Matt Hunwick files for arbitration
According to Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe, restricted free agent defenseman Matt Hunwick has filed for salary arbitration. His case will be heard by an arbitrator in Toronto sometime between July 20th and August 4th. By filing for arbitration, Matt Hunwick cannot be signed to an offer sheet by another team. According to Shinzawa, the sides are not far apart and he expects Matt Hunwick to re-sign with the Bruins before the scheduled hearing.

Blue Line for '09
Hunny going to arbitration is a good thing.
Boychuk re-signing could be a good thing.
Sherrif Shane heading out isn’t a big loss.
So right now the top 7 Defenders are
Z, Wideman, Ward, Stuart, Ference, Hunwick, Boychuk.
Given the quiet action on second level defenders this off season I think the B’s could add a solid 2nd line defender into this mix. With Ference and Wards age, plus Hunny and Boychuk’s youth – a little more veteran presence could be a good thing.

If we can get a good d-man we can squeeze under the cap for Kessel…hmmm.

With all due respect....
Andrew Ference is only 30. That’s not that old considering the rest of the guys on this team.

NO we wat Kessel to resign. Who the heck is going to score 30+ goals? It sure as hell isn’t bergy or Sturm.

I think if they can get Kessel for less then $4m, then another defender could be had if you make a move.
Not sure I’d want them to move anyone but Aaron Ward, though not sure what the market could be for him really.

If they were going to move a D-Man, I would rather see Ference go but that doesn’t offer much cap relief. I think Ward brings a physical presence and some veteran leadership on a team that is still relatively young.

There’s not that much urgency to improve the blue line. Z and Wideman are already one of the best 1-2 punches in the league, so I’d rather they focus on the Kessel situation for now. There’s always the trade deadline to pick up a PP specialist if they still need one by then.

I still think they need a guy that can start the breakout out of the D-Zone. Hunwick definitely showed signs that he can be that guy, so they might just need to re-sign him, which would be a much easier solution. I think they really missed him in the Carolina series.

I’m hoping for the same. If Hunwick keeps improving, he might be one of the best blueline value players in the league.
