The Boston Bruins got their trademark strong third period Tuesday night, but it wasn't enough as Robin Lehner kept the door shut and Ottawa skated away with a 1-0 lead in front of 17,565 at TD Garden.
Nick Foligno scored the game's only goal, a power play strike at 14:44 of the first period, and the lead held for the final 43 minutes of the game, despite Ottawa giving Boston three separate chance on the power play in the third period.
Boston, which accumulated just 15 shots in the first 40 minutes of action, had 17 shots in the third period, but couldn't beat Lehner, who shut the Bruins out to give Ottawa their first win over Boston in 2011-12 and their first win over the Bruins in the two teams' last nine games.
Despite the pre-game hype and the return of Shawn Thornton to the Bruins lineup, the match saw not a single fight take place, and Kyle Turris - whose elbow to the head of Bruins defenseman Joe Corvo in Saturday night's 5-3 Boston win was deemed non-suspendable by NHL Vice President for Player Safety Brendan Shanahan - led Ottawa with six shots.
Tyler Seguin had four shots for Boston.
New additions Brian Rolston and Matt Mottau, who came over from the Islanders in a trade on Monday, didn't do much; Rolston was booked for tripping at 9:41 of the first period, and Mottau recorded just one shot one the evening.
Lehner made 32 saves to preserve the first shutout of his NHL career.
