Hitting The Links: Loud Noises Edition

Did anyone watch the Grammys last night? Me neither. Too much hockey on to actually devote time to crappy, crapp music being lauded by Hollywood idiots. There are a lot of teams out west making a lot of noise, specifically in the Central Division. Not that I don't enjoy the Bruins curb-stomping everyone else in theNortheast, but it's so fun to watch this dogfight for the division. Can't wait to see which teams make moves and which don't...the trade deadline is fast approaching.

After the jump, looking at the Bruins' true value, another player returns from a concussion, and a Carl Soderberg update....whaaa?

Hey all

Seeing that the B’s had won on Saturday was a big pick-me-up…I had a great time in HFD at Monster Jam, but on the way home had a car spin into my lane with no time for me to react, and I ended up in a 65+MPH crash. I’m sore but OK otherwise, but Sat. night/Sun. morning was a bit difficult, so watching the re-air yesterday helped me out a lot.

Simplest explanation is that Kampfer was sent to PVD on Saturday, and Bodnarchuk is going to be the 7th D for the road trip.

More fun explanation: OMG! Corvo and/or Boychuk are gone!

by Black Bird on Feb 13, 2012 11:17 AM EST up reply actions

Krejci + Boychuk
for
Whitney + Yandle

And if that sounds like a HFBoards trade, it’s because that’s where I saw it.

by Black Bird on Feb 13, 2012 11:18 AM EST up reply actions

It’s totally a HFBoards type trade. In terms of value around the league:

Yandle > Krejci
Whitney > Boychuck

The + the Bruins would have to sacrifice would be pretty significant.

This trade deadline is likely going to be a real dud. I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing for the Bruins though, I still look at them as the best team in the NHL, if no one improves at the deadline due to the asking prices, they’ll keep their big 4 prospects and their first rounder, and maintain that edge over the other teams.

And if you’re a person who is interested in getting a Parise or Suter Bruins jersey, the absolute best thing is them remaining with their current team, because that eliminates a GM overpaying them based on the haul they had to give up at the deadline this year.

by Michael Taylor on Feb 13, 2012 11:29 AM EST up reply actions

Alright, this might sound like a broken record but

There HAS to be someone out there that is better than Joe Corvo and cheap!

by pemci on Feb 13, 2012 11:31 AM EST up reply actions

Probably not I’m afraid. Look at the prices defensemen with any kind of offensive upside got during offseason, then multiply that by however you can quantify increased demand and reduced supply. I think we’re going to have to live with him.

Best I’m hoping for is a reasonably solid stay-at-home D for injury depth. 3rd line winger is a bonus

I'm out, peace - Tim Thomas

by TomServo42 on Feb 13, 2012 11:36 AM EST up reply actions

Look at last year...

we got Rich Peverly and Chris Kelly….two names that many did not recognize or even thought they would be help much. People thought that Kaberle was going to be the big piece, but it really was Pevs and Kelly that came up huge and not Kabs…

by pemci on Feb 13, 2012 11:37 AM EST up reply actions

true.. but..

We also gave up 2 roster players to get them in Wheeler and Stuart. Chia has said over and over that he does not want to part with anyone on this roster. Probably just a negotiating tactic, but really… you have to give something to get something.

by Federko on Feb 13, 2012 11:39 AM EST up reply actions

I really doubt it. A player better than Joe Corvo at this year’s deadline will likely cost a significant prospect or player. Seeing as though we don’t have a 2nd, any player we give up that will cost a 3rd or less is probably going to “feel” better than Corvo…but eventually will get kicked around by fans like Corvo does.

Part of the reason I rarely slum it at HF anymore is having to read things like “Kampfer has been absolutely brutal this season”. I realize that +/- is a very limited way of looking at things, but I think it’s fair to say that a defensemen who hasn’t been a minus player in a single game this season is probably somewhat better than disastrous.

My gripe with Corvo is

He doesn’t score and he doesn’t hit. We got him for being an offensive defenseman, but he has 3 goals which is just one more than McQuaid, but the same as Boychuk and Seidenberg, he even has less goals that Ference.

He does not hit, even fragile Ference has twice as many hits as Corvo and he does not block shots. All he does is shoot the puck, but again, comes back to the 3 goals, nothing really amazing there…

by pemci on Feb 13, 2012 11:59 AM EST up reply actions

“hits” are a really really bad stat, and they change depending on whether you’re home or away and which away barn you’re in. People have tried to make them useful but they’re just not.

I think the best litmus test of this with Bruins fans is to ask them what they thought of Mark Stuart and Dennis Wideman. One player is basically revered to this day, the other constantly derided, and it’s inversely correlated with their on-ice value.

I dont care about their contract hit if that the cheap you are looking for as there is tonnes of room to add salary as long as its expiring at seasons end.

I agree with Michael in that this trade deadline unless some teams really hit the skids for the next 2 weeks there are too many teams in the chase to be sellers.

"*I still look at them as the best team in the NHL"
  • if healthy. This team is really missing Horton and if he is out long term it will hurt their chances in the playoffs. Me hopes that Chia adds the depth this team will need to replace a Horton type player, otherwise they are doomed.

by Federko on Feb 13, 2012 11:35 AM EST up reply actions

doomed is pushing it. This team scores by committee and has some slumping forwards at the moment. I for one don’t view Horton as the lynch pin of the offense.

I'm out, peace - Tim Thomas

by TomServo42 on Feb 13, 2012 11:40 AM EST up reply actions

ok..

So doomed might be a little harsh.. but look at the big goals he scored last year, and also look at the shell Krejci has become since he went down. This teams chemistry has been disrupted without him.

by Federko on Feb 13, 2012 11:43 AM EST up reply actions

true: our ability to score in overtime in the playoffs may be hampered without him

I think krejci’s performances is independent of Horton’s injury. Coincidental slump. Its not as if he’s found his groove since being shuffled. Horton’s injury to me mainly affects the 3rd line’s ability to produce due to moving Pevs IMO

I'm out, peace - Tim Thomas

by TomServo42 on Feb 13, 2012 11:47 AM EST up reply actions

Just to add another point

Krejci had 13 goals last year during the whole season, and then turned it on in the playoffs (especially against Philly and Tampa) and he finished with 12 goals…Krejci just seems to take it to another level come the playoffs…

by pemci on Feb 13, 2012 11:53 AM EST up reply actions

I would agree...

Horton has not been the player he was last year. Arguable having two concussions in a short span of time will affect his production. But, even last year, he was not the lynch pin to the offense. I am taking nothing away from his 2 game 7 winners! Those were AWESOME!!!

by pemci on Feb 13, 2012 11:44 AM EST up reply actions

agreed. Market conditions forcing Chia’s hand to stand pat wouldn’t be a bad thing. He’ll do his usual stock-up on college D, maybe get a minor depth addition and call it a day

And that’s part of the reason I think they’re unlikely to make a significant trade. Their assets fall into 3 categories (if you believe PC at face value that he isn’t trading roster players)

1. Untouchable stud prospect – Dougie Hamilton
2. Forward prospects/draft picks who you’d deal for an impact player, but won’t return an impact player. – Knight, Spooner, Koko, 2012 1st.
3. Sell Low asset – Jordan Caron

I mean if you think that Caron, Kampfer, 2012 1st brings you back something good, than maybe, but to be honest, I have a hard time believing that player is going to be unquestionably better than anyone in their top 9 or top 4.

I’ve kinda kept an eye on Soderberg since the Toivonen trade…seemed like he was content to stay in Sweden, but he might have made the right choice given the B’s depth at center. The timing of the article is curious, though. Perhaps it’s pre-trade-deadline buzz to get attention?
