Blake Wheeler files for arbitration; Mark Stuart does not
Blake Wheeler's agent Matt Keator has informed the Bruins that his client has filed for arbitration. All players who are eligible for arbitration had to make their intentions known by 5:00 PM on Monday.
Mark Stuart, who is also represented by Keator did not file for arbitration. According to Keator, the sides are closing in on a new deal for the defenseman, saying "We're close enough that I felt we didn't need to get to arbitration".

It pretty much means that if they don’t re-sign him by his arbitration hearing date, a third party will decide what his salary will be. The Bruins can then choose to re-sign him or not. By having a player go to arbitration, it also allows them another opportunity to buy-out players.

to buy out any players or just wheeler??
cause i honestly feel like they should have give a serious look to buying out ryder, from what i hear it would have saved them 2-2.5 million off the cap. wheelers salary shouldn’t be that much, especially if decided by a third party, and they can give one of the young guys a shot in ryders spot

As I understand it, they get an opportunity to buy out any player. That allows them to re-work things to try sign the player who went to arbitration. Chiarelli has pretty much said that he does not plan on buying anyone out though.

They bought out Murray during that second window after Wideman went to arbitration.

Ryder’s Buyout on Capgeek is 1,333,333 for the next 2 years. Currently he’s under contract for this year for 4 million. Do you think we can get a player for 2,666,667 that will be more productive than Ryder?
Ryder had a paltry 18-15-33 year last year. This tied him for 7th in overall points on the Bruins with Marc “played half the games” Savard. If we can really use the 2.66m (and eat the dead cap space of 1,333,333 for the next 2 years) then yeah, lets buy him out. But if that 1.33m is going to help re-sign Bergeron and Chara it might make sense to keep him on the books and hope for the best.
Just don’t Andy Ference him for crying out loud.

I think Ryder is going to have a good year. It is a contract year for him.

it’s also time for an “up” year going by his stats…here’s hoping, since I doubt we’re moving him before this year.

It doesn’t necessarily mean that Wheeler is gone.

I think it actually means the opposite
There’s a decent review of Wheeler’s career to date on the globe today
Fluto seems mostly neutral in his review. Personally I didn’t realize how often Wheels was on the PK this year also -that even furthers my belief he should be resigned.
The only negatives I have are that he’s not as physical as he could be and he need to make better decisions with the puck. Both of those are fairly coach able traits for a 25 year old 2way winger with size

He also needs to stop taking so many lazy penalties and not go offsides as much as he does.

All he needs to do is:
Play more physically
Make better decisions with the puck
Stop taking lazy penalties and
Stop going offsides.
so what’s left?

dont forget about how often he randomly just falls over. while amusing, it doesnt inspire much confidence
That's great! We almost have him figured out!
All he needs to do is:
DO NOT randomly fall over
Play more physically
Make better decisions with the puck
Stop taking lazy penalties and
Stop going offsides.
I think they teach most of this stuff in the peewee Learn to play Hockey Camps, maybe that would help!

That’s true. If he gets awarded less than what he made beforehand, he might be worth taking a look at.
I’m not a big Wheeler fan myself, but I think he gets wayyyy too much shit on here (the comments section)
The arbitration amount can not be less than 85% of his last salary.
