SB Nation Boston Editor's Pick
Possible trade scenario?
I was reviewing some of the off-season needs for teams on TSN.ca and it came to mind that the Bruins have some options in how to relieve some cap space. The Penguins have long been searching for wingers to play with Crosby and Malkin. Other than Malone, a 20 goal scorer that got pumped up to 30, no one has come close to fitting that role. Perhaps they might be interested in Ryder who has scored high 20s-low 30s playing with lesser talent?
That being said, the Pens are likely to try to trade Jordan Staal as the general perception is that he's a 1st or 2nd line center on any team but the Pens, Red Wings, Sharks, abd Bruins. The Flames have always been searching for someone to play with Iginla.
Yes, I'm suggesting a three way trade along the lines of:
To Pens
Michael Ryder
To Flames
Jordan Staal
To Boston
Prospects/picks/cheap grinders just to save cap room.
What do you guys think?

I wouldn’t mind it. Question is, why would the Pens trade Staal? I’ve heard they could trade him for Jason Spezza, but I doubt for Ryder.

the Pens are looking for competent wingers to play with Malkin and Crosby instead of lining them up with 3rd line caliber players. That said, why would they want Spezza, a centre, that costs more than Staal?

True, but then why would they want Ryder and his salary?

When was the last three-way trade in the NHL?

I think one of the Leafs trades before the deadline was a three way.
by BruinsSelectSeguin on Jun 8, 2010 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions
Almost.
Technically it wasn’t, but it sorta was:
Toronto traded Alexei Ponikarovsky and a 6th round pick to Pittsburgh for Luca Caputi and Martin Skoula.
Toronto trades Martin Skoula to the NJ Devils for a 5th round pick.
The idea I with the late round picks was (i think) Pens wanted to get rid of Skoula, and probably told the Leafs something like “we’ll give you this guy in the deal, whatever pick you get for him you trade us back a pick a round later”. Something like that. So Leafs moved up about 15 or so spots in the draft late in the 5th round. Not a huge impact.

They technically traded a the sixth round pick later on for some random late-round pick the pens had rights to.
Not even the Toronto Maple Leafs could kill my optimism
Tyler Ennis: Freed from Portland!
What a wacky trade.

2009 Draft
To Brian Burke:
-Bag of M&M’s
-Bottle of Molson Light
To Bob Gainey:
-Can of Mountain Dew
-Moon Pie
To Don Waddell
-Burke’s 2nd round of Labatt’s via Hitchcock
There is an article from Carolina suggesting Chad LaRose and a 2nd round pick for #2overall. Am I blinded by hype and homerism or would this be something PC would have to seriously consider. Seems to me they are putting something xtra in the tobacco down there.
Definitely the wacky tobaccy

That's a seriously back asswards deal
A boarder line 20 goal scorer and a 2nd round pick for the #2 overall?
Maybe, MAYBE if that was Carolina’s #1 and #2 plus LaRose, but even then….wacky
Found a report on this from Carolina's PV
And it does include #7 + LaRose + 2R pick and/or a near NHL ready player like Patrick Dwyer
That makes more sense, but I’m not sure LaRose gives enough offensively lift to give up on Hall or Seguin.
It would be PR suicide
The fans are all expecting Seguin or Hall and to give up that to stock picks like Belichek would go over like a lead blimp.
That and Chiarelli has said if he’s trading it he’s getting the #1 pick.

I don’t expect for a second that pick is going anywhere.
I was just trying to gauge what that pick is worth. a top ten first – a second – and a 20 goal scorer?
I’d still say no but I don’t know what it would take to say yes.

I would think top 5 pick, maybe a 2nd and bonifed scorer on the wing - for cheap
in other words, it’d be a pretty ridiculous deal.
B’s can’t give up on the opportunity of T or T without getting a noticable return. To me the ability to grab one of the elite defensemen plus a 20+ goal scoring wing who’s south of 30 yrs old is approaching the area of consideration
Whew! I thought my fellow Leaf fans were the only ones who came up with crazy ass trade proposals.

please...
KEEP THE PICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So the Pens get Ryder and lose Staal? They wouldn’t do that for three Ryders.
