Savard Deal to be Blocked?
After the Iyla Kovalchuk mess, arbitrator Kevin Boch will be looking at four other contracts: Chris Pronger, Roberto Loungo, Marian Hossa, and our own Marc Savard.
We know the Bruins have been trying to trade Savard's $4.007 mm all offseason long. So if he becomes a free agent, how likely are they to retain him now?
You all know my stance; I have never wanted to trade him. But with this news reaching the Bruins, do they want to trade him now to get value for him beacuse of the posibility of impending free agency?

It’s written into the CBA that this can happen, and the deal hasn’t kicked in yet.

They can touch any contract, even an approved one. They can fine, remove draft picks, and even nullify games. But I don’t see them crapping on chicago right now.

You still have time to edit the title of this post to “Bloched”

Linking a sports law blog on the subject. Informative supplemental reading:

Just to clear up a misconception in bestbostonsport’s post, Bloch will not be looking at these contracts unless they go to arbitration and he is assigned to hear the case. Bloch is a neutral party. He does not work for the league and cannot investigate player’s contract situations.

Honestly, I think Savard’s deal is one of the least likely to be nullified. Now that Pronger and Luongo deals though…

Of the lot, Savard’s has the shortest term, and doesn’t push him past 40 by the end. Although I think Pronger’s is just as long but he’ll be 42 at the end of it.

Pronger’s is also a 35+ contract so the team is on the hook for the cap hit even if he does retire.

Roughly speaking, Hossa’s is the least likely to be nullified, since he’s already been paid a year. I don’t care WHAT the CBA says about the league’s ability to look into contracts, if the guy’s already a year into it, it’s not getting voided. If the contract is invalid, do they take his name off the Stanley Cup? Redo the finals without Hossa? Does poor Hossa have to give up his long-awaited (and much-deserved) Stanley Cup ring? It opens up a can of worms that’s far easier to leave unopened.
Then Pronger, since the Flyers (snicker) will get stuck with the cap hit anyway, so it can’t be circumvention.
Then Savard, since it’s entirely possible he’ll still be playing at 39.
Right, they’re sorta stuck now. Hossa’s contract is the next-worse offender but they’re not about to vacate the stanley cup in chicago or make him a free agent when Chicago’s already blown up the team.
I could see them maybe trying to cut off a year or two of Luongo’s, which would be hilarious. Imagine if we had a player with a 5m+ cap hit putting up Thomas numbers…for 10 years.
