What would you do?
Hello boys and girls! It's been a while since I've chimed in, so I figured I would come in and drop a line. I am going on my first Stanly Cup of Chowder sponsored Bruins road trip vacation this week, as I will be flying out to L.A. tomorrow morning before I take in the Kings game on Saturday. I am very excited for this as it is the first time I will ever see the Bruins play on the road (I don't count any of the trips I made to the Mall in Hartford, because that was hardly even a drive).
Before I do set off on my flight I thought it would be fun to put on our thinking caps for a bit. If you were Peter Chiarelli, given the rash of injuries and inconsistencies in the Bruins play for a large chunk of the season both offensively and defensively, what would you do? Would you pull the trigger on a trade now, before the Olympics? Or would you choose to wait it out until the trade deadline is upon us in March. And if you were to make a deal give me some names of players who you would trade and any potential targets you would like to try and acquire.
For me if I had the power I would look at teams like Edmonton, Carolina, or St. Louis since they are falling out of their playoff races at the midpoint of the season. If I were PC I would go after a puck moving defenseman, like a Lubomir Vishnovsky of the Oilers(8 goals, 18 assists in 39 games, cap hit of 5.6 mil through 2012-2013). Or if cap issues prevent me from making a larger scale move I would target a guy like Joe Corvo of the Hurricanes (4 goals, 8 assists in 27 games, cap hit of 2.6 mil and is a FA after this season).
So what would you do puck heads?

LET'S GO B's!!!
Ray Whitney?
Clearly there is a need for a scoring winger, but how about Ray Whitney in Carolina. He is having an ok year for an underachieving Carolina team (14-18-32, -6 in 48 games) but he is a proven goal scorer and has been very productive his 4 years in Carolina (55pts, 83, 61, and 77 last year). Although he is an UFA at the end of the year, he would fill a need for a scoring winger that the Bruins desperately need. Now I am not sure what the Bruins would have to give up to get him, but I would think that the first round pick that is not Toronto’s might be a little too much and I am not sure exactly Carolina would want, but aside from Kovalachuk there doesn’t seem to be a big market for scoring wingers. It’s just an idea.
Penner would be siiiick
But he is pretty expensive at a pretty long term, and Edmonton’s only player that isn’t sucking horribly this year. If Edmonton would go one for one for Wides (maybe we’d have to throw a later round pick) that would be good, but Edmonton looks pretty stacked at over-paid offensive defensemen who aren’t producing sooo….. I dunno

Trade, trade, trade!
Last year they waited too late and didnt get Pronger. Montador anyone?! He was horrible and was gone before we could even boo him. I’ve been kicking this idea to Beersy and Gouche’ on their radio show all year – Kovy is a pipe dream and will cost a lot in both picks/players and money. Also there isn’t a guarantee that he stays and signs on after the season ends. If we get him great, but keep dreaming on that one people. What I proposed was that we trade for someone younger who won’t kill our cap for the forseeable future and doesn’t cost nearly as much yet has the potential to be the next Ilya. Teams usually hold on to guys like that you would think, but there’s someone who fits that description and due to extenuating circumstances is probably available for a package of lesser picks and/or players. As long as Hitchcock is behind the BlueJackets bench (which may not be for much longer, btw!) last year’s #6 overall pick will stay in Russia on loan and won’t ever get a chance to sniff that frosty air in Columbus this year. Yes, yes I’m talking about Nicky Filatov (Nikita, if you want to get proper on me). This kid, I believe, just turned 20 years old, has undeniable talent and is at odds with his organization. Perfect time to snatch him away, before he shows what he can do in the Olympics! What would it take? Why wait? I hope PC finds out soon!
That could work out great for the future….but Filatov is unproven and probably won’t solve the scoring this year. If we can get someone that could help out this year: Whitney, Tanguay, Ponikarovski, and get Filatov that great but Filatov isn’t the answer for this year. Filatov Turns 20 in May so he is still young and has great potential. Just hope he doesn’t turn out to be another Carl Soderberg
