Bruins looking to wrap up series in Buffalo

Photo

The Bruins will try to wrap up their first round series with the Buffalo Sabres when they take the ice tonight at HSBC Arena. The Bruins extended the series lead to 3-1 after Miroslav Satan's goal in double overtime of Game 4 on Wednesday tonight in Boston. The Bruins found themselves down 2-0 in the third period, but were able to battle back and force overtime thanks to goals from David Krejci and Patrice Bergeron. The B's would like to get this series over with tonight, while the Sabres will need to play like a desperate team if they want to keep their season alive.

Notes:

- Instead of taking accountability for his team after blowing a two goal lead in the third period, Buffalo Sabres Head Coach Lindy Ruff blamed the loss entirely on the officials. Note to Self: The key to keeping your job is to reflect blame on to others. I will have to remember that when I am up for a performance review at work.

H/T to Die By The Blade for the video

- According to John Vogl of the Buffalo News, Thomas Vanek does not look ready to return to the lineup.

- Marc Savard is in Buffalo with the team and will skate in the morning skate on Friday. He is not expected to play in this series.

- Stephen Harris of The Boston Herald gives Matt Hunwick props for his postseason play.

- The Sabres have scored first in all 4 games.

- The games starts at 7:00 and will air on NESN and CBC (north of the border). The Public Skate (open thread) gets underway at 6:30.

I’m surprised lindy didn’t get himself thrown out of the game…

I didn’t like the officiating either, (Like how McCormick gets one for Sturm hitting Rask and Begin runs a pick on Miller and gets nothing)

Kaleta’s penalty was boarding because the number on his back was 36(and charging [6 strides when the limit is 4] but they never call those anymore), but he should know better than to hit people in the third period when they are looking to call penalties on him.

This led me to the conclusion that the ref on the sabres side of the ice was calling nothing and the ref on the Bruins side of the ice was calling everything.

Whining about officiatting worked for three other teams these playoffs, so i consider it a strategic move.

Absolutely it’s strategic. “Why is my bad team getting beaten by that bad team? Must be the refs!”

What really scares me is (not this series, but some of the other ones) many of the series have really bad officiating as opposed to just slightly bad.

Then consider next year. These are the “best” half of the referees they have. They (and me) knew this day was coming, but i had thought they’d hold out one more year, but then they lost 2 refs to career-ending injuries this year and that worsed the problem that most of their refs were recruited in the 1980s.

Generally when a ref is in a retirement year they don’t work the playoffs. Kerry Frazer screwed us in one of his last games of his career. Mick McGoo is gone.

Don’t tell nobody or nothin but I think reffing in hockey is just really really difficult.

Its recruiting problems. They are experiencing significantly negative population growth. They actually asked McCreury to cancel his retirement they were so short on refs.

I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that a lot of leagues have really high turnover for reffing, moreso now than before. I hope this doesn’t become a serious problem. Of course this also means I might be able to become an NHL ref if I start now.

Hopefully Boston can wrap it up tonight. Buffalo has to be wondering what they have to do to win since they’ve had 2 goal leads twice in two of the three games they have lost. Boston needs to go out and by physical and score first.

torres had only 5 points for them post-trade

And none were goals. I thought that he was slightly more effective last game but still not worth a second round pick. The B’s already have a Torres, his name is blake wheeler

I could totally be like the tinfoil hats and post youtube videos of the refs watching the missed calls (like the slash on one of the bruins goals… and the fact that McCormick didn’t actually make contact with rask…) and claim that its because they all want us to lose, but i’m not a Red wings fan.

Refs did their best. Their best just happened to suck.

I agree, though, with many of the sabres posters. If a ref isn’t going to have the balls to make calls, why even have refs with them in the playoffs? At least Kelly Sutherland made calls, even if I don’t agree with them. I don’t think the other ref made a call all game.

Tyler Ennis: Freed from Portland!

by Ubiquitous on Apr 23, 2010 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions

There has been plenty of calls and non calls that have been questionable since game one. Going for and against both teams. The problem Buffalo has is they haven’t capitlized on any of them while the Bruins have. Kaleta and Lucic boarding calls were both bogus. The chara boarding in game one was awful. The non boarding by Vankek on Wheeler in game one. Myers has thown 2 elbows at bruins heads, connecting with Boychuk and missing on Bergeron. Theyy could’ve even called something on Begin during his 3 hit shift on Kaleta when the 3rd hit split him above the eye when he kissed the glass.

Buffalo has failed miserably at the chance they had and that is why they will lose this series, not cuz of the refs.
