What's that? You say a team that's gotten no respect is going to the championship? Don't worry, it happened last year, and it turned out well for the underdog faithful.
The Giants won with a mediocre offense, pretty good defense and probably the best 4-man rotation in the league. The B's have gotten here with a pretty good offense, outstanding defense, and the odds-on-favorite for the Vezina trophy, Timmy Thomas. You know the old adage, defense wins championships.
The Giants had a "tortured" (their term, not mine) fanbase. One that, despite a long and storied history, hadn't won the World Series in generations. A fanbase which had suffered disappointment and "almost-but-not-quite-good-enough" seasons like their 2002 WS loss to the Angels. The Bruins haven't won since the good ol' days of Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito despite devastating trips to the finals in the late 80s/very early 90s.
The Giants went in against a heavily favored team, a Texas Rangers team that had overpowered the Yankees and all the experts said would overpower the San Fran pitching staff. We go against the President Trophy winners in the Canucks who led the league in goals this season. Everyone seemed to forget that in the baseball playoffs, nothing's more important than a starting rotation, just like everyone is seeming to forget that the most important thing in the NHL playoffs is goaltending. I'll take Tim Thomas over Luongo, especially with Luongo's early playoff struggles.
Their Buster Posey is our Tyler Seguin. Their Cody Ross (clutchest player in the 20010 MLB playoffs) is our Nathan Horton (game-winning goals in both game 7's during these playoffs). Their starting rotation is our Tim Thomas. These are grinders. These are beasts. These guys are the ones who power through, who win games on sheer willpower, who grin bloody grins and knock out those poor souls unfortunate enough to hover too close to the crease. These are the guys you root for, you yell for, you cheer for, you lose sleep for, and you wait all season for. This is when we watch the favored juggernaut of the west face our guys. The Canucks may have beaten the Blackhawks. They may have beaten the Sharks. But they haven't beaten us.
It's our series. It's Boston's turn. Bring it on.
