Boychuk out 4 weeks with fractured forearm
The Boston Globe is reporting that defenseman Johnny Boychuk will miss four weeks after fracturing his left forearm in last night's 3-2 loss to the New York Rangers. Boychuk was injured after taking a slash from Brandon Dubinsky. Adam McQuaid will most likely slide into the lineup spot vacated by Boychuk.
Comments
Jack (of course) had the best comment on this, when Boychuk went out of the game: “well, Dubinsky got his two minutes worth, that’s for sure.”
I wonder how they will do the D pairings now.
You don’t want to pair McQuaid with Chara, at least I don’t. McQuaid is a placeholder, nothing more. I wouldn’t want him playing 25+ minutes. He should be a third pair guy, even if Big Z can probably make him look better than he is.
The easy solution would be pairing Chara with Stuart, Seidenberg with Hunwick and Ference with McQuaid. But Hunwick and Ference have done a good job together, and Hunwick has recovered nicely after his wretched opening game. Playing with Ference probably helped, since Hunwick and Seidenberg played together like two guys who met for the first time five minutes before the game in the opener. I would be very reluctant to break the two of them up, especially considering Hunwick’s rather fragile confidence level.
So, I don’t want McQuaid on the first pair, and if you pair Stuart and McQuaid together, the Bruins would never get the puck out of their own zone. I guess the logical move would be to put McQuaid on the second pair with Seidenberg, keeping the Hunwick/Ference team together and putting Chara with Stuart.
Free Brad Marchand!
Or Kampfer, yeah. Kampfer is leading the p-bruins in scoring and +/-.

Not a bad idea, but it’s only a 4 week injury. If McQuaid sucks, by the time he’s played himself out of CJ’s good graces, Boychuk would be back. If this were a season-ending injury, I think the Bruins might be more receptive to a Bartkowski/Kampfer call-up.
I would also hate to burn their options and/or start the clock ticking on their NHL service time before it’s necessary. Good organizational management dictates that you keep the kids in the minors until they’re ready, so you’re not wasting service years. (See also: Hall, Taylor.)
I think the two kids need a full season of playing time, wherever they might get it. McQuaid can be the 7th D this year, splitting his time between the ice and the 9th floor. Another year in Providence isn’t going to do anything for him.
Free Brad Marchand!
I agree on waiting on the call ups...though long term it might help to get either time in the NHL before Nov/Dec
Eventually a deal or two is going to be made to be cap compliant, showing off a couple young D could help their value in trades or help the B’s feel better about moving a Stuart, Hunwick or (please) Ference.
Per boston.com, they’re running this in practice today:
Zdeno Chara-Andrew Ference
Mark Stuart-Dennis Seidenberg
Matt Hunwick-Adam McQuaid
So there’s that.

Yeah, me too. If Hunwick is in NHL-Player mode and not useless-sack mode, we could be okay. Depends on McQuaid. Of course he’ll probably fight someone (named Colton Orr or something) early and we’ll be rocking 5 defenseman.

Sounds like they’re set on keeping Stuart and Seidenberg together, which I can’t complain too much about. Hunwick and McQuaid, in theory, should be a complementary pair because Hunwick is a puck mover and McQuaid is a stay-at-home type, but the lack of experience there concerns me. Still, there’s nothing wrong with putting your two weakest defensemen on the third pair.
Free Brad Marchand!
I think Hunwick will be okay, I don't mind they are giving him this type of pairing
The rotations definitely change here, heavier top 4 then usual but I think Hunwick can be a good defender and I like that he’s on a line where he has to take on more responsibility also.
damn

As stated earlier, with the coming cap issues on the return of Sturm and Savard, might be a chance to see if some of the youngins are ready for some NHL playing time if we end up having to move a D-man.
This is a sad bit of news. I’m heading to Thursday’s game, so lets see how the new matchups work.
I don’t think McQuaid was bad at all last season – He’ll be in the same role…filling in…and that sounds like a decent move – What about Bartkowski? He was the last to get sent down and heard that it wasn’t an easy decision – I like Cornelius Hardenbergh’s comment “If Hunwick is in NHL-Player mode and not useless-sack mode, we could be okay”…if we’re seeing a Wideman for ‘10-’11 it is looking like Hunwick…sketchy play in our own zone – What happened there? Confidence? He looked solid last year – Regardless…sad to see Boychuk on the shelf…for 4 weeks…OUCH!
LET'S GO B's!!!
Let’s not “look for” a Wideman for this year if we can help it. What I’m saying is I hope our good players stay good and our mediocre ones get better.

Reports earlier about Hunwick, Ryder and Wheeler on the trading block. I don’t think Hunwick will do much more then what we have already seen from him. I think he has peaked and they should try to move him along with someone else toi make room for Savard or Sturm when one of them return.
Love to trade Hunwick
but what use would it do? Removes minimal cap and then we lose depth at defense.

He’s safe for the moment because trading away D with Boychuk out is kind of silly. That being said, I don’t think Hunwick does anything special that can’t be replaced by any other $1 million contract out there.
Ryder and Wheeler on the other hand would clear enough room for Sturm and Savy but with the way Ryder has been playing, I’d rather keep him than Sturm. Sturm is the better hockey player but spends most of his time on LTIR.
Keep Marco.

Sturm would be a tough guy to trade. He is skating on 2 repaired knees and he has a NTC. I don’t see a lot of takers there, even if he did agree to waive his NTC.

no way Sturm is traded.
Has to be Ryder or Wheeler.

Removes minimal cap and then we lose depth at defense.
Aside from your use of the editorial “we”, that might be the most intelligent comment you have posted. We usually don’t agree on much, but I am with you here.

Wait, what’s wrong with the “we” there? I figured it was just you going off about how the team we pour our hard-earned dollars and time into isn’t “us” unless you’re physically on the ice, but now I’m confused.
If we’ve been watching, we’ve been seeing what he does.

The Bruins would lose depth. She would not lose depth. Neither would you, I, we, or us.

Yeah, but we lost to the Rangers.

I take zero responsibility for that lackluster effort. I didn’t even write about it. That’s how little I wanted to be involved with it.
by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Oct 27, 2010 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions
Exactly.
You didn’t write a preview. You didn’t make an open thread. You didn’t review the game. It’s your fault. And turn your hat backwards, Ryder scores every night more than 50% of Bruins fans wear their caps backwards.
I went away for the weekend, so I had to delegate some responsibilities. I actually did make an open thread, but I scheduled it for the wrong day like a moron.

That's true
I guess I just value players differently.
I was actually big on Hunwick when he came up, but of late he has been real bad.
