Free-for-all Friday: Open Thread

Because let's face it, you're not actually doing anything at work right now. So this is a new feature! Every Friday afternoon we'll feature something amusing or have some sort of nonsensical contest...basically a place to spout nonsense, photoshops, and what-have-you at each other.

So here is our first edition of Free-for-all-Friday. And, not that we need to rehash vancouver-boston nonsense anymore, but Pass It To Bulis had this hilarious comic up today which pretty accurately describes, well, everything:

This is your Friday afternoon open thread. AND, GO.

Happy Friday.

Applied for an internship with the Sox. Waiting for news!

Was it just me or was last night’s game just not all that intense? Felt like playing a good non-rival team.

Habs..

.. are in complete disarray. Ain’t it purdy???

Yep. Habs are a trainwreck. I know I could be alone here, but I usually like for them to be competitive because the rivalry’s more fun that way.

Kick his ass, Seabass!

by phonymahoney on Jan 13, 2012 7:05 PM EST up reply actions

Part of me..

loves the fact that the team is so f’d up, but the other part of me misses the rivalry. I feel bad for the players because Mgt is has made one bad decision after another. They do, however, deserve everything they foist upon themselves.

At least we still have the Nucks to hate!

by Federko on Jan 13, 2012 7:39 PM EST up reply actions

I do believe that if Subban were in the black and gold and Marchand in le bleu blanc et rouge, the defenses for these players would be exactly the same, in that we’d love Subban and hate Marchand and say “you’d love him on your team”. I know the comic is about Burrows, but Subban’s play last night is more pressing on my mind. I do like him as a player, but his antics (and his jersey) make him impossible to defend.
I’m pretty sure Subban would answer the bell in that case, too. The jersey (or threatening teammates) cures all!

Is any 4-sport Boston fans going to be watching the third period of the B’s-Whalercanes game Saturday? I’ll be honest: I probably won’t be.

Five teams have given up 100 goals or less.
5. 100 – Los Angeles
4. 94 – San Jose
3. 92 – St. Louis
2. 86 – NY Rangers
1. 77 – Boston
Only one of those five have scored more than 120 goals, and that’s Boston with 148 (#1 in both categories!)

I made risotto last night.

That’s all I got.

I can't seriously be asked to summarize my sports fandom in a short blurb for all to see, can I?

Syracuse plays at 6. Bruins play at 7. Pats at 8. I’ll be watching all three. Thanks, TVs.

Also, I’m working on a banger of a post for tomorrow. /tease

by Ryan Durling on Jan 13, 2012 4:54 PM EST up reply actions

Subban is too far gone to reprogram. He’s a Hab for life, like Mike Ribeiro.

Ribeiro is way beyond reproach. Always a Hab.

Still exciting for the players, but I can’t help but think Obama isn’t much of a hockey fan.

omg for anyone from the midwest...Bo Pelini ...

…showed up @ my school today for no appearant reason other than to watch my gym class run. No, actually he was secretly scouting for football playahs, since that is what all but four of the kids in my class are. So he just stood in the corner and watched us run various things for an hour. It was so awkward but also fantastically hilarious.

I hate football, college and pro alike. I love baseball but am kind of tired of it because the Sox are shoved down our throats, y’know? Hockey is #1 for me.

unlike everyone else in this damn state...

…i am not having a loooove affair with football, but it’s something you just kind of learn to accept. you don’t have to like it a whole lot, but you DO have to live with it. Hockey is my #1 too and i <3 my Sox but my father has put our house on a “Sox Ban” until they make the playoffs again. Needless to say, he was fuckin’ pissed at their epic collapse this past fall.

Carry On.

Gonna sound weird, but I’m glad thr Sox imploded because maybe some of the bandwagoners will go away. Beisdes, I have a harder time liking them when they throw money at everyone like the Yankees.

Had to do ACTUAL WORK today

… and now I have to catch up in all the SCOC chicanery!

Also… Watching Bruins tomorrow at 7 and only checking in on the Pats during commercials until the Bs are finished down in Whalercaneville.

Tim Thomas's outstanding play in goal....and overall Bruins play of late....

I have been following the Bruins since 1967 or so, and remember the first round of expansion of the NHL that brought us the California Golden Seals (you could look it up, Casey)…I do not ever remember a Bruins goaltender playing as well as has Tim Thomas during the past 12 months or so…Is this the best Bruins team of my lifetime?

Gee, that’s tasty Kool-aid….gimme some more of that….

"Finally it was over, and Orr, still wearing the jersey, went over to shake hands with the present Bruins, hugging old teammates Gary Doak and Gerry Cheevers. Then he went through the gate and out of the arena, this artist whose artistry was halted suddenly and too soon.

"Don Cherry has a video tape of a Channel 38 production of Orr's greatest moments, with Barbara Streisand's 'The Way We Were' in the background. 'I have a few beers at home,' he said, 'and I go down and put the tape on and watch. And when she sings that phrase 'the way we were' and the young Bobby is doing the things on the ice that he could do, I just sit there and cry. Every time I cry.'

"Cherry says he was criticized when he first became coach of the Bruins because he seemed in awe of Bobby Orr.

" 'Of course I was. So was everyone who ever played with him or against him.'

"So were we all."

Lovin’ the black and gold kool-aid.

My mother constantly says how he’s better than Cheevers, but his style makes her nervous just like Cheese did. She can barely watch Timmy!

Sadness

Too far away. If not it would be fun to meet the folks who post all the lovely, entertaining and incormative comments I read. Sometimes I even attempt an amusing reply. (I tend to succeed with the reply part but not the comedy.)

I may or may not be there… I have a stupid birthday party at 3, and it’s for my niece, so I don’t think I can bail in good conscience… and I can’t bear to be travelling while the game is on because GOD FORBID I MISS IT(!)… maybe I’ll see you guys, maybe I won’t – leaning toward not going, though, which is lame because I had a good time at the last one.

Montreal's collapse....a timeline

Would anyone care to put together a brief timeline of montreal’s collapse?

How far back can it be traced?

I say back to when they made Pierre turgeon captain? Or maybe when Koivu left?

Note that the wiki page on them is already updated to reflect the dismissal of Camillieri.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montreal_Canadiens

Oh, and little known fact…they have team motto!

To you from failing hands we throw the torch. Be yours to hold it high.

The Bruins don’t have a motto, just a guy in a bear suit. It’s all that’s needed I guess.
