SBNation Expansion draft: UPDATE: Ryder and Ference drafted.

So SBNation is doing a mock expansion draft because hockey isn't here yet and we're all a little bored, no matter how many times we watch Brady2Moss make magic in the preseason.  The first part of the exercise went as expected and a couple of Canadians still crying over the Jets and Nordiques get to feel a little better about themselves as a result.

Now comes the interesting part:  They'll be having a mock expansion draft.  Each team gets a chance to protect some but not all of the players.  Here's the criteria, stolen from the post over at Hockey Wilderness, where they're having trouble picking enough players to protect, and I don't blame them:

- Teams can protect either "1 goalie, 5 defensemen and 9 forwards" OR "2 goalies, 3 defensemen and 7 forwards."

- If you go the two goalie route, at least one goalie left unprotected must have played in at least 10 games last season OR 25 games in the last two seasons combined. One game = at least 31 minutes.

- Each team must leave unprotected at least one defenseman who appeared in 40 games last season OR 70 games in the last two seasons combined.

- Each team must leave unprotected at least two forwards who appeared in 40 games last season OR 70 games in the last two seasons combined.

- Players who have played in 49 or fewer games are automatically exempt and do not need to be protected.

So Seguin is exempt, but Johnny "51 games" Boychuk is not.

What do you think?  Rask and 5 defensemen and 9 forwards?  Rask and Thomas and 3 defensemen and 7 forwards?

UPDATE: Well, the draft has happened and the players have been picked:

Michael Ryder went to Winnipeg 5th overall.

Andrew Ference went to Quebec 37th overall.

Cap problems:  FIXED!  You're welcome.

You’d keep Thomas, eh?

I suppose on the Bruins, that’d be the major debate.

Perhaps Stuart vs. Boychuk up for debate too. But that is three solid D-men to keep.

by 13_Legion on Sep 1, 2010 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Essentially, if you want to keep Thomas, you would have to sacrifice Stuart or Boychuk, either of whom would be one of the best D-men available without an absurd contract, and would be almost certain to be drafted. I believe that is a poor choice, personally.

by Phunwin on Sep 1, 2010 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Stuart is really good defensively and I love the guy but I worry about a goaltending combo of Rask/Niemi or whoever.

On the other hand, if you think the expansion team wouldn’t take Thomas, no reason to waste a protected space (like Rangers wouldn’t protect Redden, Hawks Campbell, Oilers Souray, etc).

My blog and Twitter, featuring coverage of the winger that has now terrorized over 70 NHL goalies.

My reasoning behind keeping Thomas is that he’s more valuable to us, contract and all, than Stuart and Paille and Campbell (or Thornton).

Before I ask a follow up question, how many players can be picked from one team? And once a player is picked, can some others be pulled back?

by Phunwin on Sep 1, 2010 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions

OK, I did a bit of research and answered my own question. It would seem that each expansion team has to pick one player from each NHL team, and each team can only lose one G or one D, i.e. we couldn’t lose both Stuart AND Thomas. (Put another way, one of the players picked MUST be a forward.)

That reinforces my thinking. Leaving Stuart (or Boychuk) unprotected would not just guarantee losing them, but it would guarantee NOT losing Thomas or Ference, since a team couldn’t take another G or D from the Bruins. No, I would leave Thomas, Ference, Sturm and Ryder out there and dare some team to take one of them (or, ideally, two).

by Phunwin on Sep 1, 2010 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Okay that’s a pretty good point. Now I’ve got to rethink this. I also think we don’t have to protect all of them, at least going by what they’re saying over at hockey wilderness.

Thats a good point but I can’t decide if losing Thomas would be worse than losing Boychuck or Stuart and I also think that if all three were available, Boychuck or Stuart would probably be picked before Thomas so that “only one goalie or d-man” rule can make it interesting.

by SkateHitShoot on Sep 1, 2010 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Well if you’re protecting up to 5 defensemen I’m leaving Ference out to dry of our regular top 6 defensemen.

Hockey Blog Adventure: New Post: Nathan Horton is a Goomba (or check me out on Twitter.) GO BRUINS! (and Wild!)

by Cornelius Hardenbergh on Sep 1, 2010 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

That makes sense. I guess the defensemen come down to Hunwick or Ference!
Like Arenacale said there’s too much upside with Hunwick.
Ference is a bag of question marks to me. There must be something they see in him that I can’t to give him that contract other than experience. Maybe this year he’ll stay healthy enough to show me.

by SkateHitShoot on Sep 1, 2010 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I would not protect Thomas. He’s a good goaltender, but I would love a team to take that albatross contract off our hands. I’d go the 1-5-9 route and protect the following players:

Rask

Chara, Seidenberg, Boychuk, Stuart (no need to protect another D, since I would welcome a team taking Ference and no one else is eligible)

Savard, Krejci, Bergeron, Lucic, Horton, Wheeler, Recchi, Paille, Campbell

It’s not that I believe that Paille and Campbell are all that valuable, rather, I would be seeking to leave exposed Thomas, Ference, Sturm and Ryder, our four most onerous contracts.

by Phunwin on Sep 1, 2010 11:37 AM EDT reply actions

I forgot that Hunwick is eligible; for some reason I thought he wasn’t. Make him my 5th D.

by Phunwin on Sep 1, 2010 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Rask

Chara
Seidenberg
Boychuk
Hunwick
Stuart

Savard
Lucic
Horton
Bergeron
Krejci
Recchi
Wheeler
Thornton
Paille

I was going to protect Ference, but I think Hunwick still has time to grow into his role, whereas we’ve seen Ference’s peak. Thornton may sound like a dumb idea to protect, but as SCoC mentioned in another thread, he has specific skills which benefit this team.

BTW, I'm boycotting this expansion...

They did not list Hartford as a potential destination in the initial vote. Pucky is mad.

Yes, I think it’s pretty dumb that it was the Jets and Nordiques but I think I covered that above.

I am also boycotting the expansion draft. Expansion is the last thing the NHL needs. I feared the ridicule of being any way associated with this half-baked idea. That is way you have not seen anything about it on the front page.

by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Sep 1, 2010 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not going that far

And I was half joking. I do think it’s a neat experiment, I’m a geek, I like experiments. I’m keeping an eye on it, but really more for who gets theoretically plucked from the Bruins than what the 2 teams would actually look like.

by Arenacale on Sep 1, 2010 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I kind of drew a line in the sand on this one with the other site managers. I was adamantly against this idea. It’s too late and I’m too stubborn to back down.

by Stanley Cup of Chowder on Sep 1, 2010 6:04 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s basically the idea – nothing’s going on anyways so why not have a little fun game?

Rask

Savard Bergeron Krejci Horton Lucic Recchi Thorton Paille Campbell

I didn’t want to expose Thomas but I think there will probably be other goalies exposed that are younger and make less and also if Stuart Boychuck or Hunwick were available I think one of them would be gone.

The forwards were easier Sturm can be exposed because of LTIR, Ryder or Wheeler being picked would help more than it hurts. Ryder going would take care of the cap problem and Wheeler going would reduce the number of chances I’l be swearing like an idiot at the TV this season! The rest of forwards can be protected!

Good exercise!

by SkateHitShoot on Sep 1, 2010 1:20 PM EDT reply actions

Protecting Campbell, Paille or Thornton over Wheeler is indefensible.

by Phunwin on Sep 1, 2010 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah but those guys are real hard-workin’ scrubs, and Wheeler’s just a floaty young (around) 20-goal-scorer. Where’s the upside in that?

Hockey Blog Adventure: New Post: Nathan Horton is a Goomba (or check me out on Twitter.) GO BRUINS! (and Wild!)

by Cornelius Hardenbergh on Sep 1, 2010 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Campbell and Paille get protected by process of elimination. Thornton on the other hand is a keeper to me. He’s a role player that fills his role perfectly, and is important to this team. I’m sure there are other guys out there that could fill that role, but you know what you’re getting, a hard working, well liked, blue collar type player, a fan favorite that loves being a Bruin and can kick ass!
Wheeler…I agree he has potential, he has talent oozing out his ears. I just think he’s lazy. I think he’s happy getting 15 – 19 goals without much effort. With his size and skills, if he played a more physical game he could be a 25 goal or more guy.
I’d leave him exposed and hope that he got picked so I could fill his spot with a Colbourne or Caron or some kid that has worked so hard he deserves a chance to make an impact on the big team!

by SkateHitShoot on Sep 1, 2010 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Shawn Thornton may be a cup winner but he’s not good enough at hockey for it to make sense to expose Wheeler instead of him. Same goes for Paille and Campbell.

Those three have the appropriate levels of Pugnacity, Testosterone, Belligerence, and Truculence, for sure….but it’s skill that wins games. Cam Neely is lionized in this town because he was a hardass who as also a really good hockey player.

Hockey Blog Adventure: New Post: Nathan Horton is a Goomba (or check me out on Twitter.) GO BRUINS! (and Wild!)

by Cornelius Hardenbergh on Sep 1, 2010 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Campbell is a decent 4th line center. Players of his caliber are a dime a dozen. He is a modest improvement over Steve Begin, and nothing more.

Thornton’s the same story. Yeah, he’s a nice guy and sticks up for his teammates and excels at placing his fist in other players’ faces at high speeds, but again, that’s hardly irreplaceable.

Paille is a fine penalty killer with great wheels, who, if he had the ability to finish, would probably a 10-time all-star. Alas, if he could finish, Buffalo wouldn’t have given up on him. Nice 4th liner, good for wearing the other guys out a bit, but nothing more.

Wheeler floats sometimes, absolutely. He also has more potential than those other three combined and then some. Why would you take the chance that he’d achieve it somewhere else, when the other guys you’re protecting are easily replaceable? He’s a kid; he’s probably going to get a lot better. He wouldn’t be the first young player to float for a couple years before getting it through his head that he needs to work harder to use his talent. And incidentally, he’s not THAT bad a floater; he was one of Boston’s best penalty killers last year.

by Phunwin on Sep 1, 2010 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions

You guys are both right all the 4th line guys are easily replaceable.
Wheeler could turn into some other teams Cam Neeley. I’m just at a point where I’ve given up on Wheels. I think he does float THAT bad.
Thornton.. I like. I had three spots left to fill and he got one of them. He wouldn’t have made the top six.
I’d be ok if Sturm Ryder or Wheeler got plucked!

by SkateHitShoot on Sep 1, 2010 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions

So here's the final protected list:

Rask

Chara
Seidenberg
Boychuk
Hunwick
Stuart

Savard
Horton
Krejci
Bergeron
Recchi
Lucic
Wheeler
Sturm
Paille

I’m going to go with this unless someone convinces me I’m doing it wrong.

Ryder and Ference picked, throwing it into the main post and title too.

Well, it coulda gone worse I guess, but if this happened we wouldn’t have cap problems anymore. It’s kinda disheartening that we had a not-great to downright bad contract to expose at every position.
