Matt Grzelcyk Out for the Rest of the Season

This just hasn't been Boston University's year.

The 7-11-2 Terriers currently sit 10th in Hockey East (out of 11) and the team hasn't won in its last six contests. To make matters worse, injuries have depleted the roster and they are down to 16 skaters for Friday's matchup with crosstown rival Boston College.

The latest injury is sophomore defenseman and Bruins prospect Matt Grzelcyk. For BU, it's a crushing blow in an already underwhelming season.

It goes without saying that this is a real shame for Grzelcyk. Besides the obvious disappointment of missing games, the injury has already robbed him of the opportunity to play at Fenway Park and he'll miss out on next month's Beanpot. For a local kid from Charlestown, few opportunities come as enticing as those.

Grzelcyk has struggled to build upon his outstanding freshman campaign in which he finished third in the league in defensive scoring en route to a spot on the Hockey East All-Rookie team. Like the rest of his Terrier teammates, Grzelcyk has struggled to put the puck in the net, though not for lack of trying; his 3.2 shots per game were tops for the Terriers.

The high point of Grzelcyk's shortened campaign was surely the World Junior Championship tournament. Though it ended on a sour note, particularly for Grzelcyk, he was a bright spot on an underachieving U.S. team.

It was assumed that he would build on that momentum in the second half of BU's season, and he did not disappoint. In the two contests post-WJC, Grzelcyk put up three points (1-2-3), all on the power play.

Including last week's game, Grzelcyk loses out on at least 17 games (depending on BU's playoff performance). A tough thing to stomach, but it's just more adversity for a guy who's proven capable of overcoming obstacles.

He'll be back next year and so will BU - they're loaded.
