins make qualifying offer to Phil Kessel
Joe Haggerty of WEEI.com is reporting that the Bruins have made Phil Kessel a qualifying offer. Details of the offer were not disclosed, but Kessel's agent Wade Arnott has confirmed this report. By formally offering Kessel a qualifying offer, it ensures that he remains a restricted free agent after July 1st. Had the Bruins not offered Kessel a qualifying offer and he was not signed by July 1st, we would become an unrestricted free agent.

The qualifying offer is usually way lower than the actual asking price. I expect the negotiations to go on awhile longer. The qualifying offer only has to be 75% of a player’s previous year’s salary for anyone making over 800K. Kessel made 850K last year, so his qualifying offer could be as low as $637,000. The way I understand it is that it isn’t really an offer but more of a safe guard to make sure he does not become a UFA.

so this is really not a serious offer?? Just more of the Bruins making sure they can trade Kessel instead of loosing him for nothing? Maybe they can come to a break even point with Kessel see where he wants to be in the salary range and then see where the Bruins will meet him idk or is he a goner and gonna be wearing a diff teams sweater come next year?

It’s not definite he’s leaving, but if they can’t work out a deal that works with the cap the Bruins would be foolish to let Kessel just sit out until he leaves as an RFA. If he’s not traded by the end of the weekend, I’d see his fate decided by the time his injury heals up.

It pretty much gives them more time to negotiate a deal with Kessel and/or trade him. It also makes sure that they get something in return for Kessel if he doesn’t sign. Teams that sign RFAs to offer sheets must give up future draft picks to the other team, while UFAs can sign where ever they want and the player’s old team gets nothing. If the B’s didn’t give Kessel a qualifying offer by July 1st, he would have become a UFA.

Well, it will be more interesting now.
Certainly makes sense just so he doesn’t walk. At least the bargaining agreement seems friendly in this department to the holding team.
Hey, does anyone know why the Bruins haven’t had any organized draft party the last two years?
I went in 2007, that was a fun time. Was that really so that they could show off the “new” logo and uniforms that year?

I’m not sure. I figured they would this year. Maybe they don’t want an angry mob when someone gets traded. They seem to be making a conscious effort to do more of the fan events. I went to a training camp session at the Garden at the start of last season and they had a lot of stuff for the fans. Besides, the ticket sales reps hounding everyone, it was a nice event. I was armed with my pen and notebook, so the reps thankfully ignored me.

It’s possible that they don’t bother because the Bruins have the 25th overall pick.
That and the angry mob thing. I look forward to the Saturday morning riot headlines after the islanders pick Duschene tomorrow night while 20,000 people watch inside the Islanders’ arena.

Those tools that bought Tavares Islanders jerseys last year would be pissed.

So, by what round of the draft will there be a video on youtube of one of those getting burned?
Could be end of the first.
