Breaking News: Ward to Carolina
Ward was just traded to Carolina for get this .... Patrick Eaves and a 4th Round Pick. TSN reports that Eaves has been put on waivers already for the purpose of being bought out.
I have been a huge supporter of Chiarelli so far, like most people. But this one I don't understand. I'm definitely in favour of moving someone to sign Kessel, but why the hell would we get Eaves just to buy out his contract! I also don't love the fact that it's Ward that is gone, just because we need DMen and Ward is solid, as much as I love Kobasew I'd feel better if we gave him up (he'd be the likely Forward to go). Would Carolina not accept Ward for just a 4th rounder?? I don't get it? I don't see how the Bruins are doing them a favor. It would be enough of a favor to give them a solid Veteran DMan for a 4th Round. Why the hell was a skunk like Eaves thrown in.
Here's Eaves info, his cap hit $1.4M . 6G 8A 14Pts last yr. Chalk up another $250Gs in buyout money. Though apparently somehow the Bs actually much money next year. Is this even possible? Can someone explain?? Maybe it's just wrong info.
PATRICK EAVES BUYOUT FROM CAPGEEK.COM
2009-2010: $258,333
2010-2011: $-41,667
2011-2012: $258,333
2012-2013: $258,333
The only way this makes sense is maybe if we're trading Kessel for Kaberle. Anyone else have any ideas as to what PC was thinking?

Yes, more dead cap space. This won’t bite us in the ass at all.

I dont think Ward for a 4th would have cleared through the NHL as a valid trade. Eaves was thrown in to clear cap space for both teams because Eaves buyout is not as much as other players would have been.

I supposed 250k/year isn’t that bad a hit, but still. Any cap space gone to stuff like this is 250k/year of non-producing cap space.

They only take the cap hit if no one picks him up on waivers.

I wonder though, if you announce you intend to buy the guy out, who’s claiming him at that salary when they can sign him for the league minimum a few days from now?

True, I didn’t think of that. Not a huge hit for the B’s though.

i am a big fan of this trade…..although i did like ward and he is a solid dman, i am a bigger fan of bringing up a Boychuk or yound dman like that from providence…..the bruins have 4.6 million in cap room after this trade and the buy out of eaves……this gives them room to try and get kessel back and if he still sticks to his 5 million dollar asking price then the bruins can use that money to get a higher quality dman, like a seidenberg or a derek morris
