Looks like they are going to let their RFAs get offer sheets first and their UFAs field offers on the open market. Only 8 minutes until free agency.

I heard that a European team is interested in Axelsson, but it’s just a rumor as I have no link.

Swedish Elite League would make a lot of sense for him at this point

I would much prefer that over a non-bruins NHL team.

Good guy and played a long time here but I just don’t see where he fits in.
by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Jul 1, 2009 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions
I hear that. I like that he’s played only on the Bruins and I’d like him to end his NHL career a Bruin. So, here or Europe are both fine with me.

Ward being shopped?
@HackswithHaggs: Hearing Aaron Ward is being dangled out there in trade talks. Take that for what it’s worth. #Bruins clearing space for another D-man maybe?

ooooh, good point. Then again, I’d trade a thousand brilliant interviews for the team to go farther.

It’ll be draft day all over again. Stuff doesn’t really get rolling for the first couple hours anyhow.
Except Wheeler last year, but that was done before the deadline.

Apparently it’s actually just frontloaded to keep the cap hit lower and eventually he’ll retire. They hope.
Join me on the Hockey Blog Adventure!
by Cornelius Hardenbergh on Jul 1, 2009 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions
I believe cap hit is total money made divided by life of contract, so I don’t think front loading helps at all with the cap.
by Sheriff Shane Hnidy on Jul 1, 2009 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions
but the buyout is less, if they front load the money
by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Jul 1, 2009 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions
Right, frontloading gets the cap hit down to 3.75, but he’ll be making more than that. 22.5 out of 24.5 of the contract are in the first 5 years, 2 in the last 2.
Join me on the Hockey Blog Adventure!
by Cornelius Hardenbergh on Jul 1, 2009 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions
The front loaded contracts have several benefits – it has nothing to do with cap hit (kind of) or the buyout. it is all about attracting/rewarding a player to your team with a ton of cash up front.
- prior to the CBA, GMs would lure marquis player with several years at rich money. now, with the CBA, the rich teams offer front loaded contracts to give rich, guaranteed money to players in the first several years. it is basically a way of the GM acknowledging how much they value a player and want his services.
- as usual, the cap hit stands as the contract terms divided by the # of years. as long as the player starts that season in which he signs prior to turning 35 and retires before the deal finishes there is no salary cap hit charged for the unplayed years. (that is where the lower avg cap hit helps)
- so GMs thought of using front loaded contracts in the new CBA era to attract top tier players to their team with guaranteed high dollar per year structured contracts.
- it is only recently with some of the new front loaded contracts on what have been deemed 2nd tier players, ie) johan franzen in DET, have they come under scrutiny.
hope that helps clear up the whole front loaded thing
Bruins interest in Rasheed Wallace
Oh wait, maybe I am confused.

12 yrs is the Detroit loophole deal….. as long as CHI wants to pay the cash to Hossa, the Hawks can spread that over the cap once he retires…..
I’m not a huge fan of that strategy. Look at the Bruins they will have roughly $2 million in buyouts next season.

Needs
Lets be real, we need a singular player with size speed and skill. We have multiple players who excell in certain parts but the only one who fits that mold slightly is wheeler. Im thinking Havlat, liked hossa, like one sedin (not both), and maybe a gaborik with a contract ridden with incentives

They can wait for the offer sheets to see the real market value for Kessel…which could be a luxury or it could backfire depending on what the offers are.
by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Jul 1, 2009 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions
I kind of want to see them sign Hunwick before they have to match offer sheets….unless Hunwick’s agent just wants us to believe that there are a lot of suitors out there.

at this point I’d be curious to at least hear what Hunwick and Bitz are asking for.
I would actually take Hunwick, Kessel & Bitz and move Ward if possible.
Ward is good, but he’s a bit old and I thought that really showed at times in the playoffs. He’d be good to have on the team, but I think he’s also a guy who gets more value back then he gives staying on the team
ouch….well maybe ouch.
Habs are being active. Though losing Higgins and Komesirk (most likely) for Sapcek and Gomez isn’t exactly a big improvement I don’t think.
You guys are doing a great job of posting all these updates here, making the work day just fly by.
someone mentioned Havlat – might not be terrible to play him against Kessel.
Thanks
Habs have tons of money to spend. I think the only have about 2 lines under contract.

Not really a fan of Kaberle for Kessel so I view this as good news. Also Burkes updating asking price for Kaberle was pure ridiculousness.
Ward to Carolina for a AHL D, grab Seidenberg.
Then get into the Havlat offers while you wait on Kessel, Hunwick and Bitz to get an offer from outside the org or file for arbitration in the cases of Hun/Bitz
Ward to Carolina would be interesting after the way he was bashed in the media down there during the playoffs.
by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Jul 1, 2009 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions
I think it is a horrible trade your going to trade a player that is just getting to his prime for a player that is a offensive minded defenseman that may or may not be worth the money he is being paid.
4.25 is a good contract for Kaberle

Ouch
Cammalleri going to the Habs could hurt in two ways:
1. Gives the habs another scoring option, though also somewhat of a head case i think
2. Locks Kessel in likely north of the $4.25m ideal goal I was hoping for.
To keep Kessel you need to move someone mostly now.
Great news on Bitz, 1 down!
