What went wrong...

Last night, while trying to sleep I could shake the Bruins game 7 loss and the reasons why I though the we lost in the 2nd round of the playoffs. I know you might not all agree with these points but I believe they are what went wrong this year: Too Slow Although Iginla played well this year and Eriksson got concussed on several occasions, the trades/moves in the off season (and players getting older) made this team much slower. Sure Reilly Smith is a great skater, but we lost Seguin and Pevs, who were two of the fastest skaters on a slow team. The Habs were able to capitalize on the bruins slow skating and to me this was one of the main factors we lost the last 2 games of the series. Young D-Men (especially Miller and Bart) While the Bruins were able to rely on their young defensive core in the regular season, when it counted the most, they really let this team down. Our Defence was unable to effectively move the puck out of our zone, and it really cost us. Whether it was the pressure of playing in the playoffs (particularly in the Bell Center) or a lack of defensive talent on our back end, the defensive struggles really sunk us. Even though the Bruins played some of their best hockey immediately after the deadline, the Bruins really should have made a move for a battle tested defenceman (not Mezaros). Tuukka I really don't want to blame Rask for anything, as the has been the backbone of this team over the last 2 years, but we really could have used some Tim Thomas magic against the Habs. Sure Rask was solid, and his offence and d-men didn't really help him out that much, but he didn't make those huge saves when it was needed most. Price (and the his goal posts) on the otherhand did. Brad Marchand I know this has been a contentious issue all year on this site, but I think its time for Marchy to go. All the fancy advanced stats aside, Marchand's performance this year (and last) in the playoffs was disgraceful. The stupid penalties, the diving, the turnovers, the lack of finish were in my opinion a huge reason for this year's loss. I know he plays great on the PK with Bergy and I know getting under the skin of players sometimes works, but his overall play in these playoffs was terrible. When I think of all the past Bruins and the character they possessed, Marchand doesn't seem to belong on this team anymore (cue the argument) Team Attitude I love the Bruins and their style of play. I love that they are tough and will always stand up for their teammates. I love that they intimidate their opponents. I live their fight til the end attitude. But in these playoffs have to say there were times when I was embarrassed to be a B's fan. The actions of Lucic, Thornton, and Marchand were awful. I know they were extremely frustrated losing to the Habs, but you still have to play the game the right way. Last night for example during the post-series handshakes Lucic crossed the line. This tradition is something that sets hockey above all other sports in my mind. That teams fight so hard during a series against another team and then are gentlemanly enough to shake their opponents' hand for a good series is something that has always made me proud to be a hockey fan. After reading about Lucic threatening the Habs (and yes I hate the habs more than anything) I was definitely not a proud Bruins' fan. Anyways that's my rant. There were also some great moments from this season (the emergence of Soderberg and Smith, Bergy's great play and Olympic gold, etc)but right now I'm pissed and I just wanted to talk about the negatives. Thanks SCoC for the entertainment, and I'll see you next year.
