Bruins want to "Sever CapSpace"
Bruins GM Peter Chairelli told reporters that the Bruins would need to "sever cap space" to re-sign winger Blake Wheeler. Now, I don't really like this. Wheeler is a mediocre winger at best and does not show up on some nights. I have no issue with the Bruins clearing cap space, but it's who they clear it with. Tim Thomas rumors appear to have died and Chairelli reiterated that Thomas wants to remain a Bruin. Is Chairelli thinking of trading Marc Savard and his cap space to keep Blake Wheeler? I hope not.

Eh - I think you are selling Wheels a bit low
he’s had a decent 2 yrs for an under 25 winger with size. He’s not perfect and he’s not ideal, but there’s plenty to like about him still.
I don’t like moving Savard necessarily directly to sign Wheeler, but vs other moves they could make, trading Thomas or waiving Ryder – in moving savard they are at least likely to get back something of value in addition to the space to resign Wheels
Savard may well be traded. I have said for some time, however, and will reiterate, that I would be stunned if it’s just for cap space. I am more than willing to believe that they would like to trade him to get a useful player AND cap space; that makes perfect sense. However, I don’t think they’re going to just dump him.
I believe that outrighting Ryder to the minors is their Plan C for clearing cap space. Plan A was to trade Thomas, and that appears not to have panned out. Plan B is a Savard trade, and they haven’t found the right deal yet, and may not.
Well they tried trading ryder at the deadline last season so I think a trade involving him is a plan B. The idea of sending him down to the minors is likely much lower on the totem pole as they await the results of wheeler’s arbitration.

Sending Tyler back to the OHL would take care of the cap problem also.
I’m just saying it’s just another option, not that I think it should happen!

Nothing wrong with the kid getting another year of development and still being on an Entry level contract in 4 years.

Many pundits have compared Seguin to Stamkos who took most of a full season to really get good. I say the Bruins should have him play 9 games, then send him down and give him a shot to dominate the WJC and allow him to dominate that league and bring him next year. We’re ok at centre, and at wing if Horton produces as expected (30 ish goals), there will be a trickle down effect to the other wingers on other lines from facing less fierce competition.

Stamkos also had Barry Melrose and his “go out there or whatever” style of coaching to mess with him.
Then again the Bruins have been pushing the Seguin-in-Boston-this-fall thing, so…

You guys are right that Tyler can go back and probably dominate, and i agree they look pretty good up front by adding Horton, but like I said before, I’d shit if they sent him back. After all the hype and the record crowds at the Dev camp. What a hard sell that would be for PC eventhough they might not NEED him in Boston this year.
Maybe they found what they need in Horton, here’s hoping he pots 30.
If they sign him can they still send him back or will they not sign him until they are sure he is staying with the big club?

As I implied in my post, he can play 9 games without eating up the full value of his contract.
For all the criticisms on Melrose, he was right to an extent to say Stamkos wasn’t immediately NHL ready. Even after he was fired, it still took 50 or so games before he started to take off.

Ugh, I completely disagree. He’s got nothing left to prove in junior hockey. What’s another year of dominating inferior competition with mediocre teammates around him going to accomplish?
Of all the options for taking care of the cap problem, leaving Seguin in the OHL for another year is the worst by a country mile.
I don’t think it takes care of the cap problem, I’m just thinking that currently there’s not a whole lot of room for him on the Bruins, playing-time-wise.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’d much rather he spend another year in juniors dominating on a top line and playing 20+ minutes than dragging Shawn Thornton around the ice for 6-7 minutes a night in the NHL.

I would be more inclined to agree if I thought he would be a 4th liner, but the plan seems to be to have him on the third line, if not as a center, then as a winger. I’d expect he’ll see a respectable amount of ice time, probably 14-18 min per game. I’d much rather have him get used to the physicality of the pro game, as well as the length of the season (for a fine example as to why that matters, I call as Exhibit A the 08-09 season submitted by Blake Wheeler).
I’m going to have to agree with Cornelius. He’s better off playing full time quality minutes than playing with a bunch of role players. The Bruins aren’t too bad in that respect with how Julien likes to roll his lines.

The season is still over 2 months away. Let’s not get our panties in a bunch… yet.

Why freaked out?
Think KPD’s story today in on the mark. Why make any moves at the moment, when the most obvious one is right in place (and mentioned as Plan C by Phil above): Ryder goes down. Simple, if he doesn’t produce with one of three excellent passing centers, Providence is just a short train ride away. Would this solve all cap problems? Assuming you’re not going to get much back for trading any of these guys, who would you rather be without next year? Savard, Thomas, or Ryder? I’ve got to think that this is the simple math PC is working.
