HItting The Links: Draft Day Edition
Today's the day - the most overhyped, ridiculous popularity contest in the NHL gets underway with the NHL All-Star Draft. I can't embed this video, but here's hoping the Canadian TV show This Hour Has 22 Minutes gets a hold of some all-stars again this year. Hilarious. Any time Zdeno Chara gets to talk about eating babies, you know he's got to be having a good day.
After the links, Montreal won a game in ridiculous fashion last night; Grantland talks Zdeno Chara; and who will be in Phil Kessel's shoes this year?
Bruins News:
- The Bruins seem to have good position at the All-Star Break, with just a few issues to correct going forward. [ESPN]
- Specifically, they need to fix the defense. [Mass Live]
- Mark Recchi is going to coach Team Orr in the CHL prospects game! [Buzzing the Net]
- Remember that Lightning mascot that silly stringed a Bruins fan? Fired. Ba-zing! [Tampa Bay]
- Do you live in/near Lowell? Go meet some Bruins at a UML game. Just go. [Lowell]
- Ray Bourque and some other Bruins will be playing in the Oldtimer Hockey Challenge in Kingston this week. [Kingston]
- Ladies, want a bag made out of newspapers from the Bruins championship? Look no further. [Globe]
- "Can Zdeno Chara just start reciting lines from Rocky IV?" [Grantland]
NHL News:
- Oh look, a fantasy draft before tonight's fantasy draft. [PHT]
- Matt Hendricks' ear almost fell off the other day. [Dump N' Chase]
- Mike Babcock needs a drink after the Red Wings loss last night. They could have solidified their position in the hard-fought Central division with a win over the lowly Canadiens. Whoops. [PHT]
- John-Michael Liles signed an extension with the Maple Leafs yesterday. [The Star]
- Nicklas Lidstrom had the flu last night, ending his streak of NHL games played at 213. [ESPN]

Thanks guys! I’m a fan of the Bruins, but really I’m a fan of hockey, and I can’t stand seeing teams like Montreal and Vancouver take hockey back to the dark ages with their instigating and turtling.

Tim Thomas is an amazing guy.
I can’t believe people blasted him in the papers. I can’t believe people blasted him on here. I can’t believe people say “public figures should stfu about their opinions”. To me this translates to “athletes are racehorses. They should run the field, sweat, break records, take home a medal and shut up.”
Shut up the activism-minded athletes in Beijing. Shut up athletes who have an opinion on anything at all.
He said this wasn’t about parties so it’s not dem vs rep. It’s not about race either. God, I can’t believe the hate this amazing goaltender/American is getting over a personal choice he made.
It takes guts to speak up, okay? And to not become a mouthpiece for pure corporate interests 100% of the time.
Sorry, is this spamming? I just can’t get over it.
By the way I’m a sharks fan. I just have a cutout quote from Thomas from an old Sports Illustrated or ESPN magazine on my bedroom wall. It irks me and I’m not even a fan of your team.

"When I knew... Age didn't matter" by Tim Thomas
In 2005 I signed with Boston, but they sent me to the AHL. At that point I’d played only four NHL games—in 2003. I didn’t get called up until January. I was driving to Boston when I found out I was going to start. I heard “Lose yourself” by Eminem on the radio, and it hit me: I was 31, and this was my once chance. I mean, I was only there because of injuries. I was so late that I ran to the locker room. It’s probably good that I didn’t have time to think, because I ended up playing well. We lost in a shootout, but I made a save on Mike Modano that stands out. He was breaking through the slot, and I thought he’d go high. Instead, his shot went along the ice, and my pad landed on the puck. I got lucky. After the game, my wife said “Wow, I didn’t know you could do that”.
My age is nothing. I just needed the opportunity. Even when I started to succeed, people said I wouldn’t last. It’s a driving force to this day.

Just as he has a right to speak out, we – fans and media both – have every right to criticize him for taking national attention away from team accomplishments, casting a negative light on the game to non-fans, for unnecessarily politicizing an apolitical honor and (for some of us anyway, to speak for myself) for having a worldview informed by Glenn Beck.
Screw it, I’ll own up to it: I’m miffed he’s a right winger – in contrast to my own leaning – and that my fandom of him now carries the connotation of support of his positions.

I’m with you all the way.
On top of that, I don’t know how he could say it’s not about politics and then go on about the size and reach of the federal government… it is clearly about politics.
Kick his ass, Seabass!
by phonymahoney on Jan 26, 2012 12:19 PM EST up reply actions
As a fellow right winger...
Thomas says “it’s not a politics”.. b/c it isn’t about the politics we have come to accept over the past 3 decades involving bickering between parties. When you think of politics, you think of the Donkey and the Elephant fighting over stuff, refusing to agree with each other. The modern media is as much to blame for this visual as is the deplorable behaviors of our elected officials.
Tim’s stand (whether you agree with it or not) is about the size and scope of our government, and how that infringes on the liberties of the people. In this light, Thomas is not taking a stand against Obama, Democrats, health care legislation, etc… it is a stand against all that government has come to encompass in the 21st century. Pat-downs at the airport, seatbelt laws, $5/pack cigarette taxes, golden parachutes for gov’t employees, etc…
As a Bs fan, I wish he has gone to show solidarity with the team, but this is the US and he has the right to free speech and the right to abstain… he exercised his right… drop it!
For Horton!

I was disappointed when he didn’t show up and I expressed that in the other thread. But on reflection I realize that it was my own selfish desire to relive the championship celebration (which must include the MVP) that led to that disappointment.
I can say with high confidence that his teammates don’t care that he didn’t go, that Obama doesn’t care that he didn’t go, and Thomas doesn’t care what anyone else thinks of his politics. So what sense does it make for me to care any more?
I’m not going to hold it against him. He’s certainly not the first right-winger I’ve cheered for. I’m never going to vote for him, but I’m still going to lose my mind every time he makes an impossible save.
Best case scenario: his anger at the controversy recharges his super powers again.

It’s not about speaking out for me. I may not agree with him politically, but I support his right to hold his own beliefs. I also support his right to decline the invite to the White House, but that doesn’t mean I have to like or agree with it. I think he made it a Tim Thomas event rather than a Boston Bruins event. I think he put himself before the team.
That said, I love Timmy, I’m just disappointed. Yeah, he’s got guts – I don’t think anyone can disagree with that – but we are within our rights to not agree with his choice.
