What would be the cost of say a Dustin Penner this off season
I haven't seen Penner that much this year, but from I can tell he's a winger with very good size, above average scoring ability who takes advantage of good centermen and players around him.
I don't think he's a game changer necessarily, but after last nights game I think moving Ryder for whatever we can get on the wing is a good option this off season.
No way Ryder goes 1 for 1 with Penner, B's will need to add more to this deal, but how much. Edmonton isn't going anywhere and can use a lot of talent. I doubt Thomas would be preferred over Ryder but I do think either veteran plus could be included in a larger deal to land Penner this off season.
How much do you include though, and if not Penner where do you look for goals? Marleau and San Jose?

Penner would be a nice addition. He is a +4 on that abismal Edmonton team. I think for a guy like him is who really Edmonton’s only producer you are looking at Ryder and a possible 2nd round pick or another player thrown in the mix. Who knows though. I would love to have him.

Maybe we could trade Ryder for TJ Oshie straight up.

coincidence???
I’m curious about where you came up with the whole Penner scenario. An Oilers fan says that the talk in Edmonton is that the Oilers and Bruins will have a deal done in the offseason( players and picks uncertain ). They are wanting our draft pick. I like Penner, but is he worth a number 2 pick?

I was just looking over NHL teams...came up with Penner
I look at him as a young and still developing Wing, with size and scoring ability.
If the 2nd pick is being requested then I’d say Penner and someone like Ryder are involved, as well as another player or couple picks from Edmonton.
Either that or the B’s negotiate it down to the 2nd round Toronto pick.
I think I would prefer Penner over the #2 pick right now, because I think the B’s are a good offense away from the Cup over the next 2 yrs, where as that #2 pick is probably a 3-4 yr wait for solid production.
yeah. I really like Penner and I think with the right weapons around him he could be a beast for us. He will likely have 30 goals for Edmonton this season. Put him on a line with Savard and Recchi…might be somethin special. I think it is all about the right system and pairings. I would have to agree and say I would take Penner for the #2 pick. Maybe trade Ryder for Patrick O’sullivan and 3rd round pick. That would be a good deal for this team.

Just a thought….
I’m don’t really know Penner’s value….so I don’t know if this is reasonable for both sides, but along the lines of what you wrote, something like this might work:
To Edm:
Tim Thomas
Michael Ryder
Toronto’s 1st round pick
To Boston:
Dustin Penner
Khabibulin
If Thomas agrees to waive his NMC to be the Starter in Edmonton, you’d save 1.25 million in cap space a year (both goalies contracts expire in 2013) while getting a goalie who was playing almost as well as Thomas is this year before he hurt himself (in front of a worse defense). That way if Tuukka gets hurt or regresses, you’d still have a good goalie to plug in.
You get to dump Ryder’s underachieving ass and clear his salary and obviously you get Penner.
Now again, I don’t know what Penner’s value is….I just came up with this based on your post and the suggestions that other players might be involved. =)
Penner
ESPN Insider is reporting the Oil want 2 picks in the top 3 badly. So, they would probably insist on getting the #1 from Toronto. Penner for the Toronto pick is too rich for my blood, but Penner and Sam Gagner for Ryder (or Wideman) and the #2? That would at least get my attention. Ryan Whitney even more so, but they just signed him long term, so he won’t be going anywhere.
Honestly, though, if that pick is #1 overall, I’m not sure there’s anything the Oilers could give up that would make me pull the trigger. I want Taylor Hall on this team in a bad way.
Hall is pretty small for what the B's typically like in their wings
I’m not saying you don’t draft him.
But if you can get Penner, + Ganger for that pick and Ryder – I think you look hard at it.
Not sure what Penner and Gagner would do to the cap though either
The B’s would have to sign Gagner to a new deal, since he’s an RFA after this season. They have some cap room, but Wheeler, Paille, Seidenberg, Stuart and Boychuk are all free agents, so they won’t have a ton to play with. They’ll also need to be thinking about extensions for Chara, Bergeron and Sturm.
Looking at the future cap situation, it’s increasingly important that they dump one of the three truly awful salaries on the team: Thomas, Ryder or Wideman. If the Oil would take two of those lousy contracts for Penner and Gagner, I’d hand them the #2 with glee.
Not sure how much importance I'd put on resigning Chara for the B's
he’s already showing his age this season I think, not sure what type of contract could be worked out with him, but I think $9m or anywhere near that annually is a pass for the B’s
Chara is still top one of the 10 defensemen in the League. If it was my team I would keep him.
If I want your opinion, I'll give it to you.

He’s making 7.5 mil against the cap currently. I don’t see him making more with the next contract.

My mistake - not sure how I had $9m in my head
with this in mind, I’d say the $5-6m range would be as high as I’d go for him,
Maybe if we get him on a longer-term contract like Savard (p.s. yes please)
