Is it just me or have hockey referees be exceptionally bad this year. Kick Zdend Chara out, the teams Captain 10 minutes for jawin’ with an opponent? Arguably the team’s most important skater, sit half a period for a verbal spat?
Here is what I imagined happened… and please understand that all refs have an implant in their head that lets Hockey Operations communicate with them.
* "Hey, ref, it us eh in Toronto eh, umm the Boston Bruins are kicking butt right now so you need to slow them down eh. Think you can sit their Captain for ten minutes?"
Did you see the refs refuse a goal for "slight" contact outside the crease…and then call a penalty for goalie interference?
* "Hey ref is Toronto Hockey Ops again eh, if you let that goal count we will make you ref the next game in Calgary where it’s like -41C eh, so disallow that goal and give the home team a power-play to boot eh!"
Exactly how do the Carolina Hurricanes go an entire game without getting one minor penalty?
Does it drive anybody else crazy that the refs seemingly are always trying to generate interesting finishes and suspense?
Did you watch the Super Bowl? Less that 2 min in the game and one idiot on Pitt does something stoooooped, and even though they are losing the ref still pulls the flag. I watch all the major sports and without a doubt the NHL refs are the worst of the 4 major sports.
If you had a person who lived their entire life in a cave, watch a regular season game and the watch a play-off game do you think they would notice a difference. (Personally in playoffs the refs really don’t do anything beside try to get a good skate in.)
I’m curious what do you think?
