So with salary cap news, a look ahead to next year.

So according to Puck Daddy, the salary cap is expected to rise between 2 to 3 million dollars next season. So, with that in mind, lets delve into potential roster moves for next year.

Now, as I am always an optimist, lets assume that the cap is set at 62.5 million next season. Then here is what I would like to see...

Lucic - Krejci - Horton

Bergeron - Savard - Zherdev

Colborne - Seguin - Caron

Thornton - Campbell - Marchand

Chara - Seidenberg

Boychuk - Alexandrov

Sturt - Ference

Thomas

Rask

Here is how we got here...

If we were to roll that line up by paying Marchand 1.5 million, giving Stuart 2 million, and give Zherdev (or other quality scoring foreward) 5 million, we would have a total salary of 56.7 million, leaving us 6 million in cap room to lock down Krejci, Campbell, Thornton, Boychuk and Rask.

We would roll out that line up All while still having Jared Knight, Ryan Spooner, Ryan Button, Zach Hamill and Tommy Cross, amongst many others in the system.

I like this situaton for a lot of reasons. The big club is incredibly loaded with talent, most of which was brought up through the system, and will be signed to this organization for the next 4+ years. If this were to happen, there is no reason to think that this team couldn't win multiple cups. Also, it leaves us with the depth in the system to adjust the roster as necessary. Thoughts?

Interesting choice in Zherdev, I think $5M is a bit much for him though. I don’t know how I feel about that third line, that’s some young blood for sure. Talented, but young. If Ryder scores 30 goals this year, how do you feel about resigning him for around $2.5M/year?

If the D continues the play the way it has this season, is adding Alexandrov going to help?

That was actually the other way i was thinking. If Ryder or Wheeler scores a bunch of goals and plays good hockey consistently this year, scrap zherdev, replace him with one of those two at like 2.5-3, and you would still have the ability to sign a guy like kaberle, and probably have enough money to lock down the young guys you have coming towards FA.

Lucic – Krejci – Horton

Bergeron – Savard – Ryder/Wheeler

Colborne – Seguin – Caron

Thornton – Campbell – Marchand

Chara – Kaberle

Boychuk – Seidenberg

Sturt – Ference

Thomas

Rask

I personally don’t think the defence will stay this bad all year, but if they do they could roll out that line up and still be a great young cup contender.

As for the third line… Yeah it is a young line, but it has guys that have had very different professonal experiences thus far, all of which, in my opinion, will prime them to all be very good NHL caliber players come the beginning of next season.

swap seguin to wing in place of Bergeron and I’m on board. Seems a shame to not have our best face off man at pivot. I’m also not high on Kaberle, especially if he commands more than his current 4m in free agency. I’ve not been impressed w/ his game in Toronto, but suppose motivation could be a factor.

I definately see what you’re saying about Bergeron and Seguin swapping. I think a strong case could be made for either one of them centering that third line.

I also think that they would probably be able to lock Kaberle down for 2-3 years at about 4 million a year. If that is the case, I would think they sign him. And remember, we weren’t impressed with Nathan Horton’s game in Florida.

I agree. KPD tried really hard to float the idea of Bergeron on the wing last year (or maybe the year before) and I hated it. He is one of the best face-off men in the league and he is much more defensively responsible than Seguin. A center has way more responsibility than a winger.

Tru dat. I don’t think Bergeron is the greatest play maker in the game, but he wins a lot of face offs and is effective in all three zones, he belongs at center.

I hate to seem like I’m jumping on the bandwagon here, but Bergeron is the best two way center in the league and his value diminishes greatly if he’s playing wing. The difficulty that people seem to have when projecting next year’s lineup is that assuming that the first line, which seems to be clicking again, is left intact, you have two second line centers, an offensive specialist in Savard and defensive specialist in Bergeron, both jockeying for playing time. I don’t see this as an issue, with Bergeron and Savard you basically have lines 2A/2B and given that Savard will be on the first PP unit and Savard will be on the first PK unit, they both end up with sufficient playing time each night.

Sorry, but it’s not likely to happen. Odds are, the Bruins will need to promote from within, or make a trade, if they want to improve the team. The B’s will probably be facing cap penalties again, which will eat up a big chunk of cap room. I would not expect anything more than a mid-level free agent signing.

Free Brad Marchand!

You’re going to need that entire $3M for the next Seguin the Leafs give you, duh.

That is so funny and at the same time so true.
With the third pick in the 2011 NHL entry draft the Boston Bruins are proud to select………..

Krejci was already extended for a few seasons last year. I’d like to see the Bruins get a puck moving defensemen ahead of the enigmatic Zherdev. Not necessarily Kaberle, but he’s going to have a hefty price tag attached to him since I don’t believe the FA defensemen this year will be as deep as this past season. Although, personally I didn’t think it was that deep to begin with but teams overpaid for guys like Hamhuis, etc because they saw the impact a Pronger + Timmonen had in Philly to compensate for shit goaltending.

I went to check out which defensemen were UFA next season other than Kaberle and found some interesting players:

Kevin Bieksa
Christian Ehrhoff
Andrei Markov
Roman Hamrlik
Niklas Lidstrom
James Wisnewski
Ian White
Joni Pitkanen

While I’d love to see Markov defect from the Habs to the Bs as a double whammy, he’s likely to command a hefty sum and he’s been injury prone the past 3 seasons. Hamrlik on the other hand is way too overpriced at 5.5 mil and unless you can get him for around the 3 million mark, I’d pass.

Wisnewski is doing alright considering he’s playing with the Islanders and without Mark Streit they are awfully shallow at D.

Lidstrom ain’t going anywhere if he doesn’t opt to retire so let’s forget about him.

Ehrhoff would certainly be a very interesting acquisition and was only dealt from San Jose to Vancouver due to cap issues. The Canucks won’T be able to keep Bieksa, Sammi Salo and Ehrhoff with Hamhuis and Ballard acquired this past offseason and Alexander Edler likely to command a pay raise once he’s off his entry level contract. I omitted Salo from the discussion due to injury issues.

Pitkanen is a good offensive d-man although defensively he leaves much to be desired but could form a very good duo with a Chara or a Seidenberg. Ian White is good for the relatively inexpensive cost he will likely accrue unless teams start throwing around money like this past offseason.
