Boston Bruins Midweek Prospect Report
Happy February...it's finally time for another edition of the Cup of Chowder Midweek Prospect Report! After the jump, check out who's hot, who's not, who's promoted and demoted, and who's carrying on the tradition of Bruins prospects scoring goals at Fenway Park...
P-BRUINS NOTABLES
- Craig Cunningham, formerly of the Vancouver Giants, is turning into a nice surprise for the struggling PBruins this year. Of the 20 GWGs scored this season, four belong to Cunningham.
- Nathan McIver has finally recovered from a broken fibula suffered in the first game of the season. In his ten games back since returning, the P-Bruins have gone 6-2-1-1.
- Stefan Chaput has been out since December after having surgery on an undisclosed injury. Chaput posted on his twitter that he is "in for a long recovery." It's likely that he is done for the season.
- The only player on the P-Bruins' current roster with a plus rating is Notre Dame product Calle Ridderwall. Ridderwall has played in 38 games, has only amassed 8 PIMs, and plays a huge amount of shorthanded time. He may not make a huge mark on the scoresheet, but his defensive skill is noteworthy - with time, it's very possible he could develop into a Gregory Campbell type.
- Maxime Sauve still has not returned after suffering a severe concussion several weeks ago. There is no current timetable for his return.
- Anton Khudobin's GAA dropped over the course of two months, but his save% has gone up slightly - indicative of improved shot-blocking, as fewer shots are getting through to the net.
- Adam Courchaine, the forgotten goalie prospect playing for the ECHL's Alaska Aces (and his former P-Bruins coach, Rob Murray) has become the team's starter, as his partner, ECHL goalie of the year Gerald Coleman, is up on an AHL tryout. Courchaine is currently in the midst of an 11-games-in-20-days roadtrip, where he will have to start every game - the Aces have no backup goaltender to speak of. KHL NOTABLES
- Defenseman Maxim Chudinov has 31 points in 43 games, and recently also played in the KHL All-Star Game in Riga, Latvia. He was voted in as Fan's Choice (fans select three forwards, two D, and a goalie for each team) for Team Ozolins. His team lost 15-11 to Team Fedorov.
- Defenseman Yuri Alexandrov, formerly playing for SKA St. Petersburg, now plays for Avangard Omsk. Looking into whether this was a trade or what....will have an update by the next report.
OHL NOTABLES
- Dougie Hamilton of the Niagara Ice Dogs has five points in four games in the month of January, but is currently serving a 10-game suspension for a high hit to the head.
- Ryan Spooner has a point-per-game for Sarnia since being traded from Kingston 11 games ago.
- Jared Knight was sidelined with a neck injury, but not a concussion, as he was quick to point out. He was given time off to recover and is now back in the lineup for the CHL's top-ranked London Knights.
- Alexander Khokhlachev has 54 points in 43 games as an 18 year old for Windsor. Can has Koko in the NHL soon?
COLLEGE NOTABLES
- Brian Ferlin is having a very decent rookie campaign, with 18 points in 21 games for Cornell.
- Justin Florek of Northern Michigan University has 22 points in 26 games, with eight of his 14 goals coming on the powerplay. The senior will likely join Providence when his season ends in March or April. His team is currently ranked 19th by USCHO.com, with a 12-9-5 record.
- Rob O'Gara, a Bruins prospect out of Milton Academy, joined the prestigious ranks of players who have scored a goal at Fenway Park last month. Although Nobles & Greenough eventually beat Milton Academy 7-2, it must be a pretty great experience. Watch video of O'Gara's postgame interview here.
- Goaltender Lars Volden has been demoted from the SM-Liiga's Espoo Blues to Jokipojat, a team in the second-highest league in Finland known as Mestis. His numbers will be updated in the table to reflect this change as soon as Jokipojat's website is updated. (relatedly, Volden in finnish translates to "violence" and this is awesome.)

Really intrigued by the season Chudinov has had at his age. Wonder how difficult it’s going to be to get him to play over here.
Also wonder how Bruins fans will take to a small-ish, European, puck moving type defenseman.

I think from what I’ve read about Chudinov , he’s actually a willing participant in the physical aspect of the game (at the same time, so is Kampfer).

THAT COWARD DOESN’T HIT TRADE HIM
I really don’t think that was the only reason for B’s fans’ disdain for Kaberle.
Kick his ass, Seabass!
So why did they hate him?

you rang?
because he was a past-his-prime one-trick-pony brought in to fix the wrong problem with the PP, failed miserably at it (not entirely his fault), and made egregious defensive mistakes in the process?
I like puckmoving defensemen. What I don’t like are defensemen that are afraid of the corners and break out in hives when faced with tough play in front of the net.
I think we’d prefer all defensemen be proficient in all aspects of the game. I thought Kaberle caught a ton of senseless flack for the same things you said you don’t like about defensemen. But I barely noticed any of that stuff, because I was busier noticing that the Bruins weren’t hemmed into their own zone for hours on end like they did for large periods of the Carolina and Philly series, where they carried a lot of defensemen willing to go into the corners and face tough play in front of the net, but couldn’t clear their own zone properly.
I did enjoy reading on HF today that Kampfer is apparently a “giveaway machine”. He has 4 on the season.

Personally I think being able to dig in the corners is a necessary part of playing as a defenseman. I don’t expect all defensemen to play a hard physical game, but I do expect them to be able to mix it up a bit, even if their primary role is to move the puck effectively.
You’ve got 2 defensemen. If one can go into the corners and get it to the guy who can actually move the puck up, awesome.

Why can’t the guy that can move the puck also go into the corners, rather than having to pass it around in your own zone? I just don’t get it. With Kaberle it seemed like a mental block more than anything. He just refused to get even a little bit physical.
What I’m saying is that if you only have guys that go into the corners in your own zone, you’re going to have a lot of situations with the puck in the corners in your own zone. A puck-mover, even if he isn’t the most physical guy, is useful. It’s about having more than one skillset in your box of tricks.

Obviously the ideal is to have guys that can do everything but that’s just not going to happen with the cap. So with multiple one-dimensional defensemen, some of them will ideally be good at different things. Being a good 1920s defenseman isn’t all of it.

Providence sucks so hard and yet our OHL prospecs are so awesome. Of course, the Bruins are so awesome right now, so…

Where did you get the +/- info for the OHL guys? Is Knight’s +26 really gaudy for that league? I have no clue.

true.
Very much a reflection of how good the Knights are. On crappy teams, Spooner is a -3. look at the goals against for sarnia and kingston, compared to london:

more info on Volden if anyone is curious
asked Tomppaaax on twitter about him going to the 2nd league, he said: “Blues loaned the #1 G of Jokipojat in exchange for Volden and have their other goalie returning soon.”
Volden has played 3 games for Jokipojat and has allowed 5 goals on 84 shots.

KHOKHLACHEV, Alexander C/L 5'10" 172 09/09/93 Windsor (OHL) 43 20 34 54 -13 24 7 0 2
As good as those numbers look for Khokhlachev, is anyone a little concerned about the +/- -13?
On a team with a -33 goal differential? Eh… plus/minus is very team-based, so players on a good team will have a gaudy one and players on a bad team will have a bad one.
We didn’t draft him for his defense.

True, very true we did not draft him for his defense...
and sometimes you have the misfortune of stepping on the ice when a goal goes in and you end up with a minus when you have nothing to do with it. Thanks for the info on the team’s -33 goal differential, I did not know that. :)

It’s not even that they’re real bad, it’s mostly that London, Kitchener and Plymouth are absolutely curb-stomping everyone else in their conference, and then fourth-eighth are pretty tight. (although Sarnia adding Spooner is going to make them very hard to catch in fourth). Windsor’s only three points out of fifth place, even though they’re sitting in eighth right now.
Oh the OHL.

Carter Camper seems to be having a decent season as well....
I wonder if he might see him up with the Bruins soon maybe to take over for Zach Hamill?
I understand Zach Hamill was a 1st round pick, and he has played okay for the Bruins, but we are not getting much production out of him…
This. Camper’s great, I’m a fan, but this is only his first season out of college. I think next season, if the Bruins decide they’re done with Hamill, Camper might see NHL time. He’s been a nice surprise for an undersized, undrafted guy.

Thanks Phunwin....
That is what I feel as well, that the Bruins are going to give Hamill loads of chances to prove himself, but I wonder what the impact might be on other guys, like Camper and Caron (but that is also on Caron if he can not show them that he is better and deserves more of a shot than Hamill)… Thanks. :)
Love me some Spooner, but is anyone else a little concerned that he’s been traded twice in about 14 months?
I know that this time, Kingston traded him for a loooooooooad of picks because they are awful. They also wanted to give him a chance to compete for a playoff spot in likely his last year in the OHL.
I’m not concerned at all honestly. Kid has good character and I think this trade really just was a case of trying to get him into a situation where he’s not far and away the best guy on the team.

Nah both trades were basement teams trading away their good players.
He was traded from the Petes to the Frontenacs for a playoff push last year and then again from Kingston to Sarnia this year for the same thing. He did ask for the trade from the Petes but that team was a hot mess that year so I dont blame him. There was at least one other kid who wanted out of Peterborough that season so dont read too much into it.
Its not uncommon in the OHL at all for the great players to get moved around their last few years to the contending teams.
They did it for Savy, they did it for Horton, they did it for each other, they did it for us. I give you the 2011 Stanley Cup Champions....The Boston Bruins!!
My Lions lost to the Saints who are clearly the better team. (This is what happens when you back your team and they lose),
(relatedly, Volden in finnish translates to “violence” and this is awesome.)
This is awesome, except that he’s Norwegian. Maybe they demoted him in Finland just so they don’t look like they’re promoting violence.
Kick his ass, Seabass!
Volden is also Norwegian for violence.
