Timmy on the block??
So the Ottawa Sun is reporting that the Bruins are shopping Tim Thomas -
"Boston has held talks with teams who are looking for goaltender. The 35 year old Tim Thomas has a no-movement clause, and has a $5 million cap hit until 2011-12. Chicago could be interested, but would have to bury Huet in the minors or find a trade partner for him. The Stars, Blues and Blue Jackets could be interested, though the price would be steep. Garrioch thinks they’d be able to get a top 6 forward, top 4 defenseman, and a backup goalie."
Chicago would definately be a trade partner. They need to rearrange a lot of salary before next year, and could use a superstar goalie for the playoffs. Blues and Jackets have a lot of offensive youth, so they could be good trade partners too. My question is, do we really want to trade Timmy?
The answer is, yes. The Bruins aren't going anywhere this year. They might make the playoffs, so they can be a quick sweep for Washington or Pittsburgh. Timmy isn't getting any younger. I would hate to see him go, as I love his personality and place on this team. However, how much could we use 5 million in cap space. Even if we dumped him for prospects, or if we got a quality scorer in return, his 5 mil in cap space is desperately needed on the offensive front. I feel like the teams mentioned above have enough to offer that this would be the best time to move on from Timmy. It should officially be Tuukka time.

I’m not sure how many teams would take on his salary. I also think having a veteran goalie around is a great thing for Rask. I’m not sure I am comfortable giving the starting job to Rask with Kevin Regan or Dany Sabourin as his backup. I think that the terms of the Tim Thomas deal were awful, but I can see some of the logic behind why PC did it.

This is the same Bruce Garrioch that was pretty sure Malkin was getting traded to the Kings. Not to say Thomas isn’t being shopped at all, but take it with a lot of grains of salt. SCoC also has a good point in regards to what our goalie situation would look like.

Good point on the Malkin to the Kings thing. Chiarelli could be taking calls just to test the market, though. I think some people are reading too much into Rask getting starts lately. Rask has been the better goalie lately. That is why he is getting starts.

This reminds me of last year, watching the NESN commentators really have a hard time understanding that both Thomas and Fernandez were quite good and neither was The Starting Goalie for the majority of games. I remember early on in the season, Gord Kluzak kept talking every week about Thomas becoming the #1 starter. Repeatedly. Then Manny broke his back and the decision was made for them.
I did like that goalie tandem, though.

Doesn’t seeing “Ottawa Sun” next to any rumor just shoot up red flags?
I can see both sides of the argument to make a move like this – Chicago would be a great place for Thomas, they could use his help, and they have a surplus of good players to send over here. But, at the same time, Thomas still is your defending Vezina winner, and he’s played rather well despite the losing streak. I personally thought the B’s bringing in Sabourin to Providence was insurance on losing either goalie, but I also agree that Rask isn’t ready for a full load yet, and it’s money in the bank to have a known successful veteran to pair with him.
Ya I think a trade with Chicago would net the best return for Timmy, but do they really need him. I’ve heard Huet is on the outs with the team, but he has had a pretty good season. Anyway, I think if Chicago ends up wanting Timmy and Boston agrees to take Sopel in the deal, Chicago may send us Sharp. That’s a deal I would do for Timmy. Sharp would fit in nicely as the first line RW, and with Savard as his center he would be a lock to pot 30 a season. Sharps goal totals are down this season, but his helpers have sky rocketed (2 above his career high with 24 games left). I think coming to Boston and playing with Savard you will instantly see his goal totals go back up to 30+. A 30 goal 60-70 point guy with a 3.9 cap hit is exactly what Boston has been looking for. Boston can then bury Sopel in the minors and not have to worry about his 2.333 cap hit. Maybe a deal like Timmy and a second for Sharp, Sopel, Prospect (Skille Bickell). It would basically be Timmy and a second for Sharp, but In Boston taking sopel off their hands Boston gets a decent prospect in return. Resign Wheels, Stuart, Sobotka, Boychuk, McQuaid, Thornton, and Paille
Lucic (4.083) Savard (4.007) Sharp (3.9)
Wheeler (3?) Krejci (3.75) Ryder (4)
Paille (1.5?) Bergeron (4.75 Sturm (3.5)
Thornton (.550?) Sobotka (.600?) Bitz (.688)
Chara (7.5) Wides (3.875)
Hunwick (1.45) Stuart (2.5?)
Boychuk (.850?) McQuaid (.550?)
Rask (1.25)
That is 52.303 cap hit for the team. If you factor in Schaefer’s buyout it’s about 53 million, which leaves about 3+ mil in cap space. You can use that to get a decent backup goalie or a savvy veteran like Recchi to play left wing on the third line…someone who would put up better numbers then Paille. Maybe Tkachuk takes a hometown discount to finish his career in Boston. In that case if Thachuk would sign for 1.5 Mil there is no need to resign Paille, and Boston would still have 3+ mil for a decent backup goalie and cap space for injury call ups. Not having Timmy would be disappointing, but if it means having a lineup like that for the start of the 2010/2011 season I’m all for moving him
Like I said i don’t really think Chicago is looking for Thomas, but if they are I think the deal above helps both teams. Thomas playing behind that defense, and having an offense that can score more then 2 goals a game will settle him down. If Chicago bury’s Huet, and gets rid of Sharp and Sopel they gain about 6.858 Mil in cap space (Huet 5.626 – Thomas’ 5= .626+ Sopel’s 2.333 + Sharp’s 3.9 = 6.859). Boston gets about 1.1 Mil in cap space if they bury Sopel, and they get a solid first line RW with great goal scoring touch. If Boston could somehow get Skille or to a lesser extent Bickell back as well, Boston gets a pretty good prospect. I personally don’t see Bowman burying Huet, but a lot of people on other sites are talking about him doing so. If Huet passes through waivers and makes it to the minors I don’t see Rocky Wirtz being excited about handing out 5.685 for nothing this season and next.
As of right now this looks like a pipe dream, but it could work, and it’s about the only team and package i feel is worth Timmy. Blues, Blue Jackets, and Dallas don’t really have a goal scorer (Dallas wouldn’t trade Neal for Timmy), who could come in and help Boston now.

You have some good thoughts, but you’re kind of off on most of your things. I have been working possible signings and trades for a while and I came up with a finalized lineup for next season, that is if PC is actually smart.
- Trade Tim Thomas to Tampa Bay for 2011 2nd Round Pick
- Trade David Krejci to Florida for 2010 2nd Round Pick
- Waive Michael Ryder
- Sign Patrick Marleau 5 yr/$38M
- Sign Ray Whitney/Keith Tkachuk 2 yr/$4M
($7.6) Patrick Marleau – Marc Savard ($5.5) – Milan Lucic ($4)
($3M) Blake Wheeler – Patrice Bergeron ($5.75) – Ray Whitney/Keith Tkachuk ($2)
($1.3) Daniel Paille – Vladmir Sobotka ($0.875) – Brad Marchand ($0.688)
($0.7) Byron Bitz – Zach Hamill ($0.688) – Shawn Thornton ($0.55)
($7.5) Zdeno Chara – Mark Stuart ($2.8)
($4) Dennis Wideman – Derek Morris ($3.3)
($1.55) Matt Hunwick – Johnny Boychuk ($0.775)
Tuukka Rask ($1.3)
Danny Sabourin ($0.688)
Plus the Petr Schaeffer Buyout
Total Salary: $50.481M
So currently Tampa is in line for the playoffs and Nittymaki is tearing it up. Why do they need Thomas more than us? Does Mr. Boston Financial New Owner (forget his name) want to put enough money up to pay for the extra salary that would come with Thomas?
I’d say Krejci is worth more than a 2nd round pick, but I’m no GM.
Marleau is worth as big a cap hit as Chara?
Whitney’s going to take a 1/2 pay cut to play for Boston?

I concurr - surely you jest
MCole – I like your enthusiasm but those moves are hardly sensible.
Why would the B’s trade Krejci – anywhere, let alone for a 2nd round pick. A young and affordable center with growing skill set. No reason to move him – especially not to replace w/Marleau/Hamill.
I concurr - Surely you can't be serious
for starters – why would the B’s move Krejci, let alone for a 2nd round pick. A young, affordable center with growing skills would at least command more then a 2nd round pick – but I fail to see the benefit to the B’s in moving him or his salary.
I’m not exactly sure where I heard this, but as far as i can remember, I thought I had heard Sharp+Barker for Timmy. Don’t know how everyone feels about barker but I don’t hate him.

annd nevermind
Don’t listen to me. The Blackhawks have just shipped Cam Barker to Minnesota for Kim Johnsson and prospect Nick Leddy

I don’t see Timmy going anywhere. Ever. He will finish his career in Boston. His game will bounce back and he will always have the ability to make those impossible saves. I would like to see him in goal tonight. He hasn’t really been in a game for almost a month now and they have to play him at some point. Rask has been playing well enough but not stellar. He should have had a few of those goals against Montreal.
I’d say a 2.14 GAA and .926 Sv % is pretty stellar. Most of the goals in the Habs game, he was left out to dry. On every one of those goals the slot was wide open and the Habs had guys going hard to the net.
