My 2 cents.
There was a part of the interview where he was saying Timmy would have made saves he couldn’t. So, I wouldn’t say Lu was disrespecting Timmy. I won’t lie, that was a very confident Lu at the podium last night, even arrogant maybe, but I could understand where he was coming from.
This was the same guy who asked what he felt after Vancouver fans CHEERED for him getting pulled during Game 4. Here’s the link: http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/After-Game-4-Bruins-have-made-Roberto-Luongo-an?urn=nhl-wp6828
I just feel that the reporter was trolling for a response, and Lu gave him one.
Tim Thomas is probably going to be the Conn Smythe winner after this, he’s been the best player in the series, bar none. And I’m sure everyone who’s watched the series will realize this, and surely, so does Lu.
And before you comment on Luongo giving up 12 goals in 2 games. Please direct your attention to the ECF, where Timmy let in 20 goals total in Game 1,2,,4,6. Stats are so shallow when one chooses to be selective about them.

And just for context:
Thomas said Boston forwards weren’t challenging Luongo enough. Most media outlets readily printed this and that was it.
In Vancouver, when Lu effectively said something similar last season, the Canadian media would throw him under the bus for calling his own teammates out. This is the hypocrisy Luu is forced to deal with on a daily basis, so I won’t fault him at all for being a little arrogant with the press.

Timmy has been hearing this shit his whole career. I doubt he even cares at this point. Yes, he is an unconventional goaltender. We’ve established this. Honestly, the goal he let in last night was nothing compared to the game winners from game 1 and 2. THAT was being out of position. Last night’s goal would have been a tough save for any goalie that likes to stay square to the puck. And Timmy did have a grip on the puck, it looked like it just barely squeaked through under his armpit. I personally think the play of the 5 guys in front of Timmy on that play was far worse than his own.
they won on a lucky bounce
play might have been on purpose but the puck went right on lappys stick

Well Mr. Luongo
When you stayed in the paint you got embarrassed. It looked pretty hard for you to do well in the paint. You are right, Timmy can make saves that you can’t. No way LUUUU would have had that either.
tool
what a clown. He’s got like 5 inches on Thomas, and 2 less Vezinas. He ain’t got shit on Thomas, just drops to his knees and prays. Pathetic, hope the B’s can win a couple
Further more:
Timmy’s stats for this series: 1.20GAA .970SV%
Luongo: 2.80GAA .910SV%
Timmy has also faced 171 shots to Luongo’s 155(though to be fair, Luongo was pulled in game 4). Luongo has been playing okay, Timmy has been playing out of his mind. I’m not sure I’d be critiquing Timmy if I were Luongo. He is sharing the ice with a fellow goalie who is playing god like at the moment.
it’s easy to critique the other goalie when your team has the series lead. cocky, but easy.
that said, maybe all this media-led drama lights a fire under the Bruins’ asses and they come out on fire Monday.

This is the part of the narrative that baffles me. Facing elimination in game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals isn’t enough to light a fire under their asses? Or is it that it goes to 11?
I don't think this is being looked at in terms of team performance in the playoffs, but, rather, goalie performance.

Again, missing the point.
Thomas has all but sealed up the Vezina trophy as best goaltender, and most likely, will pick up the Conn Smythe trophy as well for player most valuable to their team (league-wide).
This is not a matter of opinion, but a matter of the stats (GAA, SV%, contributions to team standings)
These jabs are about those numbers, not about the cup. I wouldn’t read much into it. Regardless of who wins the cup, these trophies won’t chance unless Thomas allows tens of goals past, and decides to fight the entire Canucks line and have the team ejected from the series (read: not gonna happen).
Honestly, I’m kinda getting sick of all this bullshit where one side acts like they’re all innocent, and the other is evil.
Both sides have good fans, bot sides have asshats. No need to drop it to the lower of the two levels, ok?

oh, I agree.
It’s media-driven drama… it was a kind of cocky comment, but it’s clear that he was just answering a question – Lu knew his answer didn’t come out right (IMO), so he said something like, “he’d make some saves I couldn’t make” afterward.
That said, as a Bruins fan, it can be a little difficult not to take that as a shot at Timmy because the Canucks have been crying about him not playing in the paint all series.

Dude
No offense to you personally, and it is WAY more the media than the SBN site and commenters, but you guys “take offense” at everything.
No one has been crying, Jesus. Why do you have to couch it in those terms? They have said, that is how you beat a wandering goalie, but forcing him to overplay. Seeing as how most every winning goal against him has been when he was too far out and could not get back.
He said “he’d make some saves” afterwards not because of what you imagine about his answer, but because its the truth. Getting out like TT does, he might make some saves Lui would not.
It has been illuminating how the Boston media, and by extension, the fans sometimes, can find an insult in every little thing. Do you hear the Van media, or even the fans, being that upset that Haggerty went the Milbury route and called the Sedins “Hansel and Gretel”.
No, because we know its noise.
Nuck’s Misconduct Bishop, 1st United Church of Luongod. LUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU.........
really?
You really think nobody has been complaining about Thomas?
- I said it was media driven, not SBN.
- I have actually read some people complaining about the Thelma and Louise reference.
- I’m not taking offense to anything, but it did seem like a shot to me, albeit unintentional (it was the way he said it, and as I said, it seemed like his statements afterward were trying to downplay that). As I said before, it was a semi-loaded question, IMO.
- I’m not denying that the difference in styles allows them to make different saves/allow different goals.
While the quote below is not a response to a question regarding how he makes saves like they asked Luongo, Vigneault “talking to the league” about Timmy is definitely the same as “complaining about Thomas” to me, and to a lot of other people.
“Part of Thomas’s way of playing is playing out of the blue paint, initiating contact, roaming out there,” Alain Vigneault said. “He seems to think that if he’s out, he’s set, and makes the save, he can go directly back in his net without having anybody behind him. Well, that’s wrong. He’s got the wrong rule on that. If we’re behind him, then that’s our ice. We’re allowed to stay there. We’ve talked to the NHL about that. We’ve talked to the NHL about him initiating contact like he did on Hank. They’re aware of it. Hopefully they’re going to handle it.”

Wait a sec
We are critiquing voice inflections now? The way he said it? He is an athlete, not a politician. The narrative in the vast majority of the media has been that Thomas made a couple mistakes in the losses, but is the leading Conn Smythe, while Luongo HAD to have been insulting him, because did you hear how he said that!?
The Canucks did talk to the NHL for clarification, because they are playing th goalie in the NHL that comes out like that and initiates contact more than any other goalie. Its part of the swashbuckling style that makes him so good. But that is a statement of fact, not complaining. It worked too. He got an early one on Burrows in the series that was a penalty ( the foot ), and one that was not ( Chara hit him not Kes )…but there have been more than a few times he came out and hit a guy, or got the contact, and the refs shook their heads.
The thing on Hank, they had to ask again, because when is the last time you ever saw a goalie hit like that? Not saying it was right or wrong, good or bad, but again, just a coach at a media presser answering a question.
It is fascinating, isn’t it mahoney? The contrasting styles of reporting, all the way to contrasting styles all over the ice. I can honestly say that outside of the Chitown media, the Boston guys have succeeded better against the vancouver media at controlling the narrative.
That is fine. We’ll embrace the black hat thing. But that whole Timmy/ Lui insult thing was just an effective manufactured controversy. Thats it. Bravo to the Boston media on that one. Took a soft easy hanging curve over the plate and blasted it upper deck, thats for sure.

Why are you all butthurt about this? I said that I didn’t think he meant to be a dick about it, but that it just came out that way, and with all the trash that’s been going on, starting with the bite heard ‘round the world, so IMO both sides – fans and media included – are kind of sensitive about it now (and looking for a fight, as usual). I don’t know why you’re so upset because I personally think Vigneault is a whiner… all he had to do was consult his rulebook – it’s not vague at all.
Embrace the black hat thing? Are you serious? Have you been watching these games? The Bruins are by no means innocent, but the Canucks have been playing a Habs-type game – and you know what that means…

Butthurt ? Shoot no.
Shit, just having a convo. It is annoying that there has been all this hate. Not to make it an East/West thing, but there has been some of that too.
Again. Consult the rulebook yourself. The other guy is, as AV said ( he has been pretty open to questions this run, and I was only commenting on his doing what coaches do. In an interview later on, he had obviously gotten an answer that satisfied him, as he talked about the forwards being entitled to the space if they were there.
The bite thing is only a big deal for you guys still, but thats fine. I don’t much care about it, and its not as big a deal as you guys want to make it.
A Habs type game, I guess that is a compliment. I don’t know what that means, but suspect it is more a negative narrative.
Sorry you feel I am “butthurt” about anything. I am honestly fascinated at how anything the Canucks have done ( a perfect example a joke on the ice by Lappy being turned into WW 3, and Lucic and Recchi doing the same thing, but NOT as a joke, and they get a pass because “coach was mad at us” afterwards, ) , but when its the B’s, its boys being boys.
So, yeah, the Canucks have been portrayed as the villains. Glad you noticed it is not all a one way thing.
Nuck’s Misconduct Bishop, 1st United Church of Luongod. LUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU.........
The thing that I don’t think you guys get (and this is not meant as an insult to your intelligence) about Rechhi and Lucic doing it is that it was completely retaliatory. Would they have done it if Lapierre hadn’t? No, of course not. Also, had Patrick Marleau or Joe Pavelski bitten one of the Canucks and received zero discipline last series, I’m sure Canucks fans wouldn’t be thrilled with that.

Oh- and by a Habs-type game, I mean that it seems like they’re constantly throwing their heads back and pretending to be wounded, complaining about ice, goalie positioning, etc. Habs West. I get that their PP produces (or produced) and that they get a lot of their goals by sending the other team to the box, but diving in order to do so is cheap, and to me is a blemish on the face of the my favorite — and the greatest — sport there is. I’m not saying that no Bruin has ever taken a dive, I’m just saying that it seems the Canucks do it very frequently.

But I have been lurking. :]
I see no problem with the statement (Not just because I am a Canucks fan). Thomas even made contact with the puck, and it fell into the goal. Lu doesn’t aggressive challenge many shots, therefore he has a bit more time move to the other side that might allow him to make a positional save.
It’s simple as that, and it seems that A LOT of people are just being drama queens.
I don’t disagree, but I think he realized it kinda came out wrong and sort of tried to make his statement sound better by adding the “but he would make some saves I wouldn’t” – I don’t think it’s a big deal, the media is making a shitshow out of this series… I find it funny that some people can’t agree to disagree, or at least argue without seemingly getting their feelings hurt.

What I’m saying is that by creating a controversy out of nothing (let’s be honest here, both goalies have completely different styles, and that one guy could make stops on goals that the other can’t goes both ways), we’re doing nothing more than fanning the flames on a series that has already had enough back and forth anger and cheap shot BS for a season.

And I am saying, give me a break
He was aasked a question last night that was about the difficulty of playing that, as a goalie. he answered honestly, and the malice, and “fanning the flames”, was immediately done by the Eastern media. Immediately it was a shot. Taking a clip out of a comment to change the context is an old saw.
People, including you my dear friend Johnny, bought in because they already have a hate going, or it just makes the us vs them thing work better.
So, then when he explains it further, even complimenting the other guy about “pumping his tires”, the last line about not hearing it the other way is again, in the hallmarks of biased sports journalism, is again taken out of context for the desired effect ( like Adam above did almost exactly as I just said )
Its not surprising. Neither is the anger and cheap shots both ways. Its the cup Final. The refs have had 5 games to put a cap on it, but they let enough of that go that in Game 6, I don’t expect it to change.
I don’t hate you or any other guy here personally, and I have grown to accept this BS as part of the colour of the Final.

I didn’t “buy in.” I think this entire quote, the question, everything about this situation is stupid. The question itself should not have been asked, but Luongo answered honestly (which is what you should do, if you don’t decide to spin it like most would), and because of it, it’s being made a bigger deal than it is. Personally, I do not care if Luongo thinks he would have stopped it, nor do I care if Tuukka Rask thinks he would have stopped it. The fact is, Tim Thomas was the guy in net. He did not. Should he have? Probably, yes. It wasn’t the most difficult shot he’s faced in the playoffs.
Luongo complimenting Thomas is one of the few times this series that another player has talked about a guy on the other team in a manner that wasn’t a shot across the bow. It should be the real story here. Alas, it is not.

Can’t we just all get along? LOL
/pinky swear?

I’m sure we’ll get along fine after this series. + the obligatory week or so grace period while the winner celebrates and the loser recovers.

I have no idea what Lu was thinking....
…but by now you would think that the better answer would have been: “I don’t know; i wasn’t there. Why don’t you ask Timmy?”
Let’s throw the inverse question: Has Timmy ever talked Smack on Lu?

Not trying to start anything, just saying there's zero way to get out of a cagey question like that, other than batting it back.

Claude Julien responds to Luongo comment about Thomas:
"Let’s put it this way, I don’t think Timmy is going to make much of that comment," said Bruins coach Claude Julien. "I think you guys are making more out of it than Timmy will. Either way, his stats, you know, are proof itself. He’s given up six goals in five games. The guy that made the comment, I’m not quite sure how many he let in. I think you guys have a good idea, so I don’t think he’s going to lose sleep over that."

This was a nothing quote
In context, it makes sense, the way they (both goalies) handle positioning. They’re was no good answer he could have given.

You will have two days
To say that to people over and over again. That, or maybe Burrows can become the focus again, or Lapierre.
Kinda wish they would focus more on the compelling and fantastic hockey both fanbases have enjoyed, but that other stuff sells papers, and accumulates site hits.

Boston Fans you are bunch of MORONS
Listen to yourselves….calling Luongo arrogant! Talking about him like he’s a chump….12 goals…who cares the only number that matters right now is 4!! And The Canucks at 3 are 1 away from 4….can you count to 4? Hope so because counting to 4 is as close as you or your team of chumps will never be champs. Chumps last year when you choked against Philly, Chumps since the day Bobby Orr took off his skates, and CHUMPS once again this year. Imagine the pressure on those Chumps tomorrow…..one loss and its OVER! To lost on home ice to boot!! Can you dig it?? HAHAHAHAH Your team sucks ass, your stupidity and hostility towards Canucks fans in your city has brought karma down hard on you. Here in Vancouver we high five boston fans when you win…we’re good sports, We don’t threaten people, throw beer at them, spit on them, and verbally abuse children like you did to us in BOSTON. That pissed us off….that pissed our team off,….and that smug little Muppet you call a goalie….that flapping fish out of water….that flailing fucking idiot goalie of yours is going to take more fists than a hooker at an S&M convention! And we here in the prettiest, cleanest, wealthiest, greenest, nicest, coolest city in the world cant wait to watch you choke on it again. Good Luck LOSERS.

Ah look at that.
First post, and not a member of Nucks Misconduct.
So that’s three new accounts that have only come here to troll.
Funny you should mention hookers. CNBC said that Vancouver is one of the "least" expensive cities for prostitutes.
That means your so called wealthy city is saturated with hookers.

I guess I disagree that it was a loaded question. The question was asking how difficult is it to stop a shot that takes a bounce off the boards. Luongo could have simply said, yeah its a tough thing to be able to pick those bounces up off the boards, or whatever other generic response he could have came up with. However, he showed his confidence/cockyness. It wasn’t that bad of a response from Luongo, however, those who live in glass houses…
by BlueNGoldBomber on Jun 12, 2011 1:49 PM EDT reply actions
I also just read an article on ESPN, where Luongo is basically complaining that Timmy “isn’t saying enough nice things” about him.
by BlueNGoldBomber on Jun 12, 2011 2:31 PM EDT reply actions
WOW
The question was NOT what you just said above. It was asked in terms of “differing styles”. It was loaded, but who cares? He could have said no comment. He was open and honest instead, something the media asks for all the time.
Then, they twist it into something it is not. So sad the plyers, coach, and now you fans are jumping on this.
Because it is nothing. There was no insult, and the media is feeding you guys a line.
Though, by your parroting their line, it is obvious you are open to anything that is biased to your team being the “victim” right now. Hey, manufacturing some controversy worked for you before right? The players should know this is all nothing, which is why the “manufactured motivation” won’t amount to anything on Monday. They should be motivated by the Cup in the building ( I am sure our team is ), not a “he said/she said” thing that makes those concerned sound like they are still in the schoolyard passing notes…

I don’t have a problem with the response by Luongo. I only posted it because it has become a big storyline that everyone is talking about. I did post it without comment.

Sorry. Just annoyed at the narrative the past day or so.
Have embraced the Black Hat villain role anyhow. It will be nice to talk about the story on the ice and the supposed insults there than the other stuff, you know?
Nuck’s Misconduct Bishop, 1st United Church of Luongod. LUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU.........
you don't seem to have embraced it,
because you came across as rather snippy toward me, and I didn’t think I was being a jerk at all (for once). Maybe it’s the whole “no inflection in text” thing… although you don’t believe in inflection, anyway. ;)

So I guess I am confused how I am the asshole here… I never said that Luongo was far out of line. He was open and honest, you are right. However, take what Luongo said, and compare it to Timmy’s response. Neither one of them was obnoxiously out of line, however, Timmy was asked specifically about Luongos comments, and he just took the high road and said he wasn’t going to talk about it. I am sure that is something that comes with age and experience, and Luongo will get that with time, not a huge deal.
The bigger problem that I have is when you say this is the second time the Boston media has manufactured a controversy. I am assuming that you are talking about the hit on Horton. That my friend, is a far more classless comment than anything I have seen about this situation with Luongo.
by BlueNGoldBomber on Jun 12, 2011 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t think you’re an asshole. I can see both sides of this… the loaded question, the ability to not comment, and the response, backtracking included.
I agree- the Boston media has not “manufactured” a controversy (other than the Luongo thing — and the words did come out of his mouth) in this series.

Bruins win the next two games.
Canucks win tonight.
Talk is talk. You disagree with everything I say.
I say tonight is a sad night for Beantowners.you will say different. I am hoping for a good clean game. Game on Boston. Only 2 more hours to gametime. I think it’s time to go Bear hunting.

Hate is a strong word
No I don’t hate the Bruins. I even thought we would have had a different or easier time with Tampa bay than the Bruins before the SCF.
I guess you could sum it up as passion for the cup. I worked at the Coliseum and then at GM place for about 8 years. Many sad memories ,many good memories. Its all about the cup in Both cities. I am just a fan who loves hockey.
May the best team prevail?
