NHL actually makes exmaple of the right guy, for once
The NHL finally put its foot down, and it squished the right turd. It's about time.
Matt Cooke will miss the remainder of the regular season (10 games), plus the first round of the playoffs. It wasn't the dirtiest play he's ever made, but it was still absolutely inexcusable and I'm happy with him getting 14-17 games for his elbowing McDonagh; Cookie Monster has had it coming for a while. No statement from Mario Lemieux yet, which I'm sure is not a big surprise to anyone. The Wicked Good Sports Blog made a statement, though.

A few years too late.
Sucks for the Bruins. I’m sure they’d love to be able to get some compensation from Pittsburgh for Cooke’s deliberate intent to injure. If Savard can’t play, the B’s are on the hook to pay out that big contract.
Good thing Mario Lemieux asked the league to get tough on this kind of thing.
im waiting for lemieux to come out and make a statement about how cookes suspension is too long and doesnt fit the crime, just seems like lemieux is that type of guy…. however, even though it wasn’t for the hit on savard, and i came like a year too late, i am happy to see this scumbag finally get the punishment he deserves….. especially when his team is already very short on forewards, this puts them in an incredibly tough spot in the first round

He should get the McSorley treatment: either they ban him, or hit him in the head with a stick. Just sayin’.
Who cares what Mario says….their GM came out and made a full statement saying that stand behind the leagues decision 100% and agree that hits like that will not be tolerated. They actually told Cooke to go to the hearing on his own dime for the flight to Toronto from what I have heard.
As for the Savard salary issue I am pretty sure that if he retires due to health reasons that his salary does not count towards the cap because he was signed before he was 35 but I might be way off on this. I think its along the lines of when you sign a player that is 35 and over after his 35th birthday his contract regardless of if he retires or not is held against the cap but I think injury forced retirement is a bit different. I am not too sure so if someone knows better please let me know.
I think it has more to do with insurance...
If Savard retires due to injury, I believe the NHL insurance plan would kick in and he would receive something in the form of a payout for his remaining contract. Not sure how this would affect the Bs cap though. I want to say it doesn’t affect the cap, b/c it would be an off balance sheet payment from a 3rd party. More will come on this after the season and next year’s cap starts being discussed.
here is the only thing I could find relevant to insurance.

If he retires, it comes off the cap. Under 35 contract. Insurance payouts don’t count against the cap.
Considering he’s still got headaches and other symptoms, I’m not sure how that’ll go but I’d be surprised if he doesn’t at least try to come back.

I'd like to see him come back,
but only if he’s 100%. I like Savvy a lot, but when he’s not at the top of his game, he really makes a lot of costly mistakes.

I would love to have Savy back but only if hes able to be healthy. To be honest I think they should sit him for next season as well. Take a full calendar year off and see where he is at. He deserves it after all hes done for this team. Give him the time he needs.

I agree, and I think he should be back when he’s 100% and not before that.

Also, considering how one not-THAT-bad hit knocked him out for the season this year, I hope they’re extra careful.
Maybe he’ll suffer the same fate as Twellman, though, and the headaches will just never go away.
