Hitting The Links: Recovery Mode Again Edition
Ugh. Just....ugh.
There weren't really any bright spots in last night's game. Just an embarrassing blowout. Every team suffers a few every year (please remember: the Red Wings getting blown out 10-3 right before playoffs last year by the already-numerically eliminated Blues) so...whatever, on to the Predators on Saturday. But one has to wonder what moves will be made in the coming week. A big roadie is coming up soon, and it's been proven that making moves before a huge trip works pretty darn well.
Question is, who goes, who stays, and who arrives?
After the jump, the NHL makes a ~humongous big secret~ announcement today, and more...
Bruins News:
- Patrice Bergeron does it all, according to Claude Julien. [Globe]
- Lindy Ruff was in the press box for last night's game, and he got to provide slightly different analysis than usual. [Tonawanda News]
- Notebook from yesterday, including a bit about the Bruins' odd stretching routine. [Globe]
- What was with that non-goal yesterday? [Herald]
NHL News:
- The NHL is making a ~huge announcement in Detroit and at Ann Arbor today~! I wonder what it could be. [NHL]
- Ken Hitchcock is learning to adapt his coaching style to the way the game is played now. He's doing a pretty damn good job of it. [Globe and Mail]
- Miikka Kiprusoff became the first Finn to hit 300 wins last night. [PHT]
- Ilya Bryzgalov strikes again. This time, he talks about the shootout. [CSN Philly]
- Will Philly reunite the Schenn brothers? Will that be this year's "Kessel to Toronto 2009"? [Sun]

That was definitely a goal and it was a hilariously bad call.

Not only a disallowed goal,
but then not to call 3rd man in, hate to say it, but it looks like some refs have it out for us…
This is a different kind of call from Rob Martell. (link goes to video)

Scott Thornton left the bench to start an altercation but they won’t do anything about that either.
OPERATION TANK IS A GO. It’s the only explanation for Mike Weber. He’s on a secret mission.
If you’ll check the video review, he only beats the shit out of Weber after Weber knocks over Pouliot:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omfrC6wWTV4 (start like 40 seconds in)
Which happens after Thornton gets on the ice.

I know how they enforce this rule because they tagged Andrew Peters (sucks) with it once. The only two things that matter is whether or not it is a legal line change and how long between leaving the bench and starting a fight.
It was a one-game suspension back then for legally leaving the bench to start a fight, Though the last time someone left the bench on a legal line change to start a fight they only got fined, and it was STEVE DOWNIE.
OPERATION TANK IS A GO. It’s the only explanation for Mike Weber. He’s on a secret mission.
You can clearly see someone (Caron?) entering the bench on the right of the video as Shawn steps over the boards.
There would have been no fight had Weber not decided to knock down Pouliot for no reason.

Haha… the line where i wrote exactly that apparently didn’t make it over from Word.
It’s not an automatic 10-game suspension because Caron was smart enough not to get into the fight (though it looked like he thought about it and some smart Bruin might have told him to get off the ice,) but they still have hearings for people who get instigators immediately after leaving the bench
OPERATION TANK IS A GO. It’s the only explanation for Mike Weber. He’s on a secret mission.
Caron was smart enough not to get into the fight? Huh? He was already off the ice by the time Thornton got to Weber. Were he still on the ice you would still see his legs as the camera pans over.
If Weber didn’t want to get his ass kicked he shouldn’t have made unnecessary contact with Pouliot. It’s that simple. Had he not initiated that contact, Thornton would have stepped out and skated a typical shift.

Yeah, the smart part was not fighting Weber before Thornton got there, which he clearly thought about.
OPERATION TANK IS A GO. It’s the only explanation for Mike Weber. He’s on a secret mission.
Why would he fight Weber for no reason?? The contact that sparked the fight came with Caron on the bench…

Isn’t that Caron’s leg at :50 in the video? I checked my recording too but i couldn’t read his number… kind of the right size though.
OPERATION TANK IS A GO. It’s the only explanation for Mike Weber. He’s on a secret mission.
At :50 of the video Corny posted, there is a skate at the top of the screen but I haven’t a clue whose it is.
At :43 you can see Caron skate up the bench as Thornton is preparing to step over the boards.
At :45 is the Weber contact. Immediately after this, they pan right a bit and there is no one visible on the ice by the boards (where Caron was a few seconds prior) which implies that he is now on the bench.
Then at :50 you see someone skate towards and curl away but all is seen is their feet.

Two Bruins were going off the ice, but one turned around, i think its Caron but it could be the other one just as easily.
Also, i disagree on that instigator… i (begrudgingly) understand when they give them out after someone drops the gloves in response to a legal play, but Weber was penalized for that hit on Pouliot so there should be no instigator.
OPERATION TANK IS A GO. It’s the only explanation for Mike Weber. He’s on a secret mission.
Agreed on the instigator.
It’s not a terrible rule in and of itself… it’s just never applied properly. This is a prime instance where it should not be used but every time I feel it should be called it is not. Thus it has become a pointless rule (kinda like how the 3rd man in rule is never called correctly)
Our intention isn't to discuss this... it's to see if you can bleed.

Yes, that’s what i want, i want Shanahan to write something explaining why Shawn Thornton shouldn’t be suspended when similar situations had been.
OPERATION TANK IS A GO. It’s the only explanation for Mike Weber. He’s on a secret mission.
Seeing as those situations came before Shanahan took office, there is no true precedent for the suspension.
The rule states you can’t leave the bench for the purpose of starting an altercation. He was not doing this, as it was clearly a line change (where do you think Pouliot was going?). However, Weber instigated the matter.
As I have said, it all was started by Weber and as such Thornton shoulders no blame and does not fall under that rule.
Our intention isn't to discuss this... it's to see if you can bleed.
by BobbyOrrsBastard on Feb 9, 2012 7:15 PM EST up reply actions
That’s why i think thornton has to be suspended or the instigator should be rescinded, which means shanahan has to say something either way. Otherwise Thornton officially “Started it” and when other people complain about it i have no way to explain it to them. :)
OPERATION TANK IS A GO. It’s the only explanation for Mike Weber. He’s on a secret mission.
Or neither has to happen and the league goes on their merry little way.
Instigator is not an automatic suspension. It only elevates to that level on your third instigator of the season (this is his first I believe). There is simply no justification for suspending him.

Oh my, don't tell me you are one of those
“the Bruins never get punished/suspended because Gregory Campbell is on the team, or Jeremy Jacobs owns Gary Bettman, or Brendan Shanahan has a crush on the Bruins, are you???
Because, SHAWN Thornton came on the ice, just as Weber knocks Pouliot Down, and just as Jordan Caron is LEAVING the ice, thus a line change, and Thornton got 2 minutes for instigating (how can you instigate, when the other guy started it?), 5 minutes for fighting and a 10 minute misconduct…You still want him to be fined/suspended for coming to the aid of a teammate?
Nope, not one of those
(But i do wonder sometimes if Milan Lucic is suspension-proof)

Not when i wondered it (last year) now he finally seems to have run out of immunity talismans or whatever he was using to get out of suspensions.

He was suspended a playoff game three seasons ago (when Boston faced Carolina). Undeservedly so in my opinion.

Yeah, that Carolina one was kind of iffy. my vague memory of games i watched three years ago that it was a reactionary suspension to some other similiar incident the previous day (one of the west series) that colie was too stupid to do anything about
OPERATION TANK IS A GO. It’s the only explanation for Mike Weber. He’s on a secret mission.
He was actually suspended for a first round game against Montreal. There had been some nastiness and Lapierre (master pest that he is) came charging at Lucic, Lucic puts hands up to defend himself and gets called for crosschecking to the head (even though glove made contact).

Yeah, that’s the one, the day before someone had crosschecked one of the unimportant red wings forwards in the back of the head and wasn’t suspended (I assume it was Pronger because he likes doing that)
Go colie cambell suspending people to make up for not suspending other people!
OPERATION TANK IS A GO. It’s the only explanation for Mike Weber. He’s on a secret mission.
And then not suspending players for sucker punching them in the face and breaking orbital bones…

Furthermore, I guess I wrote this in the wrong story...
In 3 of the last 4 Games, the Bruins have scored 1 goal or LESS! That in itself is not going to win you many games. To add insult to injury, and this is a real kick in the jewels, that 1 goal was scored by none other than Joe Corvo…
