Joe Haggerty: Boychuk's agent optimistic about Bruins negotiations
Joe Haggerty of CSNNE.com is reporting that the Bruins are in the early stages of negotiations with Johnny Boychuk's agent Gerry Johannson.
There are some interesting quotes from Johannson in Haggerty's piece. What I read from it is that it seems like the Bruins have thrown a lowball offer out there as a feeler and the Boychuk camp is playing the waiting game until the offer gets bumped up or until they can test the waters on July 1st.

The one caveat: A free agent’s market value is exactly what another team is crazy enough or desperate enough to push a player’s way once they’re free to negotiate. If the Boychuk camp knew a team was coming in with a Jeff Finger-type deal (4 years, $14 million) on July 1 then the situation gets a bit murkier, and it becomes much less of a certainty that Boychuk returns to the Bruins. The Finger deal is still used as a cautionary tale around the NHL when it comes to giving a player big money after one good NHL season, and Boychuk could be in that category.
Considering what Ference got…probably going to be more than 1.5. Then again I’m not an NHL GM and it’s entirely possible that his couple of big hits made him seem better than he was.

They must be asking for more than 1.5.
Somebody other than PC will probably give it to him beause of those hits.

You guys really really really really really really really really really really really really really don’t want another Jeff Finger.
You’re just going to have to trust me.

I’m just glad they don’t have to deal with Wade Arnott this summer…I don’t think. Although I don’t knew who everyone is represented by.

I’m guessing Stuart at 1.75 and Boychuk at 1.25. Even that would leave the defense payroll at 21.25. The idea of Matt Hunwick moving to the wing has been bounced around, and I think I would like to see how that look. It has worked on a short-term basis, and it is not unheard of.

hunwick on wing isn't a bad idea....
….i’m pretty sure we can all agree that Hunwick’s ability to move the puck is his greatest asset, not his defensive abilities. He would make a good power forward…..not to mention he didn’t look all that bad when he played forward in the past
Hunwick would not be a “power forward”. Besides, the B’s need guys that can move the puck on the blue line. I say keep him as a D-man.
by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Jun 11, 2010 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions
let me know next time we agree on something ;-)
I never really said “make him a forward”, I was just saying it isn’t an awful idea if they have extra pieces. I didn’t mean a power forward like a Lucic, i just meant a gritty/grinder style forward like Yelle or Begin.
don’t they have some guys who can move the puck on the blue line right now? Seidenberg, Ference, Hunwick, Stuart, Wideman can all move the puck pretty well…..
Move the puck from their own zone against an aggressive forecheck has been an issue for this team for awhile and continues to be.
by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Jun 11, 2010 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions
That’s true.
But at the same time, we’re talking about a team that has a leading goal scorer of 22 (or something, I’m on the phone can’t multitask). Our forechecking needs help. What’s the point of a great defense if you can’t score?
And don’t expect hall of seguin to make our offense too notch.
by delta on Jun 11, 2010 6:52 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Valid points, but I think Hunwick has great potential as an offensive, puck-moving defensemen. Look what he did in his rookie season. I don’t think moving him up to play wing a full-time basis is the right move. The forwards can’t score if the defensemen don’t create chances for them by getting them the puck on the break-out.

We are going to lose either Stuart or Boychuk, signing both doesn’t seem all that likely at this point. Personally, I’d like to keep Boychuk, but I’d be happy if we re-signed Stuart for a reasonable amount.
Agree there

Something in the neighborhood of $1.4-1.8 million per season for 2-3 years should be the eventual price tag for a defenseman now entering the prime of his career.
That seems a touch low, but if they locked him up for something like 3 years at between $5 and $5.5M, I’d be very happy.
Really? Because that would be a terrible deal. If they really want 5 million they should go talk to Glen Sather and thanks for the memories Johnny.

Wait, I misread that as 5-5.5 million per year, which would be insane.
3 years at 5.4 million total works out to 1.8, so basically the high end of what Haggs suggests. Not unreasonable. Of course I’m all for lower cap hits.

I don’t know. I think 1.5 is close to right on for guy with 60 NHL games on his resume that made 500K last year. I’m gonna miss him.
by SkateHitShoot on Jun 11, 2010 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions
I'd say skip out on Boychuck....
……and Stuart too. We have very limited cap space as we all know and I was never completely floored by either of these guys. Sure, Boychuck laid some great hits but that doesn’t mean he’s an amazing all around blue liner. As for Stuart, we seem to have enough puck moving defensemen for now.
I’d rather see them use the $$ on resigning Recchi and Satan, because we need goals and some veteran leadership for the incoming rookie(s)
But if I were forced to choose I’d say sign whoever gives up the better deal. Both players are similar in age and have similar statistics.
Maybe Stuart would give us a hometown discount?
Stuarts a RFA, Boychuk a UFA, so Stuart might end up being the better deal.

Boychuk's great, but...
I would prefer keeping Stuart myself. He may not have the “booming slapshot”, but I like the physical play, and he’s proven that he doesn’t take shifts off.
Boychuk I like beacuse hes a shot blocking machine on defense and can score a little

can you elaborate on that?
because if you’ve been following this team for more than just one or two season, you’ll understand that Stuart brings just as much of not more to the table than boychuk does.
Stuart has more nhl experience and is an above average defenseman. Don’t assume he’s worse than johnny just because he was injured last season.

Since when is Stuart a puck moving defenseman? He is a physical defensive D-man. If you let Boychuk and Stuart walk, there is a huge hole on the blue line.

Since……now?
I just think he moves the puck better than he throws the body. That’s all I’m saying. I’ve always thought of him as a quarterback style D-guy who makes good passes and has a decent wrister.
I just think either of these guys are somewhat replaceable. Agree to disagree?
Stuart is known, and has gotten better every year. Boychuk had a good half-year and a great playoff run. I think it is obvious who should be kept if the choice was between these 2 players. Stuart.

I’m torn on this debate. I’ve been a huge fanof Stuart’s pretty much since he first came up. He’s been solid for the B’s since pretty much his first call-up, you could tell he was going to be a very solid d-man. Before this season he was an a iron man of sorts. He played 100% every shift of every game. Boychuk on the other hand is coming into his own. Plays very good defensively and has a booming shot from the point. He played extremely well in the playoffs along side Chara. I think in long run though i think keeping Boychuk will be better. Both players will get about the same money, but the fact that Stuart is an RFA and you can actually something in trading him is what decided it for me. Keep Boychuk and then trade Stuart’s rights for a second or a decent prospect I think is the best option. In this situation you solidify the Defense for next season, as well as, stocking up for the future as well. I won’t exactly be excited to see Stuart leave one bit, but it make the team better in more then one way.
