Basically all you need to know is that the Bruins could still, as of before tonight's game, be playing either the Maple Leafs, the Islanders, or the Senators in the playoffs, and the Senators could be playing either the Bruins, the Penguins, or the Canadiens. The only playoff matchup in the East that is actually set is Rangers-Capitals.
If the Bruins lose in any fashion, they drop to fourth place and play the Leafs. If the Bruins win in regulation, they play the Islanders. If they win in OT or a shootout, it's more Sens for everyone. Personally I'm tired of watching Bruins-Sens games this year. Let's do something else. A regulation win is greatly preferable, guys.
Yesterday's game was straight up disappointing. The Bruins came out of the gate a little wobbly but pulled it together for three mostly very good periods -- and let ticky-tack penalties get the best of them. All of Washington's goals came on the man advantage, on penalties to Bruins players that were pretty marginal. On the flip side, the Bruins had a lengthy man advantage themselves to end the game, and couldn't bury anything. Story of our lives.
The Senators' last game was a 2-1 loss to the Flyers last night. They've recently gotten back a miraculously-healed Erik Karlsson. Read their recap here; it's pretty great. This is a winnable game for the Bruins. Let's hope they can seize the opportunity.
