Hitting The Links: Welcome, Randy Cunneyworth Edition
So the Canadiens hired an anglophone coach recently, after firing Jacques Martin. Habs fans are up in arms. Milan Lucic has a hearing today with Brendan Shanahan. I've slept about 12 hours in the last 3 days.
The Bruins are at the top of every power ranking out right now which is cool. Zdeno Chara is back. Gregory Campbell is hurting but possibly okay. Hopefully Lucic will not be out tonight. That's pretty much it. Oh and oh hey, the magic number is +47, yo. Could the Bruins expand their goal differential to +50 tonight?
After the jump, the Blue Jackets' GM is delusional, Zach Hamill is doing well (yes, another positive article, sorry I'm not sorry) and another hockey team's rendition of All I Want For Christmas Is You...

While I am no great fan of Milbury, I have to say his description of his actions sounds reasonable to me. Yes, it would have been smarter for him to grab his own kid and let the other coach grab the opposing player but even so its what I would expect any coach or parent to do.
These are 12yos… they are not supposed to be fighting, even if it is hockey. How do you stop a fight? By grabbing them and pulling the kids apart.

I agree with you – it souinds to me like it was all blown out of proportion. He was dumb to grab a kid other than his own, but at the same time, people really overreact about this stuff now.

overreact
especially when they can get a settlement out of someone with cash. Pure conjecture of course, but thought crosses my mind.
Curious to hear if video surfaces, should put an end to he-said she-said one way or the other
Thought crossed my mind as well. Doubt there would be any police involvement or anything even close to it were it not Milbury.
The fact that the father of his teams goalie corroborates Mike’s story 100% helps, though would have been better had it come from a parent of an opposing player.

On Friday, the Sports Hub was saying there is indeed a video, but they were having trouble getting a hold of it. One of their guys claimed to have seen it and said it was a dumb move but definitely an overraction. I’m sure Milbury being well-known and having $ helped matters.

Daniel Paille is on a 2-game goal streak, his first since last year’s 2nd round of the playoffs…and in terms of regular season, last early april. Before that was near the end of the 08-09 season.
He had a 3-game goal streak in March 2008, which is his longest goal streak and only time he’s gone 3 games in a row with goals.

We need to give Cunneyworth
the same welcome to coaching that we gave Stevens of the Kings…
Liz and I ended up going to Providence last night, and let me tell you, Caron is getting wasted if they’re going to keep him down there. For a young kid, he was calling all the plays and dominating the ice, and he looked like an NHLer playing amongst AHLers. He’s simply a level above that, and if they can’t keep him playing with the big team, then maybe it’s time to consider him trade bait.

Has it occurred to Habs fans that they’ve already run through every single Francophone with a resume worthy of being an NHL head coach, including a guy who COULDN’T EFFING READ?!?
But ze coach speaking French...eet ees...

I know, I’m a prick for making fun of a guy who overcame a serious impairment to have a very good coaching career. Sue me.
Wow… I can’t even imagine being illiterate.
I get that the guy had a rough childhood which made learning difficult and have no issue with that but how do you continually put it off?! How do you not learn later in life as an adult when you realize just how important it is?!

Here’s the real question: it’s not like Martin had been standing on thick ice at any point this season. Why the hell didn’t they just make the move two weeks ago and promote the much more highly regarded Kirk Muller? I have no idea if the Ontario-born Muller can speak French, but he’s spent enough time in Montreal that it’s possible, and in any case, as a former captain of the Blanc, Bleu et Rouge, it’s unlikely that the fans would be having a hissy fit about this.
Wait, why am I complaining?
Muller wasn’t in their system anymore… he was coaching the Milwaukee Admirals.
You have a point that they still could have gotten him had they acted sooner. They were bringing him along to be a head coach eventually so they had already invested in him so their losing him is all the stranger.
by BobbyOrrsBastard on Dec 19, 2011 11:21 AM EST up reply actions
That’s what I don’t understand. He’s defintiely well liked by Montrealers, and I’m betting he did speak at least a little French, being a Hab (and captaining them) for years.

Scott Howson comments are a huge reason why flailing GM’s should be fired, and replaced with a new candidate. That situation screams panic trade to get me into 9th place.
What the Blue Jackets need is to trim some of the fat from that organization, finish dead last, grab Yakupov or Grigorenko, and rebuild properly.
by Michael Taylor on Dec 19, 2011 11:59 AM EST reply actions
that’s been their plan mostly for the last decade. this year they became a cap team but not with good players.

Lucic Hit
"It’s hockey, you hit and go into the boards, I don’t think it was dirty at all…Shoulder-to-shoulder and just momentum. He’s big guy, maybe double my weight. His momentum carried him into the boards awkwardly. I don’t think it was dirty at all."
-Zac Rinaldo
it's nice to see Rinaldo not being a douche, but he's clearly not great at math.
lol, DOUBLE his weight? That would put Rinaldo at like 111.

Rinaldo is a little guy though… only 169 listed. Lucic at ~230 might as well be double him… 60 pounds of muscle is huge.

Oh, who cares if Cunneyworth only speaks English
Most of his players are from Europe and two of his captains are American.
In fact, only three players on the Canadiens come from Quebec: Mathieu Darche, David Desharnais and Louis LeBlanc.
