Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Elliotte Friedman of Hockey Night in Canada is reporting via Twitter that Patrice Bergeron will not continue on the road trip with the team to Ottawa. He is returning to Boston, presumably to have his right hand/wrist looked at. Bergeron left Monday night's 3-2 loss to the New York Rangers during the second period after getting hit in the right hand with a shot by Dennis Wideman.

Yet another reason

to hop on the wideman hate bandwagon.

Wideman

He has been horrific this season…let’s see if we can get Boyes back for him…

I thought McQuaid looked solid playing up with the B’s. I wouldn’t mind if we moved Wideman for a decent goal scorer and slid Mcquaid in as the 6th Dman.

Chara-Morris
Ference-Boychuk
Hunwick-Mcquaid

Not horrible, I think Boychuk’s emergence makes this a lot more possible. Of course, this is all speculation, but damn Wideman has looked horrible.

and I had completely forgot that Stuart will be back soon too…

So you’re saying McQuaid would be better than Wideman?

You know who the most popular player in town is?

The D man in Providence who you see for two games and think the world of.

I don’t think the world of him. In 3 games, he has the same +/- as Wideman in 36 and Stuart in 32.

(that’s a -2)

His behindthenet.ca rating is the worst on the team as well, though that’s mostly small sample size.

He would not be as good as Wideman, but if we got an OK return for him, McQuaid looked like he could fill the gap short-term until Stuart returns.

I did not imply that McQuaid is an allworld or top 4 d-man. I think you took that comment a little far. Also note that i said if we got a decent goal scorer in return. Just saying that I think he could hold his own until Stuart returns. He seemed like a physical player who played a more simple game than Wideman (ie.less horrible turnovers).

So, if most Bruins fans are screaming for his head, who do you think Chiarelli can actually get for him? He’s got nearly a $4 million dollar cap hit until 2012, so the poorer teams are right out. Who’s looking for defense, has the cap space, and has someone we want? And will that someone fit into the cap?

People give wideman a lot of crap, but I’d rather have 6 widemans than 6 mcquaids playing D for the Bruins. The whole team has fallen off since last year. Wideman was really good last year. Whether it’s a Cheechoo thing or what I don’t know.

Well, I was trying to work on the phrase of the backup QB being the most popular guy in town.

McQuaid

I catch a few Providence games every couple months, and he has looked good at the AHL level.

I think you’d bring him up full time though only if we knew we were packing it in and we just wanted the younger guys and AHL players to get some full playing time with the parent club.

We’re not at that point yet, but our non-existent offense now has no Bergeron for a few weeks. Maybe they’ll be up sooner than we’d want sadly.

AHL skill doesn’t always translate to NHL skill, though.

That’s what I’m saying. He isn’t hte answer.

Like I said, only if all was lost would they be up here, and maybe not even then.
