Marc Savard not expected to play in 2011-2012, career in doubt.
It seems more like confirming what we all knew than actual news, but it doesn't mean it's any easier to take. Savvy is one of the key factor's in the Bruins' post-lockout resurgeance, and it's still strange to not see #91 out on the ice. Hopefully better days - and recovery - are ahead.

Damn that’s really too bad on two counts.
First, no Savard? Terrible news, as he’s a fantastic player when healthy.
Second, LTIR? That means we can go at most 4 mill over the Cap, if the Bruins hit the limit every day. Unfortunately, that space can’t be banked. Banking space is useful as it turns $1 mill in extra space on opening day into roughly $4 mil by the deadline as teams only take the pro-rated contract remainder, not the while year cost.

Not really a big deal though… even with Savard’s 4M counting against the cap the Bruins have 7.6M of space. Should have plenty come trade deadline.

That’s true, which is surprisng. Boston’s not a small market, so I wonder what they’re waiting on to spend that. Marchand will take up some space, but not all.

Why spend money when you don’t need to? Their team is pretty well set and any openings can be filled with kids.
Add in
1 – the ridiculous costs and length handed out this past FA frenzy
2 – the garbage that is left for cheap
3 – the CBA uncertainty and
4 – the number of expiring contracts (Krejci, Rask, Kelly, Peverley, Campbell, Boychuk, Corvo)
I am THRILLED they have been smart about this.

All great points! And I’m curious to see what happens with the expiring contracts, but they have planned well!

Well they already locked down McQuaid which is huge.
Boychuk, Corvo, Peverley and Kelly are all playing for their next contract… could see them all stay or all leave depending on performance this season. Especially true for Boychuk given his unsteady career thus far.
Campbell and Thornton are tough calls based on their roles on the team. Hard to justify spending much on 4th liners, regardless of their importance to the team.
Rask and Krejci are obviously key re-signs and I expect Chia to focus on them as soon as Brad is locked up. Rask is obviously the trickier situation.
