According to Bob McKenzie, we're about to see three more years of Manchuk, at an average of 3.36M per year.

Thoughts?

See ya Corvo. lol I’m not really sure Manchuk is worth $3.3M a year….ouch. Must be all out of traffic cones in Boston.

just when we thought Chia was done overpaying. Think Phunwin’s worried about Kelly now?

It would have liked to spend that money more on Kelly

than Boychuk…although Boychuk is 3 years younger than Kelly…

by pemci on Feb 14, 2012 2:45 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, I think he is worried. He’s so unhappy with this move that he’s referring to himself in the third person, even.

by Phunwin on Feb 14, 2012 7:31 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I guess I must be in the minority here,

but sounds like a good deal to lock up Boychuk, at least for the next tghree years. $3.3 seems a little much, but his play has not infuriated as much as Corvo’s.

Considering Chara can make a traffic cone look like an all-star next to him, and that Boychuk does not look like an all-star… bad deal

upside!

@MikeMiccoli

Missing from the Boychuk announcement, aside from an official release from the B’s, no NTC & no NMC. JB55 can be moved if under-performing.

eh

Joe Haggerty @HackswithHaggs
Wrong. He’s their No. 3 defenseman RT @cap_this: Haggs, you’re insane. Absurdly overpaid. (Johnny Boychuk) is Bs 5th best defenseman bq.

I agree with Haggerty

Haggs

is a tool. No way is Boychuck worth this much. Maybe it’s a trade signing (whatever the hell that is)??

by Federko on Feb 14, 2012 3:32 PM EST up reply actions

I’d rather make Mcquaid or Ference a top pairing defenseman before signing boychuck to that much. I’m not a fan of this signing. Way more important signings to worry about and need the money for(looking at you Rask). Bring in Hamilton next year and put him with Chara. Then we wouldnt need manchuck for that much money

by bpen011 on Feb 14, 2012 3:18 PM EST reply actions

This pretty much makes using Savvy’s LTIR mandatory next year. Unless Thomas moves…

4 forward spots – all bottom six – a Tuukka and a Dougie to fit with 9m in projected cap space w/o Savvy on LTIR.

I remember 2 years ago when the PPP guys were laughing about how the Bruins were going to get torn apart by the cap if they didn’t win in 08-09

I trust Chiarelli, even if that gets tested sometimes.

In fairness

are they entirely wrong? Here’s all the guys that had been moved or were out for other reasons between the 09 playoffs and the 11 playoffs:
PJ
bitz
fernandez
hunwick
kessel
kobasew
nokelainen
savard
sobotka
stuart
wheeler
sturm
ward
wideman
yelle
montador
lashoff

granted, the cap didn’t motivate all that – mostly just Sturm, Wheeler, Wideman and Stuart, but still pretty significant change-over.

Or a how a bout a GIF of a dumb turnover at the blueline or neutral zone like the one that gave Perreault the Capitals third goal a few weeks back, right after Seguin had tied it at two. Or any of the times he has pinched recklessly and got beaten back.

he might be worth it if he didn't make so many bone-headed decisions in the offensive zone

i’ve seen it becoming more and more of a problem as this guy’s career has gone on. he plays like he has Gonchar’s shot (but clearly doesn’t)
