Hitting the Links: Recovery/Weekend Edition
Though the Bruins lost, I thought yesterday's game was one of the best I've seen in a while. The intensity level was up there with a Montreal game, and adding in the talent of the two teams it was really an amazing game. I think the NHL messed up by not having that game on NBC Sports, if they could have done that.
Losing that game sucked, but in hindsight it really only is one game out of 82. If the Bruins see the Canucks again this season, I think we'll all be really, really happy about it. And hey, if that does happen, Luongo gets to fall apart again at the Garden. I still don't get the decision not to play him yesterday.
After the jump, reactions to yesterday's game, Danny Briere goes into "Rocky" mode, and Montreal keeps looking stupid.

Julien has it right on the Marchand incident.
MARCHAND HAD THE PUCK. He was trying to avoid letting Salo staple him to the boards. If Salo had the puck and Marchand lowbridged him, I’d be more inclined to agree with the call.
Possession of the puck doesn’t somehow immunize you from making illegal or dirty plays.

Love how Vigneault and Gillis are foaming at the mouth about Marchand’s hit. If you go to that You Tube link, there are SEVERAL clips of Ballard putting hip checks towards the "knee area’. Get your own house in order boys.

Well if that’s not the resolution of the entire day for both teams, I don’t know what is. Well said.

It is for that very reason I would prefer to see Marchand suspended. I have clamored for suspensions for similar low hits in the past (the Scuderi hit last year comes to mind) so I would be duplicitous if I stood by and defended such an act from my own team.

How well would this have fared as a national game?
A 4 pm or 7 pm national start time, and you’re fighting NFL playoffs.
I’m honestly suprized the NHL planned this game on such a day.
Even though I don’t think the Bruins match up with them as well, I’d much rather see a Bruins Stanley Cup Finals against Detroit, San Jose, or Chicago than Vancouver. This team brings too much nonsense with it. Don’t like the way they play hockey at all. Boston against any of the other Western contenders would be just as intense, and probably more entertaining.
Agreed...
Can not stand the Canucks…Which is interesting, prior to the finals last year, I had no animosity towards this team, definitely can not say that now…
First and Foremost....
I would like to apoligize to everyone on this board for my foul language last night. You are correct, Phoneymahoney, we don’t do this on the board here. I got rather annoyed by some trolls that were on this board last night and they got the better of me. I would like to apologize for my lack of composure and my use of language to everyone on this board. I am sincerely sorry…
it’s all good, 2 minutes in the box, you feel shame, then you get free. Happens to the best of us.
And I don’t think too many here have issue with language in general, that game thread is mostly f bombs.
maybe I’m just a prick but I was hoping for salo solo what ever the kids name was lost his other nut , throwing a hissy fit throwing his stick would have laughed if it went in the stands , Fuck em they did what they did got us all hot and bothered guess what that normally leads to us going on even more of a tear then we all ready are,
dirty play you say , I say good some teams need to be put in there place and I bet 28 other teams all agree the nucks are nothing but a wana be Montreal , at least the habs will for the most part fight back

Salo separated his shoulder from that hit. He was legitimately injured, not just acting or hamming it up for the call.

I am on the fence about the Marchand/Salo incident...
Salo came in to hit Marchand, and Marchand went low on him. I get it, and Salo was injured and therefore, the penalty became a major and a game misconduct. I get that too…but Marchand is a small guy, and I don’t feel he should be punished for being small. Hamhuis last year did almost the same thing to Lucic in the Stanley Cup final, only difference is Looch was not hurt and Hamhuis took the brunt of the hit and was hurt.
If the NHL does not suspend Marchand, then other teams will accuse us of favoritism and it should not be that way. Suspensions should be dealt on an individual/play basis, not on who they play for. I think there has been an increase of “well, they play for such and such, so they will not get disceplined”..
Was what Marchand did dirty? I don’t know, he went low to avoid a check, something that has happened with other players before on other teams. Should the injury dictate whether there is a suspension/fine? No, but we benefitted from the Rome/Horton incident. I still agree that Rome should have been suspended for his hit on Horton, so I guess missing Marchand for a few would not be tough, at least it would give either Hamill/Caron a chance to play…
I don’t know, I think that teams try to manipulate the NHL’s discipline ruling, so I don’t know…I said much without really saying anything at all…sorry… :(
If Marchand’s suspended I imagine they just put Pouliot in his place. He played well there the other night.
A lot of people are saying Marchand is short
However, his listed height is 5’9", and Salo’s listed height is 6’3". Let’s assume that Marchand’s listed height is grossly exaggerated, and he is really 5’6".
But now look at this (blurry) image. Granted, it’s a still from a video, but it appears to be at the point of contact.
http://i.imgur.com/JGkdL.jpg
Roughly speaking, Marchand’s head/shoulders are around the area of Salo’s upper knee/lower thigh. That’s way too far to bend down to throw a hip check. The reason he gets so low is probably because
A) Marchand’s legs are at an angle to the surface of the ice. Salo is upright.
B) Marchand’s knees are bent, with his butt sticking out, further lowering his body to the ground.
If you get into that position and hit someone, the only result is that you’re going to flip them fall head over heels. No NHLer has a hip that low to hit.
So what I guess I’m saying is, is that his height has nothing to do with this. If he had thrown a normal hip check, it probably would have hit Salo in the upper thigh. That is a super low stance he was in – short or not.
So instead of the upper thigh, it hit him in the lower-to-mid thigh… still not targeting the knee IMO
Kick his ass, Seabass!
And clipping, by definition, is hitting at or below the knee.
Slightly above the knee may be a dirty hit but it is not illegal.

Right. That’s what I’m saying: to me, it looked as if it were above the knee. Any lower and yes, it absolutely is clipping.
If he is suspended, I’m not going to be upset by it; he needs to learn that playing on the edge is good, but he needs to be smarter about it… but, I don’t necessarily think he should be suspended.
Kick his ass, Seabass!
by phonymahoney on Jan 8, 2012 11:23 PM EST up reply actions
Definitely needs a lesson. No denying that.
Even if it was above the knee I still don’t like that hit in that circumstance. Its one I would like to see done away with given the inherent danger of it. A hip check is okay but it has to be at the hip and come more laterally which is less dangerous as I see it. Submarining someone (even by hitting them mid-thigh) is just too dangerous.
by BobbyOrrsBastard on Jan 8, 2012 11:27 PM EST up reply actions
I don’t disagree that it’s shitty/dirty/dangerous, however, if it ain’t clipping, then it ain’t clipping. I do see it as more of a defensive move gone awry than a blatant attempt to be dirty, but he still needs to learn not to do that because somebody’s gonna break their neck one of these days. IMO, doing it to (insert first name here, I think Henrik) Sedin in the Finals was fine and dandy because Sedin was making a run at him after the whistle (sometimes you have to fight dirty with dirty), but this one on Salo is definitely more questionable.
That said, I think most people are forgetting – presumably because we have slow motion and can watch the reply 500 times – that this happened in a split second… it’s not like Brad Marchand got together with Lee Harvey Oswald, Sirhan Sirhan, and John Wilkes Booth in his basement and planned this evil deed out step by step. Furthermore, he didn’t swing his stick and nail Salo in the teeth; he didn’t spear anyone in the throat, nor did he jump off the bench to join a fight, beat anyone with their own shoe, or throw a nasty elbow… it looked to me as if he were trying to avoid getting nailed by a dude who’s got at least 6 inches on him, and it went badly (maybe it went how he hoped it would, maybe it didn’t, but none of us know his intent, nor will we). But regardless of intent, I think maybe he should probably sit a game or two (maybe. I’m not gung-ho here) just so the league looks and feels like they’re trying to do something about the safety of the game, and to quell al the retarded talk of the so-called “Bruins bias”… if there were indeed such a thing, Lucic wouldn’t have been tossed only a few minutes in just for being Lucic.

If they blew the whistle every time the Nucks did something
unsportsmanlike, it would take 8 hours to finish a game.
Disagree because then Thomas doing that a month or two back is a penalty and that’s just lame.

Means any suspension is capped at 5.
Think a phone hearing is required after a game misconduct.

It is, but doesn’t guarantee a suspension….hadn’t heard it was a phone hearing, that’s good at least.

A phone hearing can’t lead to suspension greater than 5 games by the CBA (I believe)
I know its a set rule, just don’t know where it is spelled out. If they are considering suspending him for more than 5 games than they have to set up an in-person meeting to discuss the matter.

The CBA also says you can’t use prior history past 18 months but they ignore that part too

Couldn’t say on that. I have read as much but never seen it used by the LEAGUE in a decision. Have seen it mentioned by media of course but thats another matter.
by BobbyOrrsBastard on Jan 9, 2012 10:25 AM EST up reply actions
As deep as the Bruins are up front, a suspension isn’t the worst thing in the world if Marchand continues to learn which lines you shouldn’t cross. I don’t think it was a play that needed to be made, it resulted in an injury, and put the Bruins shorthanded for 5 minutes against an elite power play when they were already short a guy. That’s the type of play you don’t want in any game, but especially not in a playoff game down the road.
More short term playing time for Hamil and Pouliot isn’t necessarily a terrible thing.
Hope Salo is okay.
Agreed on all fronts.
Given how well Pouliot played on the Bergy line in his stead its hard to fret too much over this.

Does anyone else agree with me that Horton played one of his best games a Bruin yesterday…He was everywhere…keeping plays alive, hitting everything that moved, he was playing like a man possessed. He had a ton of takeaways, maintained possession of the puck, and created tons of plays seemingly out of nowhere. It may not have reflected on the score sheet, but he played a hell of a game
by Dangles-McDonnybrook on Jan 8, 2012 3:24 PM EST reply actions
I think maybe Horton is coming back. I think he has spent most of the season looking a little lost and always a little behind on the play. The last few games he seems to be keeping up with the play.
I sort of think it is coming back from the concussion. I think concussions screw around with timing-not sure if it is the time off or the brain damage, but Bergeron and Savard both seemed to take a while to catch up (although not sure Savard really came back before going out for good).
Sorry I wasn’t around to weed out the trolls yesterday, guys. :(
I’ve watched the hit in slow-mo on days of yorr and honestly it looks like marchand’s back definitely hits salo in the back of the thigh….can’t wait to see how this hearing goes.
