Versus stinks anyways
Believe me, I dont have a single nice thing to say about the Canes, but how they get ZERO appearences on versus is beyond me. They do have solid fans down there, and I mean hell, if Tampa and Dallas get a showing, then the Canes are more than deserving of one as well. Oh and one other note, i hate when Brick calls the B’s games for versus. He doesnt carry any homer commentary with him like Jack would
Good to know
members here have more sense then the author.
Anyone who actually thinks the Canes do not deserve AT LEAST one VS/NBC game is a putz.
I wish you(SCOC, not you SMF) could know what its like to be a fan of a small market team…
“Gooberville”? Really?
Whining? Kinda like the whole Aaron Ward “sucker punch” whining?
Keep the shots at the Canes coming bro- you just sound like a jerk with a personal problem, and its quite funny.

Who cares if your team is on National TV? As long as you get to see the game, does it really matter? It isn’t like college football or basketball, where your team needs exposure to make a bowl game or the tournament.

Easy thing for you to say...
But here in NC we could actually use a larger rabid fan base… one that spreads outside the Triangle area. We are the least populated NHL city I believe..Maybe some of Southern VA, Eastern Tenn, WV, KY would be nice to try and market…. We could use more sales in merch from outsiders who think Staal/Ward are amazing players, and maybe they want a T-shirt or something… We could use ANY kind of help we can get, and if you dont understand that, then I think you need to take a few business courses.
The team itself has noted that they know how marketing outside of Raleigh is horrendous, and have commited to doing better, but the NHL/VS are really doing us no favors by not televising our games now are they?
It would also be nice to elevate some of the ignorance that spews from some bloggers and media types…. like the dumbass who picked the Canes to finish 13th in the East!
Lets also not forget the fans of the smaller market teams that do not live in the area… they get screwed every which way to Tuesday.
And what about our players? They do not get as much respect from the media/fan bases outside our market when it comes time for AllStar games, individual awards, etc.
I think Bubba’s main point was that if the NHL really wants to push hockey to “non-traditional” markets, then why do they allow their broadcaster to snub or ignore those teams? Especially the successful ones.
You do not have to agree with me, but your ignorant jabs at CanesCountry, Canes fans, and the organization are juvenile. I feel that Bubba and Cory have always showed you plenty of respect and deserve some back.

I didn’t even link to Bubba’s post. Who is being ignorant now?
The NHL has no control over what games get aired (nor should they). Versus can pick which games get aired as long as they are played on certain nights per their TV agreement. They obviously want to select games that will give them the best opportunity to return strong ratings. That is just business. Maybe you need to take a few classes. As for me, I’ve already gone to business school.
Canes fans love to complain about small market slights. It your thing. It’s what gives you your identify. You’re the team and fanbase that everyone loves to make fun of and you feed off of that. I get it.

I was off on the CanesCountry bit...
for that I do apologize.
Why should the NHL not have control over what games get aired? How does that make sense? If this was ESPN we were talking about, I can understand… but the NHL MADE OLN/VS into what it is. The NHL has a weak contract. The could require double headers so more teams(specifically West conference) teams get more coverage. There are other options as well. How are they going to improve their “strong opportunity to return strong ratings” if they stick to the same damn teams every time?! I have always been taught you have to broaden your reach to create new customers to generate more income. Of course you can reach too far in most cases, but on TV? I doubt it.
Canes fans have every right to complain about “small market slights” because its true, and if your voice is not heard- nothing will change. We dont mind the “slights” so much as the ignorance coming from people like you with your NASCAR jokes and “Gooberville” remarks. It literally reeks of regionalism prejudice and it is derogatory and uncalled for.
If you really think that Boston area sports fans are not “made fun of” you need to travel more. Talk about a bunch of homers…

I love when Brick does games becuase he isn’t a complete homer and provides a lot of insight.
Tampa and Dallas are both much bigger TV markets. Dallas-Fort Worth is the 5th larger TV DMA (2,489,970 TV Households) and Tampa-St. Petersbiurg-Sarasota is #13 (1,822,160 TV Households). Raleigh-Durham is #27 (1,080,680 TV Households).
by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Aug 23, 2009 6:47 PM EDT up reply actions
I dont care how big the markets for Tampa and Dallas are, they suck. Its better for the NHL market to draw in casual fans by showing better teams on TV, like Carolina.
It’s about what is better for the NHL. It’s about ratings and eyeballs.
by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Aug 24, 2009 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions
So what is better for the NHL?
A game being televised “nationwide” with little interest in the game to the “eyes” of the people in the cities from which the teams playing hail, and NO interest outside of those cities?
OR
A game being televised with marginal interest from the “eyes” of a small market, and large interest of a big market (Canes play the Caps six times…We also play Boston, Pitt, Phi FOUR times… Yotes and Kings play the Ducks six times, and Wings 4 times), and marginal interest of the rest of the cities that VS is available?
by packpigskinfan25 on Aug 24, 2009 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions
That depends on the markets involved. One rating point in New York is close to 75,000 TV households compared to about 10,000 in the Raleigh-Durham market. That means that the game would have to do a 7.5 rating in the Raleigh-Durham DMA to reach the same audience of a 1 rating locally in New York. Of course, a lot of cable advertising is sold locally, so you could make the argument that they would want to spread the wealth to a bunch of different markets. Where Versus is still trying to make a name for themselves and shedding the OLN image, they are probably just gunning for the most eyeballs possible at this point.

And how would VS know anything about regular season Canes games?
They have had ONE in the past 2 seasons… Not quite a large sample there.

The Canes aren’t exactly tearing up the local ratings either. http://blogs.newsobserver.com/sportsmedia/canes-tv-ratings-decline
by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Aug 24, 2009 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah with that info Ill certainly agree with that. Especially reasoning that Versus may not even want to chance it (considering they are trying to grow themselves) and just go for the bigger markets period. Good stuff with that link. So I guess thins means, the Florida Panthers probably dont have anygames either? Down 50% to an 0.1…….ouch
Fair argument...
but I think you also need to look and see that the article you linked was posted in January. A lot of the locals were upset with the team for re-signing Mo, while others were bored with the team because of Lavi… and a very poor start. We had also just gone through 5 straight loses, due to Mo’s system changes. Now if you looked at the ratings in Feb and March I am sure they are drastically different.

Sports Business Journal published local ratings at the end of the season but the Canes were’nt reported for some reason.

Isn’t Versus based in CT? OMG lingering relocation bitterness!
(Just got a Whalers shirt for my birthday…)
No, they are based out of Philly…but that would have been an interesting conspiracy theory.
by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Aug 23, 2009 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions
Ah, according to Wikipedia they moved there from Stamford last year. Serves me right for not doing my research.
Wikipedia is always true, but that sounds right. Maybe it is a big conspiracy.

I dont believe in this line of thinking but some of the more extreme Canes fans will say that ESPN has a bias due to PK moving the team from CT.
Awesome you got a Whalers shirt!! I have 2. One is so old its got holes all in it, but its one of those things you just cant ever throw away!

It’s funny (and kinda sad) – my mother won a Whalers jersey for my birthday gift on eBay, thinking it was a legit thing, but it turned out to be a cheap ripoff and goalie cut, so my father’s going to offer it to some goalies he knows. Mom ended up getting me a Reebok Whalers t-shirt as a replacement, and it looks great. I’m still holding out hope of either finding an old jersey on eBay or that IceJerseys or Mitchell and Ness will finally make a throwback now that the license has been released.
I was young when the Whale moved and remember not thinking too much of it at the time (especially since I’m a Bostonian and it wasn’t “my” team), but I got to go down to Hartford for the first time for a Monster Jam a few years back and all of the photos still hanging in the Civic Center got me interested in the team. It’s hard to believe now that any New England city other than Boston had a major league team, but that’s what made them cool. Well, that and the logo.
I was living in RI, NH, and Maine during the mid and late 80’s. I was very young myself, but aware enough to remember the team, and my cousins and uncles watching them. When I got a bit older and was living in PA I couldnt help but pull for the Flyers. Then I moved down to NC, and over time forgot about hockey… till PK moved the team here.
I have a lot of respect for the Whalers history and fans… I know what it feels like to have your team taken away(Charlotte Hornets).

The Whalers logo is great. I will give that. It is one of the best uses of negative space in a logo. That and the Caps “Weagle”.
