Bruins Thoughts
The Bruins have already started making moves to clear cap space for Marco Sturm and Marc Savard. Matt Hunwick traded to the Colorado Avalanche, Adam McQuaid should step in to be the sixth defenseman. Hunwick was the right guy to go, though I think Micheal Ryder or Blake Wheeler may need to go at somepoint also.
A lot of people will say this move hurts defensive depth. I do not see how. Hunwick was a liability. Sure, he carried the puck out of the zone, but what did that lead to? He made bad defensive zone plays, and turned it over in the offensive zone. I would rather have six solid defensemen.
Zdeno Chara has really turned it on this year. He is playing terrific in all three zones. Offensively, he is an absolute monster, and getting a lot of shots on goal. Johnny Boychuk had a solid game in Atlanta, the best game since his injury. Since that injury, he has not played that great, though he has played OK during offensive opportunities. Andrew Ference, believe it or not, has been good as well. He is making that contract not look too terrible. But I just jinxed it, and he will probably be hurt soon anyways.
When he has been in there, I have always been impressed with Adam McQuaid. He plays physical, can actually carry the puck out a little bit, and he makes the good defensive plays. I have thought he should have been in there over Hunwick anyways. Other than that three game slump, Mark Stuart has been good as well. He always brings that physical edge and for the most part has prevented more goals than he's helped get in.
One guy I have really been impressed with is Dennis Seidenberg. He's blocking shots and playing well defensively. Only thing I don't understand is why is he on the power play unit? It's not like he's an offensive defensman. I would have Chara-Boychuck, and than Stuart-McQuaid.
Offensively, things have been inconsistent. Sometimes they look like a juggernaut, sometimes they look like the Maple Leafs. The most consistent players have been David Krejci, Milan Lucic, and Brad Marchand. The offense has always been better with Krejci in there. He right now is their most talented offensive player. Lucic really looks like he did two years ago. It is obvious last year was a product of the ankle injury. And then Brad Marchand, who is not going to score 20 goals, but he plays his heart out every game, and creates a lot of offensive chances.
Nathan Horton, as much as I like him, has not played great the last seven games or so. He has been getting his shot off, and to his credit he has been robbed a few times, but it has not gone in the net. I have to wonder if the stories we heard from Florida were true, and Horton is taking some games off as the Bruins face adversity.
Mark Recchi has started to turn it on now, which is a good thing. Even when he wasn't scoring, I thought he was still skating well and playing physical when needed. Patrice Bergeron has been himself all season, just without the goals for now.
Tyler Seguin at times has looked like Sidney Crosby. Other times he has looked like a.... rookie. I am not too worried about it, seeing he is a rookie. The team obviously has confidence in him, having him on the power play. When Savard returns, I would love to see him with Seguin, or have Seguin with Bergeron-Recchi.
Tim Thomas has obviously been great all year. Tuukka Rask has not played bad either, but it is now obvious that Thomas is the #1. With Tuukka, I am not surprised. Last year I told you all do not expect a let down year from Tuukka(Which, by the way, was scoffed at). It is also obvious Thomas was hurt last season.
What are your thoughts on the Bruins so far?

Saw an interesting trade thought up by a Blues fan
STL gets Sturm and Wheeler (5.7 Mil)
BOS gets McClement and D’Agostini (2.2 Mil)
Boston Lineup becomes somehing along the lines of
Lucic Krejci Horton
Seguin Savard Ryder
Caron Bergeron Recchi
Marchand Campbell Thornton
D’Agostini
Chara Seidenberg
Stuart Ference
McClement Boychuk
MCQuaid
Thomas
Tuuka
B’s gain capspace and an NHL D-Man and only lose a player who hasn’t played all year, and very possibly could get hurt again (remember both knees are messed up now) and a player they probably would’ve had to trade anyway. This move gives Boston Capspace to actually better the team substantially at the deadline. I’m skeptical of this trade but the +lue’s fan says it’s been discussed a lot down there. I definitely think a pick would or something else would have to go the Blue’s way for taking on the capspace, but who knows. I really like this deal. I really would hate to see the B’s make deals to get just under the cap to fit Sturm and Savard just to see them get hurt again (I it sucks to think about, but it’s a very real possibility). This deal keeps a lot of the key pieces of the 2010-2011 B’s team together. B’s get two pretty decent NHL players to fill holes, gives the team about 3 Mil or so after you prorate the salaries or whatever ( I think atleast honestly I suck at math). That money can be used to get more promising players to further elevate the team as the season goes on. Honestly, if this trade happened the B’s would go from having a shitty cap situation…to smelling like roses

Hold the phone’s…pardon my drunkeness (Sons of Anarchy Finale…can’t watch that without beer and whiskey…you know unleash your inner biker lol) I mistook Jay MCClement for Jay McKee lol. Either way the capspace the B’s would save could still be put towards another Puck Moving D-Man for better Quality forward help in later trades or at the deadline. D’agostini is a promising young player and I believe McCmlement only has a year left on his contract. I still like the trade because it takes the B’s out of cap Purgatory (wouldn’t exactly say they’re in cap hell) and give them options to improve their team down the line.

I object
I think Chara has had some pretty poor performances this season. He needs to pick it up a notch.
Chara
I think Chara should be the one traded, would get us great return. He looks like a moose stuck in the mud trying to turn and catch anyone blowing by him.

Andrew Ference is also a +12.

… its not ference… its never ference haha
I’d really go on a limb to agree with seidenberg… ever since we got him last year he’s been one of the most consistent d-men out there (minus the whole injury thing)
Thanks for joining! Please use reply -——-^^^^^ to continue a conversation.
As for Ference, he’s been pretty solid this year despite people hating him for getting hurt in years past.

woops… i thought i hit that… oh well
I’m not bashing ference at all. i think he’s really stepped it up this year and i think he’s the best he’s been, which is great and it sucks he’s been injured almost constantly, i’m just saying seidenberg is just a better overall d-man this year.
Well, that’s true. Seidenberg is fantastic.

obligatory michael ryder post...
a side note- i realize that jordan caron is young, however he’s developed as one of our better penalty killers over the course of this season already… maybe this is just sour-grapes still lingering from a 5-year old one-sided trade of a sharks captain who will remain anonymous, however, if the bruins are trying to free up cap space and get a trade, i think ryder and his ridiculously overpaid contract could stand to take a hike.
while we would lose a considerable amount with his quote-unquote ‘ability to snipe,’ i think with blake wheeler coming out of some sort of shell, the addition of horton this year (even though he’s been slumping lately), caron’s potential and recchi playing as good as he ever has for us, there’s really no reason to keep ryder and his $4 million dollar contract
It isn’t as easy as saying “let’s trade Ryder”. I’m not sure how many teams will be willing to take on Ryder’s contract.
Secondly, I think you (like a lot of B’s fans) underestimate what Ryder gives this team.

i probably do underestimate him, however, for example, with a contract like his, there’s no reason (aside from injury) that you should go over 20 games in a row without a point like he did for a stretch last year between january and mid march. I’m not saying trade him now, i’m just saying that he’s not producing as much as other players with similarly lucrative contracts
classic UFA overpayment. If he had a deal in the 2-3 range, I don’t think he’d be the subject of much criticism. Ryder’s decent secondary scoring but shouldn’t be counted on to carry a load. Hopefully Cam has pried Chia’s finger off the “Offer 4mil contract” button on his desk.
If the B’s can get that storied PMD for Ryder, I suppose it should be considered, but I don’t think I’d be elated to see him moved as I don’t really see anyone on the roster ready to step into his role. Lest Sturm remain with the team.
