This Week In Bruins History: PJ Axelsson Signs Last Contract For Bruins

It may not be one of those moments in history that everyone remembers or that it is even significant enough to be notable. However there is no doubt that Anders Per-Johan Axelsson was a cult hero for Boston Bruins fans. He didn't score a lot of goals, he wasn't a fighter but he gave it his all every time he was on the ice. On March 23, 2006, Axelsson signed a three year extension which would also be his last years as an NHL player. Just trying to show some love for PJ.

Axelsson played eleven seasons for the Bruins and coincidentally he wore the same number on his sweater. He had 103 goals and 184 assist during his career. PJ wasn't ever much of a threat to score goals, but he was one of the best penalty killers during his time in the league. He did however have a knack for finding the back of the net when ever the Bruins needed a big goal. 10 of his 103 career goals came short handed and 14 of them were game winners. His goals to game winning goals ratio beats current players like Sidney Crosby and Steven Stamkos. He obviously didn't have the skills that these two have, but none the less it is an impressive stat in itself.

Once Axelsson's contract with the Bruins was up, the team didn't resign him and he decided to return to Sweden to finish his career. Any die hard Bruins fan loves and respects what Axelsson brought to this team. He was one of those cult heroes such as PJ Stock or Byron Defoe that all fans had a soft spot for. He may have not done anything spectacular to earn himself a history lesson for us Chowder Head, but be was one of those players that Bruins players shouldn't ever forget.
