Bruins STILL Looking to Trade Savvy
I was hoping that maybe this whole contract investigation thing with the NHL was going to make the Bruins rethink the plan to trade Marc Savard. Then came this tweet, from Murph:
Was just told that Bruins are still actively shopping Marc Savard but no takers due to contract issue w/NHL.
Well, so much for that.
At this point, it's safe to assume that nothing's going to happen with the contract. Read ousted union chief Paul Kelly's thoughts in this article, which are essentially identical to some the points I made in my FanPost a couple weeks ago. Indeed, ESPN Rumor Central postulates that the NHL is just dragging this out to piss off the Bruins, who have apparently been shopping Savard since 5 minutes after the season ended, and now have to put things on hold while the league pretends to make a big deal about his contract.
No GM is going to trade for Savard until this is resolved. Sure, there's pretty much no chance that he's going to have his contract voided, but if there's even a 1% chance, and you trade for the guy, and then his deal gets voided...well, that's the sort of thing that gets a GM fired, isn't it?
What has me surprised is that no one has worked out a contingent deal. If the Bruins are shopping him as aggressively as Murph and ESPN and whoever else say they are, why hasn't there been a deal where another team says "look, we'll give you X for Savard, but we can't make it official until the contract business is sorted out"? We can assume there's no such deal because we surely would have heard about it by now...or at the very least, we would have heard an end to the "Savvy's on the trade block" rumors.
Savard is a point per game center with a very reasonable contract (so reasonable, in fact, that the league believes it circumvented the salary cap), and yet, despite reports that they are shopping him aggressively, the Bruins can't seem to make a deal. This suggests a few possible conclusions:
1. The Bruins are asking for the moon - possible, but if they've been trying all summer, and haven't found a taker, why wouldn't they recognize that the market value is not what they suspected, and either lower their price tag or take the "for sale" sign off him? That's what happened with Tim Thomas, it seems. They tried to trade him, found no takers, and said "screw it, there's worse fates than having our backup goaltender being the guy who won a Vezina Trophy 2 years ago."
2. Teams are worried about Savard's injury problems and rep as a d-bag - Disclaimer: I'm uninterested in whether that rep is fair or not, nor how significant it may be. There have been enough rumblings that Savard is a locker room cancer that there is obviously at least some feeling that he may be a douche. I don't know, I don't care, and I'm not interested in discussing it. What is relevant is whether it's affecting his trade value, and when combined with his head injury, it's fair to wonder if teams are shying away because of that. Remember that he only played 7 games in the postseason, and though he played pretty well, head injuries can have a cumulative effect. Hockey ain't ballet (not unless you'rhttp://www.sbnation.com/admin/entries/new?community_id=188&entry_type=FanPoste Phil Kessel), so another shot to the head is certainly possible, and what then? Shopping him aggressively isn't likely to be helpful to the perception that he's first-rate, mentally, socially and physically, either.
3. The rumors are overblown - this seems like the least likely possibility to me. Savard said he was hurt by the trade rumors, so obviously he's heard something. We've heard too much from too many sources to suggest otherwise. I do not get the perception that Peter Chiarelli is orchestrating some grand smokescreen here. First, he doesn't seem like the type who enjoys mind games, and second (and more importantly) what possible good would come of it?
If indeed there are concerns about his health that are driving the seeming lack of interest in Savard, then the best thing Boston could do (if they're set on trading him) is pull him off the block, start him on the top line with (probably) Lucic and Horton, get things going, and then see if teams are satisfied enough to come back to the bargaining table.
For my part, I've said this before, but David Krejci is coming off an injury that cost him the end of the playoffs, Patrice Bergeron missed 9 games last year, Tyler Seguin has played as many NHL minutes as I have and last year's Bruins couldn't score if they were locked in a hotel room with Lindsay Lohan and a garbage bag full of coke...I wouldn't be in a big hurry to trade a guy who's scored 295 points in the 279 games he's been sporting the spoked B on his chest.

That line is priceless! A bright spot in these weeks of ho-hum ness!

That was indeed classic.
the mental image of Lohan and a garbage bag of coke is pretty awesome for me on this Monday.
Thanks Phun/Phil.
That was a great line. Nice post, man! I will take option 4 (all of the above) on why these rumors are still out there.

Byline: "Bestbostonsports grabs paper bag, begins to hyperventilate."
Personally, I’m still of the “believe it when I see it” mindset. The Bs might want him gone, but I can’t imagine the market is there based on how this offseason has gone.
I’m in the same camp as you regarding this trade. If he leaves, I won’t be happy about it but I guess that’s how it goes. All the will-he-won’t-he just sorta gets tiring, though.

I agree! These rumors have gone from red hot to silence that I almost wonder how much is actually true. Even TT said all the stuff he read this off-season was mostly way off base regarding him and his situation.
By the way great BYLINE!

hey!
I thought the rumors stopped, and was hoping for them to.
Whatever at this point, this is the type of crap the Bruins always pull. Never keep the right players.

Savard being "Actively" shopped is about as vague as you can get
I mean, how are we defining actively?
Beyond that there are just as many questions about Savard as there is benefit to him right now:
Great contract…but the NHL is reviewing it.
Great PPG average….but that was before a serious head injury.
Top line center…..but rumors about how he gets along with teammates.
Who is going to touch that and what would they give up for it? Not nearly as much as they may around the trade deadline. Also, as much as I like Savvy as a PPG guy, there is no guarantee he is still that guy in ’10 – look at how long it has taken Bergy to get back to 90-100%…
I've said it before...
They have to know something about Savard’s state that we don’t. Maybe they brought him back too soon and they know he’s not going back to what he was. Maybe he is a cancer in the locker room and his attitude contributed to the choke. It can’t just be “cap relief”.
By the same token, I have to wonder if it wouldn’t be the first domino in a wider ranging move, or perhaps a reason to go after an FA we haven’t heard linked to the team yet. Maybe they feel they can get a Bobby Ryan (I know, I know, not gonna happen) or somesuch who would be another scoring winger. Then they can keep Seguin at center and not lose a whole lot on the scoring side of things. But this can’t just be them looking to keep space open so they don’t have to dispose themselves of Michael flippin’ Ryder.
I am tired of these rumors..
Just like pretty much the rest of you I want his to stay a Bruin. I am so tired of hearing that the Bruins are shopping Savard. Their power play was a joke last year and moving their top guy is ridiculous. Every time a trade is mentioned Brian “Al Davis” Burke is the first to be mentioned as interested.
Is it just me or is every guy, not just Savard that is mentioned to possibly be moved, the first team interested is the Leafs.
Part of that is that Toronto is a huge media market for hockey, so there are a whole bunch of writers with not a lot to do right now, so they’re all “How about…..Savard?” It’s like Montreal and Lecavelier rumors.
We also heard that Savard is only looking to go places near his family, like Ottawa or Toronto.

You’re probably right. With nothing better to do in hockey crazed Toronto, why let the facts get in the way of a good story!

WTF?
Just saw this: the Bruins want Begin back?!?
I can’t fathom a good reason for that, unless they’re looking at him on a two-way contract, where he’d be spending most of his time in Providence, and would be there for depth (i.e. the role Trent Whitfield was going to fill). But the article cites cap issues…which wouldn’t be an issue if they’re planning to play him primarily in the minors.
They can’t possibly be thinking “we’ll trade Savard, save some cap room, and use some of that to sign Begin”…can they? That seems unbelievably stupid. No, that can’t be right.
Probably, Begin’s agent felt that just chalking it all up to “cap issues” was the path of least resistance in explaining things to his client.
If Begin will sign for cheap, why not? Lots of NHLers on the outside looking in this year.

If he’s willing to sign a two-way deal, compete for a 4th line job and probably ride the I-95 shuttle, I have no problem with that. I object to the idea of signing him and handing him a job, however. Anything that forces Brad Marchand to spend another full year in Providence should be avoided; it’s time to see what he can do.
I’m not sure where Marchand really fits in to the lineup other than as a call-up.

Considering he was a point per game player in the AHL last year, was +14 for a poor Providence team, has one full season in the AHL and one where he rode the I-95 shuttle to his credit, and is ranked as the #2, #3 or #4 Bruins prospect on depending on who you ask…I should hope he has a legit shot at playing regularly.
Begin was worthless last year except for about 3 games towards the end of the season (or maybe it was the playoffs, I forget) when he finally started to play with the grit and intensity that was promised. I think Campbell is an upgrade at Begin’s spot.

Yeah
I’ll take Campbell. I dont see a spot for Begin on this team.
