The Noon Number: Winter Classic Style
With the Bruins off until Thursday and the NHL's marquee Winter Classic game taking place today, here's an outdoor-flavored noon number:
3 - The number of consecutive Stanley Cup winners that have participated in the Winter Classic the season prior to winning the Cup - Boston in 2011, Chicago in 2010 and Detroit in 2009.
If tradition holds, either the Pittsburgh Penguins or the Washington Capitals should be claiming the Cup in 2012, and the Rangers or Flyers have early dibs on the hardware in 2013.

Detroit in 2009?
Your stat is close, but it’s not just teams that participated in the Winter Classic in the year prior, but the team who won the classic has won the cup the following year.
First Winter Classic 2008 (Buff vs Pitt) – Pens won classic and won cup in 09
2009 Classic (Det vs. Chicago) – Chicago won classic and won cup in 2010
2010 Boston vs Philly – We all know how this ended.
But if tradition holds true, Washington should be a favorite to win it this year ala Classic winners years before.
*Sorry thought Chicago won it in 2009, but I guess I was wrong. So much for my argument about winning the classic then winning the cup.

Also random but last season was the first time that a WC participant didn’t make the SCF that same year.
’08 Pitt did
’09 Detroit did
’10 Philly did
All three lost of course.
