Poll: Bruins goalie masks
Since the departure of Andy Moog, the Bruins have gone through a *lot* of goalies -- I can easily come up with 20 off the top of my head -- and this means we've seen a lot of Bruins-themed masks. I thought it would be interesting to post a few images and a poll to see which ones people like best. So, here are a bunch of masks, in no particular order:
Andy Moog's Bruin mask- this is a classic, and could be seen in Dallas Stars colors after he packed up and left or the lone star state - even though that didn't make a ton of sense.

Jon Casey's blue bear mask 1993-94:
Vincent Riendeau, another five-minute Bruin, with a nagging hip flexor problem, I believe... never been a fan of the helmet-masks:
Jess Hackett's classic mask, with his team du jour:
Two of Timmy's, and I'm sure you know what the original looks like:

Blaine Lacher's mask may have been the only thing that got him ice time that sophomore season...
This is Scott Bailey's, and I don't know WTF it is, but its eyes creep me out:
Craig Billington didn't last long:
Jon Grahame had a decent mask -- too bad they had to score 7 goals if they wanted to win when he was in net:
Lord Byron had a great mask, awesome pads, etc (and I watched him figh Patrick Lalime, which was fun):
Hannu's time here was brief, but his mask was cool:
Steve Shields' Cheevers tribute was awesome:
Andrew Raycroft #1:
Raycroft numero dos:
Kay Whitmore had another one too, but I opted to post the cooler one:
Felix the Cat's mask in black 'n gold:
Tuukka time:
Cheevers: a classic.
Here's one of Bill Ranford's from the mid-90s:
I've excluded severeal - either because they were plain (see John Blue), or I couldn't find a picture of their mask from when they were playing for the Bruins (Jim Carey, etc.) - if you can find 'em, post 'em!

I opted for the "No! Another one!"
My favorite B’s mask was only worn for one game, 0 minutes played, but totally deserves mention:

An escalator can never break. It can only become stairs.
Ahhhh!!
I ran into that one and was gonna post it but figured nobody would remember it! Haha! You chose a good one!
Gotta say, I totally forgot about Hannu’s awesome mask until I googled him and ran into it.

a few thoughts….
a. I am a huge goalie gear geek, so this is the best picture collection ever.
Tuukka’s mask from the classic was a damn good one, but not best ever. The anti-Yankees message gets to us, but Tuukka had nothing to do with it. Love the kid, but not his idea.c. Timmy’s WC mask at least needed to be posted or mentioned. Classy enough move to deserve recognition.
d. My vote goes to Blaine Lacher’s mask, but only because when he wore that mask, I was 10, and it is what made me start to love mask art.

Correct!
I totally forgot about the Fred Cusick tribute mask! Had I put it in the original post, I’d vote for that as the best one (because I LOVE Fred ‘n Derek!) – but I went with Lord Byron even though, like you, Blaine Lacher’s mask made me love mask art as well – I was 13 his rookie year.

P.S. It’s so hard to remember all these masks, especially with the revolving goalie door we had for about a decade. Ugh! Forgive me if I’ve forgotten your personal favorite!

no problem…. totally understandable that with the 305k goalies or so we have had over the last 20 years, and like 2-3 masks per, that one or two might slip through the cracks. still a hell of a fun read/discussion…. well done

another one
but u have it up there. liked byron and tuukkas but timmys non white witht he hunter and beware on the back was my fav in the last 20 years.
You know how I said my profile pic would always be an animal? well, Chara's a BEAST!
Great post. I always thought hannu’s mask was one of my favorites, but i think now it’s probably timmy’s all-white. Love how subtle it is.

More than just the visual design of his mask, I’m fascinated by the unorthodox vertical bars:
From Sports Illustrated a while back
While most goalies wear cat-eye masks, with protective bars that are horizontal above the eyes and follow facial contours down the cheeks, Thomas feels those bars obstruct both the highest and lowest fields of his vision. Instead, his mask has vertical, jail-style bars that are as widely spaced and thin as possible. “I read an article that the human eye can block those out easier,” he says.
Makes sense to me. To dork out for a sec, think about watching a movie in the theater. You’re watching a flickering sequence of still images at 24 frames per second. But it appears to be a continuous image because the mind is filling in the gaps between each frame. The same thing is happening with the bars on Timmy’s mask – he’s got uniform frames breaking up his field of vision, which the brain can more easily fill in than it could more random shapes. Cat eye bars would be like playing a film at irregular frame-rates, creating perceptibly blank gaps between images.
I had this hunch at the start of the season that he went with a white out color scheme so light would better reflect off his mask giving him some kind of visual edge. Not sure if that’s possible but it’s a thought I had.
Possible, dunno. I’d think the bar color and material would matter than the mask itself. I’ve always thought metallic bars are crazy, ala Rask’s above. That’s gotta create weird distracting glint
I know some goalies like white pads because its harder for shooters to see the holes, but not sure the same logic applies to the mask.
Thanks, peeps.
There were a couple I couldn’t find pictures of and I was getting a little frustrated. The more I look at the pictures, the less I know which is my favorite.
Have we figured out WTF is on Scott Bailey’s mask? It scares me!
Also, I couldn’t find a picture of Jim Carey’s Bruins mask.
Kick his ass, Seabass!
This is the second of Rob Tallas’ masks I could find, but after scouring the depths of the interwebs, I couldn’t find a closeup:

HA! Incidentally, in my search for a Tallas closeup, I found Matt DelGiudice (lol?) – who’s next, Norm Foster?

Kick his ass, Seabass!

the khl masks were kind of hit or miss… however, nothing i have ever seen have encompassed the essence of being a goalie like the one at number 1. nothing says im a professional goaltender like fuzzy little kittens

i love that one, especially the “hang in there” on the side. I wonder if the other side expresses his distaste for mondays

the kitten totally cracks me up… like, I can see getting a big, scary lion or tiger or leopard or something on your mask if your nickname is ‘the cat’ – but that is CLEARLY a domestic tabbycat.

Fun Mahoney!
I’m a sucker for tributes but I think Raycrofts Zakim bridge/ Garden Mask is the best Boston one. 2nd would be Shields Cheevers tribute. If Timmay’s Cusick tribute was in your original list I might have to go for that, because I was almost ready to go for anything that was Timmy because, well, he’s Timmy and he’s a champion!

Funny! I totally forgot about Timmy’s Cusick one til someone reminded me – it’s sooo awesome and is my favorite, the more I think about it – I feel old saying it, but I can hear his “Neely to Oates, Oates to Neely, he shoots, he SCORES! Cam Neely!” – like it was yesterday!

dont forget rask's
You know how I said my profile pic would always be an animal? well, Chara's a BEAST!
heres something i forgot all about… For 2-3 games this year, Tuukka had a new mask made. except he played like shit for those 2-3 games, so he went back to his old mask (silly goalies and their superstitions)…. here is both sides of that mask.
