Idiotic Responses to News of Crosby's Health
I've heard a few B's fans recently all but celebrating the news that Sid Crosby still isn't 100%, may not be ready for camp, etc. When I asked why, they all voiced their opinion that it 'couldn't happen to a better guy' or some ridiculousness like that.
Is that really what we Bruins fans have come to? One would think that we, of all fans, know what it means to have a career interrupted (at best) like that, how unfair to everyone that this shit happens. And thinking bigger picture, is the NHL as a whole not infinitely better with Crosby at the top of his game? And yes, I know it's likely not a Boston-exclusive thing, this frame of mind, just talking about what I've heard.

I’ll not lie.. a small part of me smiled over this when it first happened as some sort of karmic revenge for having Cooke on his team. I knew it was wrong though it didn’t stop that feeling from popping up occasionally.
That has now gone away though. I have a little less sympathy for this situation than others (like Savard or Bergy) because the concussion was the result of accidental contact… neither Steckel nor Hedman intended to ring his bell. Maybe its just me but I treat incidental and intentional injuries differently… one is just bad luck while the other is BS.

He shouldn’t have been in the game where hedman drilled him

I agree that people asre making Steckel and Hedman look like headhunters just because this is Sidney Crosby (who shouldn’t have been playing in the Hedman game to begin with), but to me an injury and a star player being out of the game is a shame regardless of whether the injury was intentional.
Of course, I do decrease my sympathy level just because Cookie is on his team.
Either way, I want Crosby to come back because he’s good for the game and for the league.

Where did you see that?
Shouldn’t you be asking them about it?

I have to disagree. I hate everything about Crosby. When he came into the league so came the bandwagon fans. I know when it comes to him there is no neutral opinion. Am I glad it happened to him? No but in my opinion the league is better of with him hurt
hahahahaha

I don’t know if its better off without him…
I will say I think this is a valuable lesson for the league in regards to its marketing… it is NEVER wise to focus all your efforts on a few individuals for just this reason. Were he to retire and Ovechkin leave to play in Sochi ’14 then the league would be proper fucked. And it would be their own fault.

Agreed, they can’t put their eggs in one (or two) basket(s). They need to market other guys, get them into commercials, etc.

Even that I don’t like… market the TEAMS. Hockey is the ultimate team sport… far more so than the other three ‘American’ sports. Use that to your advantage and make it a focal point.
Yes, show the stars as well because you have to but stress the teams just as much.

Agreed – I’d like them to market the players AND the teams. Totally on board with you on the team aspect, though – but unfortunately to make more cha-ching, they need to suck in some fans from other sports, and those people like superstars, y’know? (disclaimer: not asking for a lebron situation or anything remotely close)

Looks like we are not alone… this is from Steven Ovadia via PuckDaddy:
as Sid goes, so goes the NHL mindset: "The lesson of Winnipeg and the lesson of Crosby’s concussion are the same one: if the NHL is going to remain a strong sports league, it needs fans to embrace teams and not a core group of league-deemed important players

It’s good to have superstars who are hilariously dominant like Crosby was before he went down last year.

How could the league be better off with him hurt? The league needs any fans it can get, bandwagon or otherwise.
I’m a die-hard and have been as far back as I can remember. I loathe bandwagon fans because they haven’t suufered like we have — they haven’t earned the pure ecstasy that the Bruins winning a Cup brings – but I know that the team and the league both need the exposure, just like the league needs Sidney Crosby.
I see no reason to hate him. I could understand being tired of hearing about him, but hating him and hoping he is hurt/retired is terrible. Grow up. He’s a great player with great skills who happens to be on a team other than one you support. Don’t get me wrong, I like Ovie better than Sid the Kid, but that doesn’t mean I was Crosby to be injured, hit by a bus, trampled by a herd of wildebeests, or anything like that.

Hate the media focus on him and the constant praise they heap on him… hate the focus the NHL pours down on him… don’t hate the man. There is a significant difference there.
