Sunday Afternoon Open Thread
No suspension for Kyle Turris after his hit on Joe Corvo. Discuss.
Also, we'll have a Trade Deadline Day Open Thread tomorrow in lieu of our regular posts. Because hey, who doesn't like crazy speculation and freaking out about trade rumors?

Wrong of me to believe that Shanahan took that into account? Shawn Thornton’s raging fists = worse than missing three games.

It is pathetic that if a Bruin commits a questionable hit, he is looking at a suspension
If someone commits a an illegal hit on a Bruin, it was not even get a phone call from Shanahasnoballs
Random thought here. Zenon Konopka has been a healthy scratch the last seven games. I doubt there is a spot for him on the team, but wouldn’t mind seeing him in a Bruins sweater. He wouldn’t cost much either.

Rick Nash speculation
It’s looking more like Nash won’t be dealt this season, but it seems like Boston might be in a good position to get him in July (assuming Boston is one of his agreed-to destinations, as has been the rumor).
Consider that Columbus’ GM said he’s looking for an established goaltender, not a high-potential prospect like Bernier. I have a feeling that Thomas is going to be traded (his no-trade expires on July 1), so why not package him with another roster player and a prospect for Nash?
Due to the fact that next year will be the last on Thomas’ contract, and considering his age, we’d have to sweeten the pot with another roster player, and I’m thinking Krejci might be the guy. Nobody else has the right combination of years on his deal, tradeability, and talent (unless you’re really high on McQuaid).
Is that, plus a non-Dougie prospect enough to get it done? Is it too much? Should the Bruins even want Nash?
Howson’s not the brightest bulb, but I doubt we can con him into taking a soon-to-retire netminder, no matter how good. He has to rebuild the BJs, so to take on and waste Thomas’ final year on a team without a ghost of a chance of contention, we’d have to add a very significant roster player – Lucic or Krjeci probably – along with an A prospect. Not remotely worth it IMO.
My guess, Thomas will only be dealt to a contending team looking for a fix in the position to get over the hump (Chicago? San Jose?)
I stand with Tuukka Rask in his fight for the starting job
and I should note that the only real A prospect we have right now is Dougie. No one’s going to bang down our door for Knight or the Spoonman
I stand with Tuukka Rask in his fight for the starting job
if by “just like” he means “is also a hockey player” then yeah, totally

We really shouldn’t even try for him unless Columbus puts an ad in the paper saying ‘free to good home’. The supposed asking price is a current roster player, a prospect, and a draft pick. The only exciting prospect we have is Hamilton – who isn’t untouchable but promises to be more than trade bait if the B’s can wait. I doubt any other prospect would even tilt the scale.
That’s an insane price to begin with and frankly Nash’s contract would be a lead anchor in Boston. The guy’s good but c’mon, 7.8 million for a half-dozen years? That’s pretty unworkable if we want to keep the old band going – which seems like a halfway decent idea given last years achievements.
I really wish the media would just drop Boston from the list of interested parties when it comes to Nash.
Fun with the Nash contract from PPP the other day
Okay…
So Gomez had 578 pts in 706 games before the trade = 0.82 ppg and Rick Nash has 530 pts in 653 games before a trade = 0.81 ppg. Why is Nash’s contract so much better and not a risk to turn into a Gomez exactly?
by scott tubbesing on Feb 25, 2012 4:25 PM EST up reply actions
Not that I agree with this as I highly doubt he’s going to drop off like Gomez since they’re not remotely the same type of player, but just remember the dangers when considering lengthy 7million+ contracts…

LeBrun's column
The Boston Bruins are still hoping to add both a forward and a defenseman. A source told ESPN.com Sunday that B’s have interest in Daniel Winnik, T.J. Galiardi and David Jones — all three Colorado Avalanche forwards are very much in play. Winnik and Jones are UFAs July 1 while Galiardi is an RFA July 1. The Bruins have interest in possibly dealing for one of them.
I know absolutely nothing about those guys.
David Jones would be alright. Decent size and shot. Scoring ability upgrade on Pouliot. The other guys make me shrug.

What the what is that, Shanny?
I think what Chara did was purely in the heat of the moment. Which almost cost us. I agree with whoever said that Boston doesn’t need to prove itself it doesn’t take any crap, as it also had a 3 goal lead it could rub in their faces.
I hope Shawn Thornton is feeling better for Tuesday, Even if he isn’t, maybe he could play one shift just to puke on Turris’ skates as he flies by. There’s no rule against that.

Chiarelli said, "I’ve been clear in telling people I’ve talked to that I don’t want to move anyone off our roster."
If that is true I don’t see the B’s landing any big fish, or even big-ish fish. I’m not sure if I believe Chiarelli though, this team needs help at RW and D and I’m not sure you can improve those positions by trading picks/prospects.

Well, Pevs will be back in a few weeks, so we might be alright, or able to get by by getting a 3rd line wing, because Pevs can undoubtedly play with Krejci and Looch.

Keep Calm and Tim Tom
Chia has said he expects him back, but I strongly suspect he is done for the season.
Pevs should be back though-and hopefully quickly finds his timing again.
I agree with you in regards to Horton. Why would you even risk it? If Chia isn’t willing to tear apart the current roster or is reluctant to give up prospects to protect the future, (all points I agree with as a fan) then Horton should sit for the rest of the year imo. Now if he does return to play I certainly won’t complain, but if he comes back and gets dinged again, well, there is to much to speculate on for that. Play it safe. Put 18 on the shelf until next season.

I’m not too confident that he will be back as soon as predicted. Knees have a funny way to taking their sweet time to heal.
Vis a vis trades, the B’s do not need to make a blockbuster. But they need something more substantial than 4th line depth.

Got to be honest
The comments about wheel of justice and all of a sudden Shanahan not knowing what he’s talking about are getting friggin’ annoying.
Lucic leaves his skates three years ago and puts Van Ryn though the glass and it’s a highlight reel for years.
I get it. Jack got his panties in a bunch last night and now everyone needs to be mad.
Nah. We don’t have the right to say that we feel Turris’ hit was clearly illegal? I don’t think there was much, if any, dispute that Neil’s hit was totally legit.

“YAY FOR BRENDAN SHANAHAN’S PERSONAL VENDETTA AGAINST THE BRUINS!”
Not your quote, but there’s enough of them. So does Campbell making sure his son’s team always win now get countered by an apparent vendetta on the part of Shanahan?
It’s old, it’s years old at this point.
hi, yeah, have you watched any hockey this season??
a hit gets made and the player gets shanabanned.
then same hit gets made by another player and shanny doesn’t even bat an eyelash.
and it seems to constantly happen to US.

hi, yeah, have you watched any hockey this season??
Yes, I’ve watched years of hockey.
And been active on this board for years now. Welcome though.
Or does this go back to the argument that the Nose Face Killer shouldn’t have been punished for Salo?
I think at the moment, we’re focused on what just happened: Turris lays a bad hit on Corvo, and nothing happens. As I said above, it’s disappointing to me that nothing was done about this hit, or Sestito’s hit on Horton, but at the same time, nothing happened to Chara after the Patches fiasco, and Lucic got nothing for plowing Miller. Do I feel like maybe after all the talk of a “Bruins bias”, that maybe the league is trying to dispel the idea that they let the black and gold do what they want? Doubtful, but it’s not totally impossible I guess. Regardless of how other people feel, I do think Turris should’ve gotten a couple games, or a fine at the very least, but we’ve gotten lucky before, so I can’t really be absolutely livid that someone else escaped punishment, but I’m not going to pretend that I’m happy about it, either.

i will admit
we as a team do seem to sometimes have a horseshoe shoved way up where the sun don’t shine.
chara on patches WAS bad but i feel nothing for ryan miller. way i saw it, it was his own damn fault for coming so far out. you wanna come out of the paint and play like a skater? okay, then you’re gonna be treated like a skater. and that means if you don’t want lucic to kick yo ass and check you thru the glass, then you better move yo ass outta his way.
and jesus christ ryan miller, you fucked the USA so royally at the Olympics…

Miller’s the reason we got to the Gold Medal game, my God man.
Personality aside, to bash Miller’s performance two years later because he and Looch got into a fight is homerism to the nth degree.
And last I checked, it’s actually Crosby who fucked the USA.

Bergeron for Selke.

don’t believe there’s any conspiracy myself, it’s just inconsistency toward all teams and all incidents. There’s not enough structure to the SD system, need to be uniform, automatic suspension lengths, but the PA would never buy in.
The only argument I could maybe see about bias is that the Miller incident was the first embarrassment of Shanny’s new gig, but I have to believe he’s professional enough to not let that cloud judgement. who knows
I stand with Tuukka Rask in his fight for the starting job
Thanks, Tom
I’ll fully agree with incosistency. We’ve taken blows, and we’ve been given gifts. Some concrete rule is still needed.
The majority of posters here are just frustrated at the
inconsistency of what is a suspendable hit and was is not a suspendable hit. This was the cry against Campbell, and Shanahan came in and he was going to be clear, rulings were going to be more uniform, things would finally make more sense. However, we see the old “Wheel of Justice” being utilized once more and with more frequency. I feel that the inconsistency has also affected how the team is playing, they don’t know what might be reviewable for a suspension and what might not be, so they get hesitant in making physical contact.
by pemci on Feb 27, 2012 9:47 AM EST up reply actions 1 recs
Agreed!
I am in full agreement with you. I would love consistency. To know that if you do something illegal you get suspended, but if it happens to you, then the other party gets suspended. Consistency, consistency, consistency… would love it. :)

All fans are hypocritical to some extent, no one denies this. People talk about Eddie Shore being a great Bruin. I bet he was also a total POS. However, the past is the past. I bet some fans here liked McSorely, should they not be allowed to be angry with Matt Cooke?
The NHL has taken considerable strides this year to improve and standardize discipline. It annoys people(self included) that even with the improvements, there still seems to be no rhyme or reason for some of Shannahan’s verdicts.
